Jacket Potato Drama

So, I have 3 kids in primary school, today we received a notification on the school app about next years school lunches, where we live it’s universal very school meals in primary and packed lunches are highly discouraged.

Currently every day there are 2 mains (typically one vegan and one meat based apart from veggie Wednesday where both are veggie/vegan friendly), soup, Jacket Potato’s with toppings and some pre-packed sandwiches available. Yogurt, fruit and Jelly available for dessert.

The school has informed us that next year there will be no Jacket Potatoes. They reason being they want to encourage children to have more varied school meals and reduce food waste.
Next year the kids will have the option of either

  • Soup and Main Meal
  • Main Meal and Dessert
  • Soup, Sandwich/Wrap and Main Meal

Well well well there is outrage … it was all that was being spoken about at the gate and several parents have informed the group chat that they will be sending emails as this isn’t good enough and now their children won’t have hot meals at all as they don’t like the main offerings!! (Someone should let them know soup is hot!)

AIBU to think this is crazy and no Jacket Potato is fine, surely the options there are enough? Would you be happy with this or no?

I've just scrolled up. So funny because mine have packed lunch because the school doesn't serve halal (nor do i expect them too). So I provide my own lunch.

Not sure what all the hate is further up. Don't like it, don't eat it. Up to you, completely up to you and for whatever reason you like.

Don’t come on here with your common sense approach. WinkGrin

hoping you get the playful intent with this post

@Spinet my DD is 3 and loves soup, she's been eating it since she was a baby my mum makes it for lunch a lot when we go over

Long may that continue! She's an outlier I'm afraid, though I confess I have not done an empirical / peer reviewed study on the number of UK primary school kids who like soup. Based on my experience it would be a small number. I mean I think it's ridiculous as every soup is so different from another but try telling that to a 6 yr old.

It will be the parents whose kids are fussy eaters kicking off... they will have to introduce the suggested "varied" food at home now and cba

How dare you! Have you never heard of ARFID? Also plenty of children with Autism are extremely fussy eaters and CANNOT HELP IT.
Nothing to do with "cba"

Your prejudice is shining through.

And yes ,it's a form or racism, whether you like it or not.

Christians are marrying little girls... Look at America, there's child brides in a Christian country.

So you’re Muslim are you because no on in their right mind would defend this.

Springchickenonion · 03/05/2024 16:36

Lots of muslim bashing on mumsnet recently.

No ones marrying little girls @threatmatrix

Seriously need to do some proper reading and educate yourself.

I do all the time. You’re blinkered. Let’s leave it at that.

Springchickenonion · 03/05/2024 16:49

Well clearly you don't. Otherwise you wouldn't spout such utter rubbish. @threatmatrix

How sad.

No one in their right mind believes all meat sold in Asda is halal, that Islam is a barbaric religion etc

@threatmatrix 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I have 4 businesses with my husband. 2 are solely my own. Don't claim a dot. Like you said I don't know you and you don't know me. And you really don't know what you are talking about.

You are not a very nice person.

I don't know who's been reporting your posts. But I hope they stay up so everyone can see how you are.

You do know that some Christian communities also practice FGM - don't you?

FGM has been around longer than either religion.

Springchickenonion · 04/05/2024 14:02

Well that's been an interesting 24 hours.

well this thread on jacket potatoes has certainly escalated :/

DrCoconut · 04/05/2024 14:55

If someone truly wants to eliminate all halal food from their diet then that will be an extremely restrictive choice. If they mean meat then asking for more information or eating a veggie option when out is the answer. As a coeliac I have to question what I might be about to eat regularly. And yes to people who have said jacket potatoes are in general a good option for minimising allergen risk as well as maybe being a safe option for people with SN.
