To think no one is testing for Covid anymore?

A work colleague has just messaged our team WhatsApp in a bit of a rant as they've got Covid. They are blaming it on someone who came into the office earlier this week with a blatant heavy cold thing. Colleague with cold is saying that they don't think it's Covid, but haven't tested and don't plan to, and that Covid colleague could have got it from anywhere.

It's now going into an argument about testing - a couple of people are still testing any time they get cold symptoms, but most are saying they won't bother. Covid colleague says we all need to test now as we were all in on Monday together for a meeting.

AIBU to think no one is testing anymore, and it's not necessary?

People should still be testing unless they are totally selfish. Of course you can buy tests. Don't spread the virus please.

Kandalama · 24/04/2024 23:37

We really have no idea how many people are seriously affected by covid now as unlike other countries the uk are not publishing figures anymore.
As of February this year covid was still in the country based on tested cases in hospitals.

Reported deaths due to covid for example Last week
173 people died in the US
54 died in Germany
21 died in Italy

It isn’t now and never was just a cold!

SullyW · 24/04/2024 23:38

@Kandalama where do you find that data? im guessing most of those people may have had long term covid but its awful to hear those numbers are still happening

Yeah

only weirdos who don't want to pass it on to vulnerable people or want to get meds to hopefully prevent having to go into hospital.

Can you even buy tests now?

I ordered from amazon and bought some from Boots.

All during Covid all countries reported figures of cases, deaths etc on ‘Worldometer’
The uk don’t anymore but many still do.

Total uk deaths from Covid when uk last reported (April 2024 ) was

YABU to think noone tests anymore, as some people obviously do.

Going to the office with heavy cold is antisocial no matter whether it is COVID or something else.

Lesina · 24/04/2024 23:14

I’m delighted no one is testing anymore. Prior to 2020 we didn’t test for colds or flu.

@Lesina
And we still don't. COVID is neither of those.

i can't believe 4 years in& some people don't get that!!

Worth checking the website before you go on holiday.

pizzaHeart · 24/04/2024 23:51

The last time I did a test was before flu jab last October but I always stay at home if unwell anyway.
This thread reminded me to order some tests, our previous ones became out of date a month ago.

RandomButtons · 24/04/2024 23:53

I tested DC a few months back because they had freaky symptoms (temp, headache, vomiting) and I wanted to rule out meningitis. Then tested myself because she was positive.

haven’t tested for any of the other 100 bugs we’ve had in the last year

And patients having cancer treatment.
And carers caring for the vulnerable elderly.
And nurses looking after sick babies.
And many other reasons that might not affect you but greatly affect others.

You should try and get hold of a moron test.

I'm a care worker for the elderly, and it is my company policy now that we don't test.
This is the same for everyone I know who works in other domiciliary care companies (in my area anyway).

My workplace policy states that we should attend work if we are able to - without testing.
If we have symptoms which mean we are too unwell to work, then we should stay at home - without testing.

If we feel just slightly unwell, but still able to come to work, then we should attend our calls. Again, without testing.

In my fairly wide experience of care work, nobody is testing any more.

Tetchypants · 24/04/2024 23:54

Weekly starts for the UK early April. 1164 per week admitted to hospital, 96 deaths.

Eze · 24/04/2024 23:54

I test if I have cold symptoms as I like to know if I’m going to be stuffed up for a few days or really bloody sick for a month.

Galumphinggaloot · 24/04/2024 22:57

Genuine question as I don't know anyone who tests,

What do they achieve by testing? If they're sick and find out it's Covid, what can they do with that knowledge?

Get anti virals

Holstomorrow · 24/04/2024 23:58

I don’t test, I don’t know anyone who tests and I can’t see the point testing.

Eze · 24/04/2024 23:58

As an aside, for anyone vulnerable health wise, or knows someone who is, the spring covid vaccination drive has started so book yourselves in as about a week ago you could only get a jab by exception.

FuzzyWuzzyWuzABear · 24/04/2024 23:58

Pretty sure my DH has Covid and we've got tests in the cupboard but neither of us see the point in him taking one.

If he's well enough to work (which he is) then he has to go to work.

And before anyone suggests it, no he doesn't have the privilege of working from home.

You will always get the people who don’t give a shit about spreading viruses. You will always also get individuals who trot out the “oh we never tested before covid”. These are the people who probably deny covid ever happened or those not affected by it.

This may be the company policy and I’m not surprised as that what the UK Govn are telling people.
However
Given your work with the elderly do you think your companies policy is responsible.

Eze · 25/04/2024 00:03

What I get out of testing is knowledge and a bit of time, I have a day or two before I get very sick to arrange cover for my work, sort food for the DC, get ready for my sickness & prepare the DC, and last time it happened I had to liaise with my holiday insurance, doctor and travel agent to cancel my holiday. 😓

Those of you who have your health and can dismiss covid out of hand now are incredibly fortunate.

Growlybear83 · 25/04/2024 00:04

I didn't feel too well at the weekend and had Covid-like symptoms, and so did a test. I don't want to put vulnerable people at unnecessary risk if I've got Covid and I don't think it's much of a hardship to do a test. .

Shocking isn’t it. No reporting and no one’s interested anymore !
The Govn will only become interested when more and more people become unable to work due to long covid and new research on long term effects actually ‘costing’ the nhs.

rockstarshoes · 25/04/2024 00:24

I had a fever last month, aches & pains struggled to get out of bed, along with a cough from hell, I tested it was negative.

When it wasn't shifting I made GP appt, I'm asthmatic I wore a mask to the GP & to the pharmacist to pick up my antibiotics!

I mean for gods sake Covid or not now we know that wearing a mask can help stop the spread why wouldn't you? 🤷‍♀️
