To consider sandals to do Rome in June?

I've been rattling my head about what to wear on my feet for a hot holiday in Europe in June/July.

We just don't get the kind of consistent weather where I am in the UK, and I'm pondering sandals, I love the look of anything and brown Leather, but will they be genuinely comfortable enough to tour the town?

Is there such a thing as a comfortable sandal, I'm not massively bothered about fashion!

Does anybody have any recommendations, much appreciated if so!

Ohh I have had these in tan and coral. I do find them comfortable but I'm a weirdo who finds £2 flipflops comfortable and will wear them to death.

Going by the correspondence found in Vindolanda (see, I was listening on that school trip!), Romans wore thick woollen socks with their sandals.

Gen Z don't seem to appreciate their adoption of truly classic(al) fashion when they've got their socks up their trouser legs and sporting a pair of slides.

We went to Rome last July and it was 40 degrees but I wore trainers! 20k steps per day combined with the cobblestones are a killer.

Wear a well seasoned pair of trainers and maybe then a pair of sandals for the evenings

I’ve been to Rome 4 times in the summer, walked over 20k steps a day each time. Wore Birkenstocks the entire time, I’d just say wear them in a little beforehand.

Oh yes and deffo chub rub/ cycling shorts under your dresses/skirts

Whatever you do buy them ahead of time and wear them in. Nothing worse than blisters on holiday. And take a pair of trainers that you’ve already worn in.

I wore Hotter Tourists round Rome. No problems at all, very comfortable! And never need breaking in for me.

Yes but wearing shorts is frowned upon if you want to visit churches. My husband got an eye roll from a very well turned out signora for looking scruffy (cargo shorts). I was a bit mortified!
For shoes, I'd go gold birkies and a pair of superga.

I’ve found rikers comfortable for lots of walking - they didn’t rub

I lived in Rome for years. It's very harsh on the feet, particularly if you are cramming in loads of touristy stuff & the metro is far too hot to use if you are going in summer, so you really end up clocking up the steps very quickly. I always wore trainers for daytime if I was in town then sandals in the evening. You have to be careful with sandals that they don't rub the tops of your feet in the heat as that can be painful, so trainers are probably your safest bet, and saves constantly applying suncream to that part of your body.

It is a stunning place, hope you enjoy. Live like the Italians - go out early mornings and late evenings, don't do anything outdoors in the afternoon - it's incredibly hot & can really get to you very quickly

Found some really gorgeous comfortable, leather hush puppy sandals. And also got some nice walking sandals coming as well. So feel well covered now.

I think the reality is trainers and good socks are still the best option for a lot of walking round Rome and similar places.

Saltwater sandals are incredibly comfortable and last forever.
I love my birkenstocks but you must break them in, tricky if the weather at home is iffy.

I walked miles in my Birkenstocks in Rome, but they were well worn in, it’s not a new sandals destination. Lots of walking on a city break, comfort is needed

I've got some walking sandals that are fugly and make me look like the tourist I am, but they are so comfortable for walking around a city in.

I think if you're not used to sandals it's better to get them and wear them quite a bit before committing to any long walks in them

Birkenstocks.

They have a bit of a barrier that you have to go through but then I could literally walk hundreds of miles in them. I'm just breaking a new pair in and have to keep reminding myself that when they come good, they will be very good indeed!
