How much should just turned 18 year old DS get as pocket money per month.

Is still at college, works part time getting at least £600 per month before overtime added.

No board to pay.
Eats food from home but pays for own driving lessons and meals out with friends.

We pay for holidays.

What are peoples thoughts/ opinions?

I’m lost. Why would he need pocket money if he has a job?

Littlefish · 23/04/2024 22:34

Nothing!

They are earning their own money, and not being charged rent.

ghostyslovesheets · 23/04/2024 22:34

nowt!

CuriousGeorge80 · 23/04/2024 22:34

Nothing! (But I would be contributing to his driving lessons if I could afford it.)

Ticktapticktap · 23/04/2024 22:35

Definitely no need to supplement any pocket money!

WittiestUsernameEver · 23/04/2024 22:35

Err... Zero?

middledagedjobseeker · 23/04/2024 22:35

If he has £150 or more each week to fund driving lessons, meals out, nights out, clothes and not much else, I don't understand why you'd top him up tbh.

Covering his food and board seems more than enough at 18.

Littletreefrog · 23/04/2024 22:35

Nothing £600 a month is plenty with no rent/big bills to pay.

space99 · 23/04/2024 22:36

I would say zero. Why would he need pocket money when he gets paid minimum £600 a month?
My DS earns approximately £360 a month and manages to save £200. I do pay for his driving lessons however.

Floralnomad · 23/04/2024 22:36

When mine had a pt job at a similar age I paid for the driving lessons but didn’t give him any actual cash .

Please make this make sense. Why as an adult with a job are you giving him money?

Really? When he's earning a minimum of £600 p/m pocket money???

FinallyPregnant23 · 23/04/2024 22:36

Another one saying nothing! He’s 18, and has a job.

TwoBlueFish · 23/04/2024 22:38

Nothing, he’s 18 and has a job with £600pm disposable income!

Mama2many73 · 23/04/2024 22:38

So basically he has £600 to spend as he wishes?? I'm sure that lots if us would.like that. Personally I don't think needs any pocket money but if you want to give him something could it be paying his college transport?

Zero.

They are 18 and have a part time job that pays well enough.

CuriousGeorge80 · 23/04/2024 22:39

@WittiestUsernameEver yes. I would contribute to all of my children learning to drive if I could afford it, like my parents did for me.

Letsgocamping67 · 23/04/2024 22:40

£0

My eldest two worked from 16 and DD3 (15) has a job lined up when she turns 16 - at that point 'pocket money' stopped - they get a roof over their heads, access to mums taxi, food, snacks, toiletries, heat, water, washing done, bus pass for college

The rest - Boohoo orders, nights out, Uber eats etc is on them - obviously they get treats but no set pocket money

Throwawayme · 23/04/2024 22:41

None

Pocket money? Why would a working 18 year old get pocket money? He's not a child, he's an adult with a job and more disposable income than a lot of families!

Surely he'd be embarrassed to be given pocket money? He SHOULD be, I would definitely have been mortified to take money off my mum once I was working.

SleepySundaySloth · 23/04/2024 22:43

My son worked part time when at college earning about £500 a month tutoring, we used to give him £150 to cover lunch, petrol and phone.

Yes, covering a bus pass for college seems fair, along with providing meals and food for him to cook himself/snacks at home. My parents still covered family days out and things like that when I was 18 with a part time job but didn't give pocket money. As I was an adult, with a job.
