People who drive 40 everywhere

Sorry this subject has probably been done to death but I let it really annoy me today so just want to get it off my chest 🤣
AIBU to be annoyed at people who drive 40mph everywhere? Following a car home today, I live in a small village of which the road to it varies between 30/60. It isn't a bad road, fairly straight on the 60 bits but I appreciate 60 isn't a target speed but it riles me up when said car is happy to speed in the 30 bits but not willing to go a little faster in the 60 bits.

Anyone else?

It’s the speeding in the 30 zones which is the most egregious. And particularly galling when they’ve just held you up by driving 20mph under the speed limit in the 60 zones.

Lammveg · 24/04/2024 21:31

They reach 45 if going downhill. 35 on a slight incline though.

Verv · 24/04/2024 22:04

@Allfur Point on the doll to where I said I took any action.

Macaroni46 · 24/04/2024 22:15

Another thing that bugs me is when you're driving along with nothing behind you and a car pulls out in front of you and then proceeds to pootle along at a snail's pace! Why not just wait to pull out after I've gone past? It's almost as if they gain a perverse pleasure from pulling in front and then slowing me down 😡

Wooloohooloo · 24/04/2024 23:04

@VikingLady I have a tiny one litre and manage to merge onto motorways at over 50-60 iif traffic allows and I often manage to nip into the middle lane. I also use all three lanes at 70+. You're changing gears too soon- if you're speeding up, stay in lower gears.

It's a real issue round here too. I live on the edge of Glasgow - go to the end of my street and turn right and it's a 30 zone. Half a mile further on it turns into a 40, and at the net roundabout it's 60. On a clear day like today with good visibility and dry roads it's perfectly safe to drive 50-60 miles per hour. Yet the people who are driving at 30/40 leaving the city and heading for Loch Lomond or Aberfoyle do not adjust their driving, tootle along still doing 32 or 35 mph, totally oblivious to the people behind them.

And don't get me started about the people who slow to a crawl over the Queen's View to look at the scenery when there;s a massive fuck off car park where they are stop and look at the view as much as they like.

Oh my god driving past Loch Lomond is infuriating!!!!

And their close cousin, the speeding tailgater who overtakes, then slows down, once in front.

Good point 😂

Also you don't know the situation in the car
People could have items in the back they are being careful not to knock over.
They could be driving home someone very unwell and trying not to make them worse by playing speed yoyo

None of that is relevant to this thread, which is talking about the people who speed in restricted/residential areas and then don't accelerate when the speed limit increases.

Allfur · 25/04/2024 14:28

Trying to keep a consistent speed would be a reason and therefore relevant

Not exceeding the speed limit in restricted/built up areas wouldn't!!

RampantIvy · 25/04/2024 16:43

Do you drive @Allfur?

Teddleshon · 25/04/2024 17:46

And why would you want to maintain a consistent speed? On most 60mph rural roads this makes no sense.

I couldn't give a monkeys about the whys and wherefores of maintaining a consistent speed, I was merely opposing the poster who said it was irrelevant

Yes

TimeForTeaAndG · 25/04/2024 18:21

Somehow I highly doubt that many of the 40mph drivers are transporting ill passengers. They're just oblivious to their own inability to drive properly.

It's also possible to transport an ill person and slow down without causing them to feel worse, it's called taking your foot off the accelerator in plenty of time, using the clutch to slow down before gently applying the brake if needed. Speeding up, you don't slam the accelerator down...again, gently.

Teddleshon · 25/04/2024 18:26

That’s another whole subject - why do people apply the brake rather than just taking their foot off the accelerator?!

BIossomtoes · 25/04/2024 18:31

it's called taking your foot off the accelerator in plenty of time, using the clutch to slow down before gently applying the brake if needed.

That doesn’t work in an automatic, the only way to slow down is with the brake. No hybrids or EVs have clutches.

One of our cars is an automatic and you can decelerate by taking your foot off the brake. If you're driving at speed in 5th or 6th gear in a manual car, you don't decelerate quickly if you take the foot off the accelerator either. I'd say they're pretty similar. You only decelerate quickly in a manual if you're either already in a low gear or you purposely change down gear to slow (which you shouldn't do).

I got told off for that on another thread about tail gaiters, and told that it's dangerous because the car behind doesn't know you're slowing down and might hit you.

Teddleshon · 25/04/2024 20:48

@Carnewb well that’s the best argument I’ve heard yet in favour of taking your foot off the accelerator rather than braking!

Taking your foot off will slow an automatic. It’s the most fuel efficient way to drive.

BIossomtoes · 25/04/2024 20:51

Taking your foot off will slow an automatic.

Not fast enough.

Teddleshon · 25/04/2024 21:27

Fast enough for what? If you’re driving as you are meant to, I.e looking ahead, barring a sudden unforeseen danger it should be perfectly sufficient.
