Young neighbours have just moved in next door. This morning (wasn't eavesdropping, honest) heard a relative ask if they had met any of their neighbours, oh yes they replied...there is a nice old woman next door. Old? I'M ONLY 63!!

This got me wondering if I was giving off 'old lady' vibes.

Possible indications:

I occasionally glance in a shop mirror and wonder why my mum is there dressed in my clothes.
My pubic hair is disappearing, and seems to be making it's way to my chin
Last week I bought 3 lovely geraniums
Last year I bought and planted a hydrangea in my garden
After a couple of tiny accidents, am wondering if I should buy some tena lady knickers.
Caught myself wondering if I should crochet a bed jacket ...it can be chilly in bed whilst reading a book!
Am having actual conversations with my cat
My box room is stuffed with wool ' just in case'
This morning, completely out of the blue found myself singing the song from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and I CAN'T GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD.
Jumped - in my motor-car - and bought 3 more geraniums

Indications I am not old:

Ermm, I am young in my head!

I am not being unreasonable, you are in your prime!
I am unreasonable. You are heading into old biddy territory!

@Tryingtokeepgoing we do not live to 90ish on average. The median age for women to die is 82 years old.

I know, but I’m an optimist and rounded up ;)

ByUmberViewer · 27/04/2024 15:13

You are old. 63 is old. I'm approaching that age myself.

Is being old a problem?

I take issue with this. I’m 65 in July (40 in my head). I intend to live another 30 years (plenty of people live well into their 90s these days)! How can I be old?

IWouldLikeToKnow · 28/04/2024 17:42

Well I am 49 and got called ma’am by a young lad in a shop today.

WhatShallIdo11 · 28/04/2024 17:42

No you’re not old - nor am I and approaching 67 but you can excuse faux pas stuff as being an age thing - comes in handy sometimes. I was asked by a bank a few days ago whether I needed help with doing on-line banking - noooo - I’ve just retired from a working life in IT. As a single lady, it’s surprising how many younger men prefer an old girl 😂

You can't be old and you're not

I feel your pain, when my boiler broke down the engineer called Worcester Bosch trying to get me an urgent visit and called me a vulnerable elderly customer - I was outraged 😂 (PS I also talk to the cat 😸)

Ah, but does the cat answer you?

I’d say 60s and 70s are old lady territory. 80+ I’d say is elderly.

Blimey! I’m 72 and don’t consider myself an old lady. Or does ‘blimey’ give me away!

Embrace it and wear purple around them.

With a red hat. A large red hat.

My DH was asked for ID when buying beer in the US.
He's 70!

WHY?!! 😂 No-one of 70 looks too young to buy alcohol. 70 year olds look 70! Yep they really do! This, along with '63 is sooo YOUNG' (that a few people have said,) is turning this into a batshit thread! 😆

As a pp said, the average age for a woman to live is 82. You're around 80% of the way through your expected life span at 63

I don't think 63 is VERY old, but let's stop this '63 is YOUNG' nonsense. It's just daft! 😆

The Blimey is the first clue 😂I'm not sure anyone really considers themselves old, but you are a pensioner, as in... an old age pensioner... which, presuming you're a lady, makes you an old lady!

(Caveated with I am saying this from the safety of my 30s! I suspect I'll think different in my 60s!)

Julie2024 · 28/04/2024 17:55

My kid says am old, am 48. I think anyone over 40 is old personally. You then become an old biddy at 70.

Snowball777 · 28/04/2024 17:57

Ha ha, you have a brilliant sense of humour, just spat out my coffee reading your post OP!

Leakywellies · 28/04/2024 18:06

You’re only as old as you feel, I’m almost 60 and off to Ibiza next month, clubbing with the 40 year old kids, I can guarantee on being the last woman standing but I also love a geranium or three 😊

Happy to have cheered you up on another cold and rainy Sunday! Lots of other old lady threads today, but they are all mean old ladies haha

I overheard my neighbour say 'she's old enough to be my mum' I'm 40 she's about 26!!! I mean it's not out of the realms of possibility I suppose but I was a bit meh 🫤

I hate ma'am, it's horrible, especially when I'm a miss! Generally hate titles anyway, they are stupid.

ImagineImagine · 28/04/2024 18:13

I do most of those things and I’m 44!🤣Who cares what anyone thinks. As long as you’re happy!

TenseElongatedRightFinger · 28/04/2024 18:13

Brilliant post, you're a very funny woman, but I think if you put yourself in the place of a 20-30 something who is potentially half to a third of your age then you are wise enough to answer your own question.

AgitatedGoose · 28/04/2024 18:14

@NoisySnail I don’t agree entirely with everyone over 60 being more vulnerable. I think it depended on what other medical problems you had and whether you were overweight. I’m not over 60 but never saw myself as vulnerable, went out to work everyday and didn’t avoid anything.

Thistlewoman · 28/04/2024 18:22

You sound lovely-and you are not old at all! Try buying some saucy underwear and hanging it out to dry on your washing line in your garden. Talk loudly in your garden to a complicit visiting friend/family member about your next sky-dive/trek across the Sahara. Tell the new neighbours you are thinking of throwing a mad all nighter party and you want to apologise in advance for any disturbance. That will sack off the old lady vibes.. Alternatively, go full 'old lady' and do whatever you feel like doing, at any time of the day or night, wear whatever you feel like whenever you feel like it and fill your garden with geraniums. Enjoy! You've earned it👍🏻

Missingpop · 28/04/2024 18:24

Your only as old as the man your in bed with or by how long the batteries last in your vibrator 😂😂😂

Worntounravelling · 28/04/2024 18:24

If it’s any consolation, at work we describe patients in their 60s as “really young”, particularly if they’re healthy and active. We don’t start talking about being elderly until they’re in their 80s. I’m mid thirties myself so that’s not just wishful thinking on my part ;)

SadieSeptember · 28/04/2024 18:30

You sound old to me, and I’m 70!
