People who drive 40 everywhere

Sorry this subject has probably been done to death but I let it really annoy me today so just want to get it off my chest 🤣
AIBU to be annoyed at people who drive 40mph everywhere? Following a car home today, I live in a small village of which the road to it varies between 30/60. It isn't a bad road, fairly straight on the 60 bits but I appreciate 60 isn't a target speed but it riles me up when said car is happy to speed in the 30 bits but not willing to go a little faster in the 60 bits.

Anyone else?

Is the dashed line at the end of the slip road a single line or a double line of dashes? There's a difference, that lots of people don't understand/notice the difference. On motorways it's a single dashed line as it is on some dual carriageways. At junctions on other dual carriageways it's a double dashed line which means "Give Way" so stopping is actually usually the right thing to do if the major road is busy when there's a doubled dashed line as that means give way just as it would at a normal road junction where you stop and wait for a space on the main road.

It’s a single dashed line. Honestly the road markings are irrelevant, it’s an absolute bastard of an entrance to a very fast dual carriageway, not helped because it’s not also an exit so there are no countdown markers to prompt traffic to move into the outside lane to allow traffic on. It’s a miracle there aren’t more accidents on that stretch.

I just realised going through my post and changing the autocorrects back to real English, I somehow deleted the bit that explained which sliproads I can't get up to speed on - it's just a couple that go uphill on the way to join! I'm fine on the rest, no problem at all. But my car simply does not accelerate uphill, regardless of gear (tested extensively since I drive that way every week).

I couldn't understand why people didn't believe me!

I don't understand the mindset if people who get so upset about saving a few minutes here and there

Really?
You don't understand why people on a tight schedule get upset when inconsiderate drivers cause them problems?

RampantIvy · 24/04/2024 15:00

That makes more sense @VikingLady.
I can't think of many fast roads that have a short uphill slip road to join them. That sounds like poor road planning.

I do a lot of motorway driving and all the uphill sliproads are long enough to build up a bit of speed on.

Unless you're performing emergency brain surgery, you could just chill out and accept that's the nature of driving on over crowded roads, getting so impatient and angry is dangerous

Or you're a courier, or a carer/district nurse, or you're delivering groceries or driving a taxi or an ambulance, or one of many, many road users whose employer sets the travel times you're allowed, between visits/drops.

Not sure how driving a taxi is affected, you either charge for time or distance

We're all busy, you make adjustments to your schedule to accommodate, no point in road raging

My DH s getting a bit apprehensive about driving so doesn't do it any more. But he sometimes says to me "it's not a race slow down a bit" this is when i'm doing about 50 in a 60 which I do if I know I'm not holding anyone up. If it's a good road and busy then I drive to the conditions.
I used to have a 2 litre Mondeo which had a lot of power and so much fun to drive I now have a Fiesta which is fine and nippy but I do miss the power of the bigger car.

I agree with you that getting angry when driving is dangerous. It's natural to get frustrated by bad driving, but actual anger has no place on the road.

That said, I find driving at a speed you fancy, not making effective progress, and then saying everyone else should chill out about it shows an arrogance that shouldn't be on the road either.

Just because I don't find slow drivers exacerbating, doesn't mean I am one, that's a bit of a lazy connection

Do you point out to him you are driving safely and capably? If DH told me to slow down when I was doing 10mph under the speed limit I'd not be impressed and he'd know it.

I love it when people say this.
Okay so I'll just leave work now to do the 15 minute journey to my sons school ready to collect him at 5pm. Afterall, can't predict that someone won't be crawling along the road at 5.
I'm sure my employer won't mind.

I love it when people build their lives around cars and then complain about it, not everyone drives to work or school etc

Who said they did?

Okay, do you do anything that has a start or finish time? Kids in school? A job? What do you use to get from A-B?
Because the same frustrations that drivers feel can be experienced by walkers, joggers, cyclists, public transport users etc.

And if you’re driving an ambulance you stick your blues and twos on.

Cyclists and pedestrians aren't affected by traffic jams

Caerulea · 24/04/2024 16:10

Get the feeling there's a lot of pp from cornwall on this thread lol. It's an absolute shitshow here for driving in the holidays. I think the logic on the speed is 'if I go 40 in this 60 then I save that extra 20mph to go 40 in the 20'. There must be some kind of bonus thing for driving in the middle of the road & stopping at all oncoming traffic too.

My favourite passtime is going infuriatingly slow in front of agressive speeders through villages. I can go soooooo slooooooow. Then I hit the 60 road & boot it. Petty but satisfying. I'm a stickler for limits in little villages and around houses etc. Other limits not so much 😬

MohairTortoise · 24/04/2024 16:10

I tend to drive at 50mph on the 60 road where I am, because there's deer signs at intervals on this stretch of road and there are regularly deer or muntjac leaping into the road.
When I say regularly, there's not a week goes by without either a deer or muntjac leaping out of the bushes, and there is always a dead one at the edge of the road. This is in daylight hours, I tend not to drive in the dark unless it can't be avoided.
Other drivers are welcome to overtake me if they wish, and they do, usually at much more than 60.

No but they very easily can be affected by other delays including slow cyclists and pedestrians. Christ you could be affected by a herd of sheep or a mobility scooter that you can't pass. There could be any number of reasons you're delayed due to other people (and animals) that you couldn't have foreseen and you can't do anything about. Is it helpful when people suggest that you should just leave earlier?

Unfortunately 'we' didn't build our lives around rigid start and finish times for things. 'We' also didn't build our towns or our cities. 'We' don't often get to choose where we live or where we work.

Don't you get stressed if you rely on a bus and train to get to work or school etc., and you get to the stop and station to find it cancelled or delayed meaning you're late??

On a bike, if there us a blockage in the road, you get off bike and walk around it. Never late.

This has rarely happened but if it did, I wouldn't stress as there is very little I can do about it and whats the point moaning about it

MissBedelia · 24/04/2024 16:31

Drives me crazy. Happens a lot round where I live.

They also often slow down on corners on a 60 limit road- this cannot be necessary 🤯

clairelouwho · 24/04/2024 16:35

Allfur · 23/04/2024 20:28

Your schedule is your schedule, nothing to do with other road users

If people don't feel confident driving at or near the speed limit in normal conditions, they shouldn't be driving or they should stick to roads that are more in keeping with the speeds they're comfortable doing.

If someone is doing 40 in a 60 on their driving test, guess what? They'd fail it. For good reason.

It's clear you're one of those drivers we're talking about.

You can't always. And you can't always know if you will or won't encounter a blockage that you cannot walk around. Therefore, whatever next appointment or time sensitive thing you have to attend, you should probably set off now to be on the safe side.
