Have I become a horrible older person?

I know most of you will disagree with me but I’m just hoping someone will understand.

I am a 66 yr old F. I went to see Olly Murs & Take that in concert the other night. Olly was on from 19:30 until 20:15 then Take That from about 20:45 for 2 hrs.

2 girls in their 20’s in the row behind me (directly behind me so in my ear) had obviously learnt every word to every song and were thoroughly enjoying themselves singing along.

Now here was the problem. They weren’t just singing along , they were singing at the tops of their voices literally shouting throughout every song. It really spoilt the concert for me. About 30 mins before the end I snapped and asked them nicely to tone it down. My sister & my friend said I shouldn’t have done that. AIBU?

You paid good money to be entertained by professional performers - not to be deafened by a couple of screech-owl Harpies.

Thumbs up!

Have you heard Howard and Mark singing lately? Grin. Even Gary is sounding quite rough

But yes I can sympathise with the OP. I went to see Renee Rapp recently and the audience singing was incredibly loud. Sometimes you just want to hear the artist singing. It was still an amazing night but it did make me wonder if I'm getting too old to go to concerts now.

Vastlyoverrated · 28/04/2024 13:13

In most pop concerts, the artists encourage you to sing along. I think expecting people to sing quietly at a Take That concert is unrealistic!

Vastlyoverrated · 28/04/2024 13:15

You are not really paying to hear them sing- singing along, dancing, chanting and audience participation is normal at pop concerts, you are paying for the experience of seeing Take That live with tens of thousands of other people. Usually, they are happy people are singing along loudly as their vocals aren't all that!

last month your thread was being pissed off about women leaving handbags on the table

Is this a monthly pattern with this poster?

JLou08 · 28/04/2024 13:16

It's a pop concert not the theatre. People are going to let themselves go and sing loudly. I think YABU and concerts aren't for you.

Gillypie23 · 28/04/2024 13:26

Yes you're a miserable git

Vastlyoverrated · 28/04/2024 13:28

Theatre and cinema are different, they tell you in the cinema now to put off your phone, stop talking and people are quite obedient since the more direct adverts came out. You can't stop them rustling sweets at the quiet bits though.

PhuckyNell · 28/04/2024 13:33

who doesn't sing at a concert? Isn't that the point? Yabu

I honestly hate this attitude. Who wants to go to a gig to sit in silence? And you're ruining somebody else having a good time. Just stay at home and put Spotify on lol.

Do you really think your singing is good enough for people to pay to listen to it? Because that's what they're doing if you're so loud that they can hear nothing else.

OssieShowman · 28/04/2024 13:47

That was me at the recent Pink concert in Aus. They were next to me jigging in their seats, screaming along. They eventually left to join the mosh pit I think.

BringItOnxxx · 28/04/2024 13:49

Going to an Olly Murs concert expecting people not to screech sing is like going to a soft play and asking kids not be hyper. It's par for the course.

2catsandhappy · 28/04/2024 13:50

Hard to say. Next time, whip your top off, turn around, wave your arms about shrieking, 'OMG this is awsome!! The louder you scream the more I take off!'
<lighthearted>
Sympathies op. You know for another time.

I think if you'd been at the opera you'd have had a point. At a pop concert though, people want to let lose.

To be fair, opera has its moments of getting pretty raucous, especially after a really popular airia or chorus. But at least you're spared the hideous singalongs because they're mostly in German, French or Italian! (The German metal band Rammstein are good for the same reason).

Rock gigs or festivals overall don't tend to attract this problem, IME. There's a separate set of issues, like don't get anywhere near the stage or the mosh pit, if there is one. You've no idea what's in the flying missiles ...

The cinema, however, is one experience I've given up on because I can't stand the full-volume conversations and constant crackling of popcorn wrappers because no one can apparently to sit still for two hours without stuffing themselves. These days a lot of people don't seem to give a damn that their constant emission of noise is disturbing other people.

You're not wrong, OP. The difficulty is, I don't think this problem is going away.

exomoon · 28/04/2024 13:56

You paid money to hear Take That and Olly Murs, not some random plebs in the back! You should have said something earlier. YANBU.

I would rather a colonoscopy than have to go to a Take That concert but that’s by the by.

SweetFemaleAttitude · 28/04/2024 13:58

Intimate gig at a small venue, I could see your point, but a massive arena gig with over 10k people, you need to get a grip lol.

Yes, it was grumpy of you. Nothing to do with your age though, as my mum is in her 70s and wouldn't piss on someone's chips the way you did.

RaraRachael · 28/04/2024 13:58

At any pop concert I've been to, the music is so loud that I couldn't hear if anybody near me was singing along.

What did annoy me was at a musical where people were singing along - even with solos. I'd paid a lot of money to hear professional singers, not tone deaf warblers.

MonsieurSpade · 28/04/2024 14:05

That would annoy me too tbf @Goldx2 .

I went to a Take That concert with dsil who had a spare ticket. Cost me £110 about 8 years ago.

Thank god The Pet Shop Boys were on first.
They were brilliant.
Most of the audience were drunk 40+ women.
The woman in front kept slumping forward and I thought she was going to go over the side.

Take That were constantly moving around on their stage props which got stuck regularly.

I tell people I went to a Pet Shop Boys concert, it's less embarrassing.

No. You must be thinking of a karaoke bar.

walnutcoffee · 28/04/2024 14:15

True story.
Many years ago my kids were at school i was in my 20s me and my sister at the time so we got the bus to go to town that day.
Some mums were at the front with some quite noisy little ones didnt bother us.
3 old ladys got on at the next stop and sat right at the back of the bus We were sort of at the back ourselves.
They started to chat at the next stop lady gets on and comes to the back to join them and i heard one say to her friend we sat at the back we cant be dealing with that noise.
The lady that just got on said well when them days are over for us you just dont want it around you any more do you.
Or loud shouting people.
I was like WTF there just kids and mums chatting i thinking you bunch of moaning old bags how rude.

WELL WELL WELL
Fast forward over 20 years on me and my sister are now them women i fully understand them.
We are now the ones that says them days are over and i dont want all the screaming around me.
Why do people have to talk so bloody loud they stand next to each other.
I dont see myself as old i see it as im more aware of things around me now.

I will never forget that day because im now them.😁

Honestly why attend live performances and these type of events if you want a sit down serenade? Get into classical or something, it's a fucking pop gig of course there's going to be screaming fans and singing. Jesus Christ what a boring fucking gig without and absolutely not in the spirit of things.

it would certainly appear so

Viviennemary · 28/04/2024 14:51

It's cheeky. You didnt go to hear these two idiots singing.

peakygold · 28/04/2024 15:03

I hate live music for lots of reasons, but I don't understand why anyone would pay £££ for a ticket, just to sit there screaming the songs instead of trying to listen to the actual performance. It's just moronic. YANBU.
