To think that Landlords have a bad name.

NC for this.

Is it just me or are all landlords frowned upon a MN.

We own and rent out 3 properties all our properties are rented out to young families, just under market rate, we allow them to decorate their homes how they like, and if there is any issues or problems they just call us and we sort it out ASAP.

I know that there is some terrible landlords out there, that should be dealt with but there are thousands of other that are decent that follow all the laws and their tenants are very happy.

To you its "just an asset" to someone else it could be a permanent home

Exactly. Someone's unobtainable dream home is "just an asset". Hardworking people that just a couple of generations ago would have almost certainly owned their own home but now can't.
The reason? People like this hoarding them and calling them "just an asset".

But it's OK! Because she will allow them to paint it!!

Causewerethespecialtwo · 20/04/2024 18:37

You will only find negative stories of Landlords on Mumsnet because people with great and average Landlords have no reason to make posts.

I own a BTL and if my tenants made a post I think it would say:
“My Landlord is nice, they haven’t put my rent up for 6 years, keeping it well below average in the area. They fix stuff as soon as I report it. They recently said yes when I asked if it was possible for me to get a dog. And they even send me a bottle of champagne every Christmas.”

I doubt it would get any comments!

NO.

I am not after being made to feel good, I am saying that people rent for all sort of reasons and most are happy to rent, yet posters have come on here to just be nasty.

Why do you read some of the responses, so anyone that cant afford a mortgage should be homeless, landlords provide a service, where we live its 10 years on a waiting list for social housing.

That's bollocks. Most people are NOT happy to rent, they do it because they have no choice. I bet you anything that if they were able to own a home, they would prefer that.

TinyYellow · 20/04/2024 18:36

Shelter is a necessity. Living in a property of your choice in a location of your choice is not a necessity. Not all rental properties are places where a low wage couple with children expect to live.

How far do you want to take the argument about making profit out of necessity? I’m assuming it doesn’t apply to food, clothing or transportation?

Actually I have an issue with the huge profits made on food and public transport (less profits there admittedly but not enough investment)

Clothing I am more on the fence with because there are a lot of options at different price points and because second hand is an option in a way that it isn't for food etc

I would prefer the vast majority of rental properties to be social housing where money made is reinvested in the properties and student housing to be rent controlled bevause students are starting not not be able to go to some universities because rent is as much as or more than the loan they get

It didn’t take long to get to “I’m providing a service!” did it?!

You are hoarding and making an asset out of a finite resource which should be available at an affordable price to all. You don’t get praise for that.

PeaceOnThePorch · 20/04/2024 18:41

People lose their minds on here about landlords. At the end of the day, everyone tries to make money to pay the bills and most things could be said to exploit someone I suppose.

We have properties we rent out, it’s allowed. If people don’t like it, tough. Our properties are lovely and well maintained and tenants pay for that. It’s not illegal, I don’t think it’s immoral although some people do. I can live with that. I bet I think some things others do is immoral. That’s life.

FuckOffTom · 20/04/2024 18:41

What would everyone have the OP do absolve her of her sins?
Should she immediately give all of her tenants notice to leave and sell the houses for what she paid for them? What if her tenants liked renting and living in those properties? Would you have her gift the houses to them, perhaps? Are you all so altruistic? I doubt it.

And also pretending that everyone who wants to buy a home can’t do so purely because of landlords is just not true. It’s a complex situation with multiple factors involved. It’s not as simple as ‘greedy landlords’

You don't provide a service. You're hoarding homes as "assets". It's YOU that's making it so people have to rent.

Do you really think your tenants are going fo tell you how they actually feel while there's a housing crisis on and landlords have their pick? They're going to lick your ass. Doesn't mean they like you. Certainly doesn't mean they like renting.

Londonrach1 · 20/04/2024 18:43

We tried to buy a house, our home to be but a landlord has bought lots in the area. Estate agent dealt with them not us. We offered the same. The house came up rent. Broke our heart and we left the area...I worked for the NHS so 20 patients a day didn't get an appointment...they never refilled my job. Husband was similar. We got lucky next time as seller wanted to avoid a landlord.

I hope you can live with yourself. I feel sorry for you but you lucky as you don't know the pain you give...

LordPercyPercy · 20/04/2024 18:44

There are plenty of reasons why people might want to rent - students, working on a contract in an area or just wanting to get a feel for a new area, gap between purchases etc. I don't think the removal of all rental stock would be helpful.

I do think it's not ideal for a family who wants a stable long-term home though.

What the answer is and how you balance those two factors, I am not sure. I guess more affordable homes or social housing for the latter so that rental housing stock can be utilised by the former group.

underscorer · 20/04/2024 18:45

You do it because it makes you money that you don't work for. Stop trying to pretend that you're altruistic. People can't afford to buy partly because "investors" hoover up so much of the housing stock.

minthybobs · 20/04/2024 18:46

I don’t get the idea that if landlords just sold up then the struggling tenants would buy the houses- clearly they can’t afford it otherwise they would have bought one wouldn’t they? I mean DOH!

Besides whenever home ownership comes up on here there are loads of people saying “NOT everyone wants to buy- I like renting” so which is it?!

I rented out my nans house after she passed- never realised that meant I was selfish and horrible 😂🤣of course I am sure all the critics in this thread would have just gifted it to a random stranger for a pound 😂

MartinsSpareCalculator · 20/04/2024 18:46

This is wild. Are mortgage providers scum because they make profit from people's need for housing?

underscorer · 20/04/2024 18:46

"An asset" - sickening. It's someone's home.

RPH2023 · 20/04/2024 18:46

I’m a tenant who has seen both sides.

Old landlord who was horrendous and would not answer calls from letting agents to fix things including when boiler broke and we had no heating. In the end the letting agents went ahead with installing new boiler. Landlord had over 40 properties. We had holes in external walls and ended up with rat problems - landlord refused to pay for pest control so letting agents paid as the issue was due to structural defects and not us as tenants.

OTOH now rent from a wonderful landlord who fixes issues promptly, looks after the property and cares about us. She bought my children Easter eggs and gave them money for Christmas. We appreciate her and she appreciates that we are good tenants.
Not all landlords are scum and not all tenants are bad.

Not bollocks at all, what about someone who has relocated for work on an 18 month contract, those that have left an abusive relationship.

Some people can not get a mortgage because of a bad credit score.

And not being able to get a mortgage due to a bad credit score does not mean they are happy to rent! In that scenario they're renting because they have no choice, as I stated!

There’s been twice where I had to rent

once on a long term secondment with work

and another time a relationship that was going nowhere saddling ourselves with a house would of been a disaster

we needed LL

ManchesterBeatrice · 20/04/2024 18:50

@Arewe29 Yes this is what I wonder. I own my own home but have used rented properties when needed.

Yeah OP - you are personally responsible for the high house prices and the fact that some people can’t buy homes 🤦‍♀️

So the other 75% of owner occupiers are not the cause.
