To ask for advice - trying to give a syringe dose from a medicine bottle?

Hi all, posting for traffic, as I’d be grateful for advice please.

I need to give medication via a syringe to a cat I’m looking after. It’s just a bit tricky to work out how to actually get the medicine from the bottle into the syringe.

I’ve tried a few times to get the medicine from the bottle to the syringe, but nothing has worked so far (turning the bottle upside down, squeezing it as much as I can - but doesn’t do much good as it’s pretty solid glass - and shaking it before I open).

I’ve taken a few photos of the bottle, and what it looks with the syringe in it, in case that helps.

Can anyone advise please? Thanks!

Can you take the plastic cap off and stick the syringe into the bottle

Stripeysocks1981 · 21/04/2024 09:40

tale syringe out of bottle. Push plunger down. Put syringe back in bottle. Tip bottle upside down and pull back the plunger.

MultiplaLight · 21/04/2024 09:40

Push the plunger all the way up. Put the syringe in the bottle. Turn the bottle upside down. Pull the plunger out and the air pressure should draw the liquid out.

Try injecting the volume of air that you wish to get back as meditation.
then hold the bottle upside down and with luck it will come on its own or at least with little resistance.

Is there definitely meditation left in the bottle? It’s not usually at all difficult. I thought you were asking for advice on getting it into the cat which can certainly be tricky 😊

I’ve tried to a few time, working my fingers around the cap to try and peel it off, but it seems very stuck in place. At the moment, there’s a small piercing in the plastic cap, so I think there must be a way (I hope!) to get the medicine through that.

Are you at starting with the syringe in the position you have it in pic?
You need to start with the plunger down. Put the end of syringe in hole and then pulling the plunger should draw the liquid out the bottle.
Apologies if you have been doing that. If that's not working then there is something wrong with either the opening in the bottle or in the syringe

Push the plunger right out as if you were pushing all the liquid out. Put the syringe on the bottle, turn it upside down and then draw the plunger back out to the desired level.

Why do you need to get the lid off. Just start with the closed syringe, put in lid, turn upside down, pull back on syringe to the right dose. Have you ever used Calpol?

GoawaySunrise · 21/04/2024 09:51

Push plunger all the way in and barely push the needle into the bottle. Turn bottle upside down, pull plunger back. I would also try a new syringe if no luck. If you're pushing the needle in too far it will draw in whatever air is in the bottle and sort of lock on itself

ComingUpTrumps · 21/04/2024 09:53

Thanks so much for your advice, everyone.

I’ve now managed to push the syringe down all the way into the bottle, which I guess is progress!

I’ve checked and there is definitely medication still in the bottle, as I can hear it splash around in the bottle if I shake it.

The only issue is that I can’t get any medication into the syringe - even by pushing the syringe all the way into the bottle and then turning the bottle upside down, to get the liquid to drip down into the syringe.

I've attached some pics to help!

  1. Start with the plunger all the way in.
  2. Insert the syringe into the hole in the lid, and turn the whole thing upside down.
  3. Pull the plunger to the desired quantity. If there's big air bubbles in it, just push it up again and try again.

I would try injecting air into the bottle pull the plunger back then insert then depress plunger then turn bottle upside down with syringe still in and draw up how much you need
