To think no one is testing for Covid anymore?

A work colleague has just messaged our team WhatsApp in a bit of a rant as they've got Covid. They are blaming it on someone who came into the office earlier this week with a blatant heavy cold thing. Colleague with cold is saying that they don't think it's Covid, but haven't tested and don't plan to, and that Covid colleague could have got it from anywhere.

It's now going into an argument about testing - a couple of people are still testing any time they get cold symptoms, but most are saying they won't bother. Covid colleague says we all need to test now as we were all in on Monday together for a meeting.

AIBU to think no one is testing anymore, and it's not necessary?

I do, just because I work in the public sector and wouldn't want to pass it on to vulnerable people. I pay for the tests, not a company policy etc x

Very rarely see anyone with a mask on any more either. Did see two women masked up in Ikea on Saturday afternoon and my first thought was if you have covid, or are vulnerable enough to think you need to wear a mask, what are you doing in Ikea on a Saturday afternoon?

Maybe they were just having a day out? If it's busy/crowded makes sense for them to wear a mask if they're vulnerable
I'm not vulnerable for a small amount of time, it's lifelong so it's balancing being sensible with not missing out on stuff

I can't think oh I'll never go to a supermarket or shop on a weekend ever again

RufustheFactualReindeer · 24/04/2024 22:46

I tested about a month ago….can’t quite remember why

it was because we were visiting someone or they were visiting us and they were vulnerable but i honestly don’t remember

stayathomer · 24/04/2024 22:46

I’d only test if I had eg lost sense of smell/ horrific sore throat/ extreme extreme fatigue or some other obvious symptom of it as I couldn’t pass it onto my mum. And that would just be to give her a solid reason we couldn’t visit. Even two years before Covid we couldn’t visit as we had a flu type thing and that would land her in hospital

I think people only test now when they want to isolate from work 😂🤣😂

If they work with vulnerable people, like the elderly, understandable. Some few jobs do need some consideration, not like before when it was a skive for lazy people I hope. Xxx

Because some of us still want to have a life! The lack of understanding or comprehension is so ignorant at times and I never understand why mask wearing bothers some people so much.

For a lot of us with CEV status the health issues are already serious enough to have a very negative impact on day to day life. I take responsibility for my own health and that includes my mental health too and it’s important that I feel I can maintain some normality and still have some control. Hence wearing a ffp2 mask when out, limiting my exposure as best as I can, can’t sit in coffee shops or restaurants anymore but I want to feel that I’m still part of society!

Rookangaroo4 · 24/04/2024 22:50

I had loads of tests left over from when the kids used to get them at school. I threw them out a few weeks ago as the liquid had evaporated in every one of them.

Tel12 · 24/04/2024 22:50

All close family would test if they are coming to us and they are a bit unwell as DH is cev. We would also test if feeling unwell.

2chocolateoranges · 24/04/2024 22:50

Last time we tested was when mil was in hospital with breathing difficulty and we tested before we visited, just in case.

however that was 18months ago.

we have all had a cold and cough and none of us have tested, no point testing . You don’t need to isolate or stay off work. I work in early years and can guarantee plenty kids have been in with covid symptoms, it’s all part of the job. No work colleague is testing either.

madameparis · 24/04/2024 22:51

Haven’t done a covid test for maybe 18 months to two years now. Total waste of time. The advice is the same whether you have covid, flu or a cold.

If you have a high temperature or feel too unwell to be at school/work then stay at home and don’t socialise with others.

If you don’t have a temperature and you just have mild symptoms eg sore throat, runny nose, bit of a cough……. then you should continue going to work. And be mindful of regular hand washing, keep a bit of distance from people where possible.

They might just be being courteous in not spreading whatever they have, in the Asian fashion. You do not have to be vulnerable to not want to catch COVID, or anything else.

One of the few good things to come out of COVID has been a wider consciousness of limiting the impact we have in infecting others.

What astonishing ignorance. I'm sorry you have to cope with life with your limited intellect and empathy. You must struggle

unless your mask is a proper fit tested one it’s a waste of time

Nope, it’s testing weirdos who struggle with life

Galumphinggaloot · 24/04/2024 22:57

Flopsythebunny · 24/04/2024 22:32

There are thousands of CEV people who are still testing, some are even still shielding completely or only going to medical appointments

Genuine question as I don't know anyone who tests,

What do they achieve by testing? If they're sick and find out it's Covid, what can they do with that knowledge?

@MissBedelia Nope. I suspect it's people who have up put up with you that struggle with life but that's not their fault.

If there is someone in your life who is CEV then a decent person would test before visiting. For example, my close family member with terminal cancer. How does testing make me a weirdo?

NerrSnerr · 24/04/2024 23:04

I'm a nurse visiting care homes and I visit when feeling unwell as many of the care homes are still closing if they get positive Covid tests for staff or residents so I don't want to cause an outbreak. I'd WFH though unless too unwell to actually work.

I do agree with this in a way.
What did CEV people do before Covid and covid testing kits existed?
if they shielded before or only attended medical appointments then Covid hasn’t changed anything.
If you have the symptoms of Covid and are testing because you are planning on meeting someone who is vulnerable you drop your plans regardless surely. Otherwise if it isn’t Covid do you think “oh well, I don’t have Covid, I’ll go then.”?
If you’re unwell you just wouldn’t visit anyone that was vulnerable! Why would it matter if you ‘knew what you were dealing with’ or not?

No, I don’t test, and don’t know anyone who does. Other people testing still has no impact on my life whatsoever but I do wonder what CEV people did before Covid. Because Covid surely hasn’t changed anything for them if they’ve always had to be extra cautious.

Because you could have many illnesses.

Just don’t visit if unwell, exercise common sense

checkedshirts · 24/04/2024 23:09

I test because if I get covid I have to have iv antivirals. No one else tests in the family and we're certainly not shielding etc.

JulianFawcettMP · 24/04/2024 23:09

It's worth remembering that many people with covid can be asymptomatic. But the CEV person in their life might not be if they get it. So, given tested are available, why would you chance it? I

I only test in on those circumstances though

Galumphinggaloot · 24/04/2024 23:09

@TheChosenTwo

I think the idea is you test before visiting someone CEV even if you feel well as you might have symptomless covid and give it to them. But that's true of any illness and you can test for everything.

I agree with you.

According to PP there are thousands of people staying at home all the time like hermits, but what did they do before covid?

JulianFawcettMP · 24/04/2024 23:11

@MissBedelia as I said I my previous post, many of us are asymptomatic with covid. So how would you know without testing?

I don't think that asymptomatic flu is common for example. Do you really not get that?
