To be a bit annoyed at Supply Teacher not having to do any planning?

ioryou · 20/04/2024 15:14

I am a Year 4 teacher in a 2 form entry primary school, my year group teacher left at Easter for a job in another school. Therefore, we have a long term supply in until the end of the school year and the school are advertising for a position with a September start. With my previous colleague we shared the planning between us, however I have been told by SLT that I will have to do all planning by myself as the supply only agreed to do the role if she was not required to do the planning. Supply also has been told she will not be subject to book scrutinies and will not need to attend staff meetings after school or INSET days.

AIBU to be a bit annoyed at having to all the planning now? I thought long term supply had the responsibility of planning?

Can they ask you to do that?

I think it would be reasonable to object.

CormorantStrikesBack · 20/04/2024 15:22

Go off with stress due to increased workload?

Santasbigredbobblehat · 20/04/2024 15:23

That seems odd. I’m a long term supply and I do the planning. Single form school, but still. I don’t do staff meetings as I finish early (EY) or INSET (they’d have to pay me).

Justwanttocomment · 20/04/2024 15:24

If you weren’t in a two from entry then you’d have to do all your own planning?

Shaketherombooga · 20/04/2024 15:24

What if that supply leaves tomorrow or the next day or the next week? To be replaced by another supply? Then another?
How can you not see that it’s better for the children to have one teacher planning when the 2nd may not be around long, doesn’t know them very well, doesn’t know the school?

AMBOG · 20/04/2024 15:24

Supply teachers are often poorly payed. Depending on which agency they work for and don’t get payed enough to warrant the extra hours that planning takes.

Bramshott · 20/04/2024 15:25

I suspect SLT had to agree this to persuade the supply teacher to take the role.

ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat · 20/04/2024 15:25

Can you ask for extra PPA time or support from SLT?

YABU to be annoyed AT the supply teacher though. They negotiated conditions that would benefit them.

Everydayimhuffling · 20/04/2024 15:25

They can do that because it's so hard to get supply. Your school should be doing more to support you though. I would be asking for an extra hour free at least, and ideally someone else to plan parts of it. It shouldn't all fall to you with no acknowledgement of the huge extra workload. When we've had similar in my school the planning has been split (although I know that's easier to do in secondary where I am)

idontlikealdi · 20/04/2024 15:25

Supply don't do planning IME.

Spirallingdownwards · 20/04/2024 15:26

Isn't that the perk of being supply with no job security, pension etc. If you were a one form entry you would be doing the planning for the one form. So it's the same really save that you are sharing with in essence a temp.

Do you really want to complain and potentially give yourself a reputation as being difficult and unhelpful for the sake of one term?

Podgedodge · 20/04/2024 15:27

Check with your union.

Nannyogg134 · 20/04/2024 15:27

I understand why you're annoyed, but this is the reality of the role. I'm in secondary and had to plan for a different humanities subject to support a long term supply.

ellesbellesxxx · 20/04/2024 15:28

Yanbu to be annoyed at the situation. I always had to plan when on long term supply.

I like the idea of asking for extra PPA time though as a solution

CommentNow · 20/04/2024 15:28

School think you'll do it and are hedging their bets that you will grumble, stay and do it whereas supply teacher will just turn down job. They think they need her more than you at the moment. .

I'd do as someone else said- tell school you cant do it unless something else is taken off your plate. If they refuse I'd go off with stress until September or until they make alternative arrangements.

KTheGrey · 20/04/2024 15:29

Supply teachers don't have the generous pension provision and usually aren't paid to scale. So they don't do the extra.

wafflesmgee · 20/04/2024 15:29

YaBU because you are paid more than the supply, you can pay into your pension, they cannot as supply, also you will be paid over the summer and they will not.

I teach in a single form entry school so have to do all my own planning, but am on the same pay scales nationally as those who work in 2,3,4 entry schools, so rather than complaining try flipping it and realise how lucky you have been up to now.

They can't force the supply to be responsible for book scrutinies because then they'd have to pay them properly as a proper teacher.

The only grey area is PPA, are they paid for this? If so, you could argue they should do planning for, say, one subject out of the 9

Hankunamatata · 20/04/2024 15:30

Annoying but aren't you planning for your own class anyway?

ArchesOfsunflowers · 20/04/2024 15:30

Yeah, I’ve said this as supply.
They want to pay me less, I’m not really up for doing the job as if I was employed for another 8-10k.
Also frankly, every day there’s flexible day to day supply on offer. Easier than getting caught up in planning, parents evenings etc for the same money!
When I was a deputy headteacher I once tried 19 agencies to find a long time supply this Time of year!

ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat · 20/04/2024 15:25

YABU to be annoyed AT the supply teacher though. They negotiated conditions that would benefit them.

When I did supply I didn't negotiate conditions, I was told them by my agency and had no say.

HowdidImanagetohavetwoaccountaandthenloseboth · 20/04/2024 15:30

Depends what they get paid . If it is salary / 195 days, then they should be planning . If though it’s a lesser figure ( sometimes county wide figure) which is less than this , then they shouldn’t have to plan Personally for a longer term job I would prefer the higher rate and to plan for the class .

Cornishmaiden · 20/04/2024 15:34

I work as a long term supply but I am given PPA time to plan the Foundation subjects and the permanent teacher plans Maths and English. I asked for an enhanced rate from my agency to include marking at the end of the day. I would not have taken the job without these adjustments as the supply pay rate is nowhere near my UPS rate.
In your position I would be asking for extra PPA.

viques · 20/04/2024 15:35

What is going to happen with end of year reports?

Did you teach Y4 last year? In most schools the schemes of work to be covered don’t change much if the curriculum for each year group has been organised. I would be digging out the plans for last years summer term and re using those heavily.

I do agree that you should ask for some extra time out of class to compensate for the extra work.

Nospecialcharactersplease · 20/04/2024 15:39

CormorantStrikesBack · 20/04/2024 15:22

Go off with stress due to increased workload?

There’s always one.

ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat · 20/04/2024 15:39

@wafflesmgee depends how desperate the school are and what options they have.

It also depends if the supply was offered paid PPA time and they declined saying they won't do any planning at all, or the school just expects OP to do it and passing the buck.
