Dulcolax mistake

DogsBehavingWrongly · 21/04/2024 22:32

Constipated for over a week. I took two dulcolax on Friday night as recommended by a friend who suffers chronic constipation. Saturday - no result - just wind and bloating. So last night I took two more.

This morning - normal poo at 8:30ish. By 10am I was suffering with terrible non stop diarrhoea. It’s literally been going on all day - everything I eat goes right through me.

I fly tomorrow. I’m so scared this is going to carry on into tomorrow?! Anyone have any experience of it? (I’m not asking for poo stories, just experiences of when the effects wear off!!)

Not me, but a friend. Think it took about 16 hours for the last dose to wear off and drinking shedloads of water and eating toast helped slow things down considerably. In her case she misread the label, but I imagine the biological effects would be the same. Fingers crossed for you!

I had similar with the liquid version. Twice! I didn't double dose though! First time I took the recommended 10ml. Second time I took 5ml but had no effect. So the next time I needed it I took 7.5mls for it to be just as bad as the 10ml dose (there was well over a week between each dose!). Anyway, it gave me terrible, uncontrolable runs and abdo pain!!! For me it subsided within about 12 hrs. I have now decided to just stick to senna if I get bunged up again! Not that it happens often, but the meds I was on at the time were known for causing constipation!

I imagine hy tomorrow or will have settled. What time is your flight?

Doubtisthemaster · 21/04/2024 22:46

If you can get to a pharmacy buy some cocodomol as not only will it help with any abdo pain from the laxative, it will also help to slow down the diarrhea since codeine causes constipation. I've taken dulcilax several times and find those helps when it's having too much of an effect. They can't be taken with paracetamol though because they contain it already.

ItsallIeverwanted · 21/04/2024 22:49

I am never taking it again for this reason! Nothing happens, nothing happens, then too much happens! I ended up taking a stopping up remedy as I had to go to work later that day, so it was all ridiculous. It will settle within the day though, hopefully.

I second this OP and avoid fruit and anything containing Vitamin C until you’re safely off the plane.

You’re not the first! The half life is supposed to be 16 hours so I think you should be ok tomorrow. Drink plenty of water!

I’d echo HeirofSlytherin if you’re ever constipated again. The last time I was I took a senna tablet and it worked very quickly! The effects didn’t last long. It’s rare for me but when I have been I find eating liquorice helps.

Try and have a rehydration powder (eg Dioralyte) if you can before you fly.

Take some loperamide.

ColitisSucks · 21/04/2024 22:54

I used to have a stoma, so had to manage.. Um..consistency through diet as much as possible.

Marshmallows are surprisingly effective if you eat a lot - especially the massive ones in a big bag from b&m.

Also eggs and bananas, but marshmallows are more fun!

spiderlight · 21/04/2024 22:57

Thank you, @ColitisSucks , from another colitis sufferer. That is very useful to know!

Dulcolax are the work of the devil, ds once gave me 2 when I was bunged up, I thought I was going to die from the pain, I would rather have carried on being bunged up.

Agree, and there are so many reviews online which say the same. Brutal stuff.
