To consider sandals to do Rome in June?

I've been rattling my head about what to wear on my feet for a hot holiday in Europe in June/July.

We just don't get the kind of consistent weather where I am in the UK, and I'm pondering sandals, I love the look of anything and brown Leather, but will they be genuinely comfortable enough to tour the town?

Is there such a thing as a comfortable sandal, I'm not massively bothered about fashion!

Does anybody have any recommendations, much appreciated if so!

When in Rome.....

Excellent 🤣

I love my Birkenstocks! They're moulded to my feet and so so comfortable, I've happily done 30k steps in them a day on a hot (35*) holiday.

MojoDojoCasaHouse · 30/04/2024 19:38

Why would this be unreasonable??

CharlotteStreetW1 · 30/04/2024 19:38

I wore Birkenstocks (Mayari) when I first visited Rome. We did about 20,000 steps one day and they were fine.

ManchesterBeatrice · 30/04/2024 19:39

It's a traffic for the post thing really 🥰

Thanks, I did wonder about Birkenstocks, I couldn't work it out of my feet might slip around in them.

Depends if she teams them with socks and a lobster tan.

ManchesterBeatrice · 30/04/2024 19:39

Yes! I was gonna!

It's sort of leads to the next point, I'll need to be surgically removed from my jeans and jumpers, not entirely sure what I'm gonna wear full stop To be honest.

I got some really comfy and fairly attractive sandals from new look last year that I did plenty of walking in. Just remember to put sun cream on your feet (I burn easily)!

2nd this.

RosesAndHellebores · 30/04/2024 19:45

I did Rome in sandals but tried and tested comfy ones. Josef Siebel. I'd have thought:

Merrill
Siebel
Teva
Rieker
Hotter (tourist)
Fitflop

Birkies if they are well worn a personal staple. They don't work for me.

EmilyTjP · 30/04/2024 19:46

Birkenstocks are not comfortable for my feet at all!

New Look and Next do a comfort sole which work well for me.

JuanTabo · 30/04/2024 19:46

Rome is brutal on the feet! If you wear sandals please try not to walk too far each day.

JasonTindallsTan · 30/04/2024 19:46

If you get Birkenstocks make sure you break them in. I got some new (bloody expensive!! 😲) ones and wore them on a recent holiday and on the first day with a bit of light exploring I got a massive blister and they shredded the top of my foot where the strap rubbed. Stupid shoes.

SeismicSalad · 30/04/2024 19:47

I love Reef flip flops and find them very comfortable

menopausalmare · 30/04/2024 19:48

Another vote for Birkenstocks, mayari.

Guineaguineaguinea · 30/04/2024 19:48

I wore sandals that I hadn’t broken in when we visited Rome. My feet didn’t thank me. If you’re sure they’re comfortable, go for it. But if I go back I’ll be wearing trainers all the way.

On a serious note op, Italy seem to have a much more conservative/chic fashion feel than blighty. For weather that would have us reaching for our short shorts, they have tailored full length jeans and dark jackets. If my memory serves me, the local uniform was insanely glossy simple styled long hair, fitted tops, jeans and leather, good skin and very skinny.
Very jealous obviously.

Me too - well, not last year but the most comfortable sandals I’ve ever worn are comfort sole from New Look. I’ve walked miles in them and they’re still good as new.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/04/2024 19:49

If Birkenstocks don't suit your feet , try on various types of walking sandal. They're made for the job. Mine are Merrells - they're not pretty but they're good for walking in when it's warm.

Do wear any sandals for a while before you go, IME there may be some initial friction in any style. And carry a few decent sized plasters to be on the safe side.

Createausername1970 · 30/04/2024 19:50

I have a pair of karrimore sandals. They are so comfortable.

You'll need things that cover shoulders and knees if you're visiting any churches.

There's a lot of walking involved, so if you wear sandals, they've got to be seriously comfy, so make sure you really break them in.

We went end of may/ beginning of June. I wore my adidas pumps. Comfy and no sweaty feet 🤣

Yes, but tourists don't need to conform to their standards. There will be lots of stereotypical Americans in sneakers etc.
