To consider sandals to do Rome in June?

I've been rattling my head about what to wear on my feet for a hot holiday in Europe in June/July.

We just don't get the kind of consistent weather where I am in the UK, and I'm pondering sandals, I love the look of anything and brown Leather, but will they be genuinely comfortable enough to tour the town?

Is there such a thing as a comfortable sandal, I'm not massively bothered about fashion!

Does anybody have any recommendations, much appreciated if so!

I did Sorrento , Pompeii etc last June wearing walking sandals from Mountain Warehouse. I walked miles and they were so comfortable.

Yes, but tourists don't need to conform to their standards. There will be lots of stereotypical Americans in sneakers etc.

Yes true, I didn't feel very chic in comparison though..I also went to Sicily and think I caused quite a disapproving story amongst the elders with my hotpants 😅

takealettermsjones · 30/04/2024 19:59

This is exactly what Skechers are for imo! And remember to put sun cream on the tops of your feet.

bellocchild · 30/04/2024 19:59

Find the brand and style that works for you - we've all got different feet. 🙂 For me, it's Teva Tirra. But Clarks and Marks are worth a try too.

RedSuedePump · 30/04/2024 20:00

i’ve had sore feet anywhere as much as i did in Rome! everywhere is cobbled so it really takes it toll - by the end of 4 days doing 20K+ steps a day my feet were destroyed! so you do need very comfortable and supportive footwear!

Mysticfalls · 30/04/2024 20:01

Rome is hot as hell in summer.
More covered (eg. Trousers, maxi skirt) is not a bad thing because it cuts down on the amount of skin you have to cover in sunscreen. But jeans are too hot. You need thin, light fabrics.

Exactly what I was going to say.

White Skechers and a loose cotton floaty dress is what I'd wear, OP.

Teva original are the best for sightseeing Imho

Id wear skirts, culottes and dresses

If you pop over to Stule and Beauthy and start a thread about packing for Rome you will get lots of help. I love packing thread. It would be to hard to follow on AIBU

How long are you there?

Leonarda89 · 30/04/2024 20:07

When I was in Rome I wore very comfy sandals, loose linen trousers and a t shirt, it was nearly 40° and we walked everywhere and I was surprisingly okay!

Rocketpants50 · 30/04/2024 20:07

Have walked miles in both my fitflop sandals and my teva sandals. Fitflop are smarter if you need to dress up a bit but super comfortable. Teva lived in these all summer, no breaking in needed either.

Found linen trousers and long skirts worked well - though I def needed some chub rub shorts!

This sounds like a good plan. Less sunscreen coverage and mentioned upthread and might look quite nice and chic.
(Sorry if you wanted practical advice, assumed you were chasing the holiday chic dream).
Myself I'd just have some mountain warehouse walking sandals and be done with it haha.

dragonscannotswim · 30/04/2024 20:10

Birkies or Skechers work for me.

Remember that a lot of Rome is cobbled, which can be a PITA to walk on.

Fashion sandals - no.
Comfy sandals with a soft sole - yes!

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 30/04/2024 20:11

Honestly it’s not worth it. Think hardcore orthopaedic. You won’t care if you look nice if you can’t go on any longer because your feet are bleeding.

I adore Rome but it’s brutal on the feet. Cobbles and uneven paving, lots of stairs and a step count of 20000+ easily a day.

Take some cute sandals and wear them to dinner but make sure you’ve got some tried and tested footwear you can trek in.

JuanTabo · 30/04/2024 19:46

Rome is brutal on the feet! If you wear sandals please try not to walk too far each day.

Depends on how comfy your shoes are. I managed fine doing a full day sightseeing in my trusty Havaianas Lunas!

vipersnest1 · 30/04/2024 20:12

Whatever you wear, make sure your feet don't get sweaty in them - Rome is very dusty. Fond memories of DC1 deciding their feet were hot and pouring water on them, which then attracted a very fetching brown layer.

Squishwallow · 30/04/2024 20:15

Definitely Skechers sandals, lots of foam on the bottom to soften the blow. They won't look stylish but they'll be comfy.

Don't do saltwaters, I remember seeing someone on here who said they slipped and fell all over Rome because they had no grip at all.

RosesAndHellebores · 30/04/2024 20:17

If you are going to wear dresses/skirts, unless you have hollows in your inner thighs, pack and wear, some chub rub shorts. My feet were fine in Rome but goodness the friction burns on my thighs were sore. My BMI BTW was 25! then

Womanofcustard · 30/04/2024 20:17

I’d go for trainers or walking shoes. So much litter and potholes!

3usernames · 30/04/2024 20:18

Get some walking sandals (and break them in before you go). Rome is hard on the legs and feet.

ManchesterBeatrice · 30/04/2024 20:50

Thanks loads, and yes, I wasn't thinking of any any type of fashion sandal, I was definitely thinking of more of a walking sandal type, or something with a comfortable soul.

I'm fairly slim, but will bear in mind the chub rub shorts, with the skirts and dresses!

There for, a couple of weeks! But will be touring Italy in general afterwards.

When I went to Rome every tourist except me was wearing hiking sandals. I got very jealous.

There is no need to look fashionable (unless you want to) as there are so many tourists. Also it's hard to compete with the native Romans who will be out and about in heels, despite the cobbles.

protectthesmallones · 30/04/2024 20:58

I did Rome in the summer. Yes to sandals but make sure they have padded soles. I prefer memory foam. And take a few pairs.

muddyford · 30/04/2024 21:01

I wore Hotter walking sandals. Brilliant. Think they are called Walk or Tour.

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 30/04/2024 21:13

I am on my second pair of these having worn the first out over about three summers. https://www.office.co.uk/view/product/office_catalog/7,317/4175852583

The sole is a combination of rubber and a sort of cork-like substance. I do loads of steps in them in summer - definitely need a bit of wearing in but not weeks or anything.
