What could these marks be? Bed bugs? Please help!

Hello, wrong place I know but I'm going out of my mind with paranoia that I have bedbugs after my son has developed some random spots on his face legs and torso (not chicken pox).

I will admit I have moderate anxiety and occasional episode of extremely consuming obsessive thoughts. So in my head I have told my self we definitely have bed bugs. I have checked exactly where they tell you to check and haven't found bugs as such rather bits of dust and flecks of dirt that I have convinced myself is their poo. I have just flipped my mattress over and there are all these rusty coloured spots on the bottom. Is this a sign? Can the bed bugs get inside your mattress. Unlikely I know as they are very uniform spots but there is the random odd patch you can't quite see here!

I know I'm being unreasonable and obsessive but it's taken over my mind and day/evening and I'm spiralling. I even set up shop on the sofa for the night (I know they would follow me but cpildnt bare the thought of my bed). Then I thought I can't let my son see me like this! Gahhhh help please someone!!

What could these marks be? Bed bugs? Please help!

No idea OP but I did hear someone recently saying they aren't any more prevalent now than they used to be.
I'd ring a local pest control company if you're worried. I'm sure they can sort out as needed.

Does your mattress have springs?

BluntPoet · 27/04/2024 00:34

Looks like spring marks to me. Way too orderly to be bed bugs.

I had to message as I also had a neurotic bed bug scare after spots appearing on my torso. I similarly did a manic clean but found nothing. I called a local pest controller who were so helpful. They said you would find hard evidence if you have bedbugs so it doesn't sound likely that you've got them. He said you'd find a bug in a thorough clean (check creases of mattress where it meets the top). You can put double sided tape on bed legs at the bottom to see if they're crawling up. Have you recently bought a second hand mattress or brought any other second hand soft furnishing into the house? That's often the start apparently. I don't know what the cause of my spots was in the end but it wasn't bedbugs and I hope you'll be the same.

Thank you everyone for your replies! Yes I do have springs in my mattress and the marks are only on the side I sleep (I'm single incase you couldn't guess 🤣). I'm in bed now feeling alot more relaxed and have done a few checks since and nothing has appeared!

I don't have any second hand furniture luckily. My mum is extremely old fashioned and gets horribly offended by the mere thought of not buying yourself nice things you work hard for (so she refuses to allow me to bring anything second hand into my home unless it's from a source vetted by her and yes I'm in my 30s and no it's not worth the effort to argue with her 🤣🙈).

It's a wake up call though that I need to have a major comfort out of the house
