A village caught in the grip of a shoplifting epidemic by feral children have called in private security to patrol their streets
Villagers in Barnham, West Sussex say they are being held hostage by youths fighting, looting shops, vandalising property and threatening staff.
Antisocial behaviour in the leafy coastal village has continued despite extra police carrying out patrols and making 14 arrests.
Local businesses said youths steal alcoholfrom Tesco Express and the Co-op near the railway station and then get 'very aggressive'.
There was also a report of a trespasser and also sightings of children climbing fences near the railway line that runs through the village last Tuesday.

The owner of a small taxi firm nearby said between 60 and 100 commuters were stranded for around an hour as trains were halted, including holidaymakers on their way to Gatwick.
Arun District Council has now paid for private security guards from MS Security Services to patrol the high street in a bid to stop shoplifting and antisocial behaviour.

My parents live here, it's very scary to hear something like this happening here. This type of behaviour seems to be spreading from London to rural areas.

I grew up rurally and now am raising my dc just outside a busy city centre. We got up to so so much more in our local village as there was nothing else to do. My dc are never bored. There is too many opportunities for them to keep busy they don't need to get up to mischief . I know there is anti social behaviour in specific parts of the city due to gang culture but outside of that the teenagers round here are pretty pleasant

Bad stuff happens in some arse end of nowhere town, miles away from London. So OP blames London. Yes of course it's those rowdy London types! 🙈🙄

I’m actually quite angry that this is a thread and yet there isn’t one about the teacher being stabbed in Wales today. Really tells you everything about MN

That's probably London's fault too.

My parents live 2 minutes down the road in Yapton and they haven't mentioned any of this. How awful!

MushMonster · 25/04/2024 06:53

Walling into shops, grabbing whatever andxwalking out (without trying to cover up anything) is rather spread in US. Apparently, they cannot prosecute if below certain amount.
I do hope they are not coping what they see on the youtube videos 😟

Yes I heard about this in the US

Yeh I’m not sure it’s London on this one

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 25/04/2024 07:02

I've lived in London for 40 years now and I have never seen anti social behaviour like I did in my tiny village growing up in East anglia in the 70s and 80s.
When I was about 12 a teenager waiting for the school bus with me and my brother set fire to the bus shelter and burnt it to the ground for a laugh. That was before school in broad day light.
Also we had runaway horses long time before London.

Not sure why that one sentence about London has caused such meltdown / derailment of the thread? Also not sure how everyone missed the fact that this behaviour (groups of teenagers running into shops and stealing everything) it is RIFE in London at the moment. It regularly been in the news

https://amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/aug/09/oxford-street-shoppers-locked-in-stores-amid-social-media-robbery-campaign

. It seems to have ‘started’ or been inspired by Tictoc videos of it happening in the US.

No doubt we shall have some outraged US posters disclaiming this rather than maybe focussing in the actual issue of the exponential rise out of control teens that is being seen in schools, coastal towns and in fact everywhere (apart from London though because London MNetters say so!)

mitogoshi · 25/04/2024 07:22

Unfortunately it only takes a couple of bad apples to influence a whole load of youngsters, and in smaller places it's more visible.

We've had it here, it's one family who are the key problem, everyone knows who they are, the grandad, the dad and the teenage son all trouble but other kids seem to be fascinated by him (the teenage boy) and hang around with him, I've heard him encouraging them to steal from Lidl and laughing at the lad that refused and paid (Lidl now has extra staff before and after school and in holidays by the self checkout) low level stuff costing a pound or two but it's the principle. We are pretty sure the older brother is responsible for a spate of break ins by electric scooter as the dates correspond for when he was released from prison for dealing, police are a bit tardy in getting to reports of the crimes even when they are spotted.

Coatsoff42 · 25/04/2024 08:38

This sounds like a great plot for a
film. Cannot someone write it?

also, i am remembering all the threads where some poor parent has a wayward teen and is advised to pack up and move away from the troublesome influences, I’m imagining they have all moved to sleepy villages and started a crime wave instead of mending their ways.

i do feel sorry for the people around these teens, it’s hard to know what to do in the moment, you assume in a small village you would know the parents and families and be doing some judging and commenting to deal with it.

BrioNotBiro · 25/04/2024 08:51

"Spreading from London"? Have you been on Southern Rail recently?

Any teenagers getting on at London will likely to be pensioners and will have lost the will to riot by the time the train eventually arrives at Barnham.

Ringpeace · 25/04/2024 09:07

Livelovebehappy · 24/04/2024 19:55

Don’t think it’s to to blame for this incident, but come on. London is a cesspit. I lived there for 10 years, and the London of today is totally different to the London I lived in. Used to love it, but having been back to visit friends several times since, it’s just gone downhill. Really sad.

Hateam · 25/04/2024 09:20

I think the London comment has been fully dealt with.

I do believe there is an issue with the behaviour of teens deteriorating.

I'm a teacher. They get away with too much in school and it's spreading. Behaviour in our schools is often awful; there are few consequences for poor behaviour and too many excuses made.

eileandubh · 25/04/2024 09:26

Surely MN admins have been busy deleting any threads started about the Amnanford incident? The police were pretty clear yesterday about social media speculation/uploads being unhelpful.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 25/04/2024 10:01

coming in from London hahhaha

Haha. Maybe you’re right to a point, but I still think it’s a totally different vibe there than what there used to be. I never remembered knife crime being so high.

LoyalMember · 25/04/2024 10:08

"spreading from London" 😆 Get over yourself...

BabbleBee · 25/04/2024 10:14

Barnham is not being held hostage. Ridiculous sensationalism.

Barnham has had a handful of occasions where kids come into the village by train looking for trouble. The last incident was unpleasant and made the news which has blown it out of proportion.

Let’s be fair, this isn’t a London problem. They’re more likely to be coming from Bognor in their faux “gangs” which is perpetuated by the parents of these kids. There’s little authority or accountability, the police around the villages are non-existent and can do very little even when they do get hold of the kids.

Sunshineandpinkclouds · 25/04/2024 10:24

If you live in rural nowhere where there really isn't much too do I can see why shoplifting from the Coop is their only thrill.

Let's not blame Londoners - how about blaming the Tory government that makes no provision for youth centres so they close or low cost sports facilities e.g boxing to help troubled youths?

Bumblebeeinatree · 25/04/2024 10:27

Nothing for teenagers to do in the village? If not they will find something and it's probably trouble.
