Sick and tired of inconsiderate neighbours

Hi everyone. It's just scream out of my heart.. I can't understand why people can be so careless and selfish. Me, my husband and our little daughter always have been nice neighbours and never had any issues with other people. Basically since we moved to ground floor apartment our life became a hell. It was our first official place which we worked hard for to get mortgage and move in... Don't know where to start.. This building allow pets with written permission, but it is not soundproofed at all for this... Leasehold states that there should not be any disturbing, noise for other residents if you have cat or dog... But the reality is different. Basically our neighbours used to have dog and a cat, it was a big issue for us, as we have little child, who goes to sleep early and pets running for hours above us it's just mad even if you don't have children ... We were talking nicely to our neighbours and tried to soundproof, paid for installing carpets in their flat and it became more or less tolerable... But sadly their puppy died and they decided to take another puppy, another kitten. I couldn't believe that they did it after knowing we can hear everything.... So 3 pets above us, waking us up in random hours nevermind heavy footsteps. The girl upstairs works in the police and doesn't seem to care less as they just don't care like no rules apply to her.. It's so awful the way people are.So called directors appointed by management company all have dogs themselves and live one above another and they are mother and daughter, and one of them is dog walker looking after our neighbours pets, so feels so corrupted. We felt unwanted for a long time till I accidentally talked to another neighbour who is also in shock how management company runs this place as she had to live under two bulldogs from top floor, and she had to change bedroom and she is on her 80s!!had to throw ball to ceiling to get some peace ... We had to do that too, when after 3 hours our neighbours completely ruined our Saturday evening and had a cheak to bang back..... I love dogs and cats, but could never behave like that knowing that I can upset people downstairs. They allow pets to play for hours... I'm so frustrated
. And yes we are moving because of it.
I guess I just want support

and is your child silent? Does your child move around the flat? Probably just as noisy as a cat!

I wouldn’t like to live surrounded by animals in flats either tbh, but I love having dogs so I think it’s nice that people can have pets. Your neighbours aren’t the careless, selfish, inconsiderate people you are describing them to be, they are just people who can’t afford houses but want to have pets, so they’re following the rules of the building they live in.

But even when they wake you up all the time, when it's sunny day, the dog running inside instead of taking for a walk?
And they decided to have extra 2 pets after knowing issues?.. I can't understand... Rules are not clear to be fair with this building, just anarchy really

We are on ground floor, we don't disturb anyone

You paid for their carpet? Am I understanding that correctly?
Cats are not generally noisy.

We paid yes, for bedrooms and living room. Unfortunately we hear them running, but it's more about dog running. Cats are not running as often, but if they do, they will wake up everyone at night

Oh get a grip. People live in flats by the railway lines in London and have dc too. They learn to sleep through noises and a cat jumping would not be louder than a train or even a car going by.

I find it very hard to believe that the soundproofing is only bad one way. I am sure they will hear you and your household appliances, even if it’s in a different way to how they disturb you. It’s quite likely they care less about their noise because they consider you aren’t quiet either.

I mean I have two cats that I got as kittens. They did used to race around a bit but cats are pretty light footed and they run about in short bursts and sleep a lot. I can't imagine any cat tearing about the house for 3 hours! I admit I can hear my cats through the ceiling if they are going mad upstairs, but not when they are just walking. But I don't have any kind of insulation.

They have very active young dog and 2 cats. Dog running a lot and cats are occasionally. Can hear it all

Is their dog called Clifford?

FlissyPaps · 22/04/2024 19:42

Sorry OP, but this is part and parcel of living in a ground floor flat, or any flat that isn’t on the top floor. You’re going to hear noise from above.

Just because they have pets doesn’t make them ‘inconsiderate’. They already agreed to change their carpets and accepted your generous offer, so it sounds like they are actually considerate people.

It sounds like you’ve worked hard for your home but if you can’t cope with the sound of their pets walking around then you’re going to have to move to a top floor flat or house.

I understand about the cat. My DD lives in a ground floor flat and upstairs have a cat and it sounds like it's permanently leaping from one chair to another with hobnail boots on.
We know it's the cat because it does it when the owner is out. People are selfish inconsiderate arseholes. The neighbours like to shower at 3am while listening to music.

Thank you so much. By reading people comments I got impression they just don't get it, unless you live in similar situation. You do understand me because your DD lives in ground floor... Imagine we have 3 pets, including dog plus these people...

Cats are mostly silent like Ninjas… I can only hear my cat by the bell on his collar

Maria1234567 · 22/04/2024 19:50

tabulahrasa · 22/04/2024 19:12

I thought they were going to be barking or howling or something

But you’re complaining about them moving?

The sound is worse than barking, it's louder like noise is in our own flat. We can't have romantic night with husband. And the dog can run for hours and play, it's not even a year old puppy

My cat makes the most noise out of all of us. She seemingly cant do anything quietly. She doesn't appear to have the shock absorbers many cats do and when she jumps down off something you hear a massive thump.
Not to mention she seems to turn into an elephant on the staircase.

What I was trying to say, that loads of noise could be avoided if they were considered, the leasehold says noise shouldn't disturb anyone, why couldn't they have just one pet for now. It's only small flat to have all those animals. And we are totally fine with noise, as we only lived in flats, not spoilt or anything, but when it's evening and throw the balls to your dog across the flat, it's just cruel to people downstairs. And they can't be bothered to walk in this situation

I think people do understand OP. It's just that they aren't doing anything wrong -you unfortunately live in a flat with terrible soundproofing. Virtually non existent by the sounds of it. That's the issue, not your neighbours. I assume they aren't having parties all night? I'm definitely sympathetic as it's horrible to live with noise -but unless you very carefully pick the flat it's common. Build standards for conversions are often terrible. Sounds like you are moving soon so that's good.

Motnight · 22/04/2024 19:31

Op in all seriousness what do you think is the reasonable thing for your neighbours to do?

Sounds like the sound proofing is awful.

Do they hear you do you think?

Soundproofing is really bad, but for impact noise mainly. Airborne noise you can't hear. They don't hear us, unless if daughter would cry. But it's very rarely for 2 minutes and they said they don't hear us much. They are above us, so no any impact noise for them

Bad soundproofing and due their decisions to play with them inside for hours.... Yes we paid.. Because we want to be nice neighbours

Thank you, no parties at night, but they wake us up regularly. I believe if they at least had one pet, situation would be a lot better with the noise... I guess we were lucky before with flats. We used to hear 'normal' living noise, but what's now is shocking. No peace in this place.. We are hopefully moving soon❤️

That's insane, cats are big now since last summer and you can hear them really badly when they run. Especially on laminate... Our neighbours went on Easter weekend away and left cats and 2 out of 3 nights they were waking us up by running across the flat at 4am.... They usually close the doors to bedroom as we asked them... But clearly didn't bother when they were away

Are they wearing tap shoes?

daliesque · 22/04/2024 20:13

Are you sure it's a dog and cat they have and not a herd of elephants?

You are being ridiculous. Unless barking at all hours it comes under normal everyday life noise. I've had dogs all my life and yet to have one that would make enough noise just moving around it's home to disturb neighbours.

I can guarantee your kid disturbs them more.

Please understand, I'm not classing myself sensitive, to live by train is better than that as its outside noise, and it's like a white noise. You get used to it. People talk about cats in this thread a lot, but forgetting I said that it's more about dog running nonstop, throwing ball etc plus cats!! In this place there is no privacy.. I lived in the flat where at night there were police sirens regularly and it was a lot better. I guess it's hard to understand unless you heard what we hear for 2 years

daliesque · 22/04/2024 20:18

Ahh you're one of those parents.

KittyCollar · 22/04/2024 18:51

I get it about noisy neighbours trust me, but how can you hear a kitten?

I had two kittens who sounded like baby elephants stampeding up and down the stairs.

Don't kid yourself, cats can be heavy footed when they want to be.

OP, people are inconsiderate fu**ers regardless of where they work.
