Cash - am I out of touch?

AIBU thinking I should still be able to use cash?

I accept that most places, and people, find it easier using cards but shouldn’t you still be able to use cash occasionally?

Went out for lunch the other day. The bill came to over £100 but as it was something planned, I had cash. The pub said whilst they can take cash, they don’t give change. Since when was this a thing.

At work, when people get married/have babies/leave etc, we do a collection. You always used to stick your contribution in a pot or envelope but now you have to do it online. Not everyone gives now because it’s obvious how much they’ve contributed.

AINBU, that I should still occasionally be able to use cash or AIBU cash has had its day.

Personally I havent used cash for .... well aslong as I can remember!.... but the pub not giving change is a wierd one. The only money I have is a spare £1 for the shopping trolley.

Willmafrockfit · 20/04/2024 09:08

local greengrocer is cash only if under £5, although they have now changed it to £3

i struggled so spend cash when visiting relatives in bristol

otoh in america they are very much in to cash

Willmafrockfit · 20/04/2024 09:09

there are people who support using cash
be one of them op!
that is ridiculous that they dont give change

NigelHarmansNewWife · 20/04/2024 09:10

I voted YANBU as they should have made this clear before you ordered anything.

Sugarcoatedalmonds · 20/04/2024 09:11

I only use cash for my cleaner/driving instructor and toddler playgroups! Its such a faff I would much prefer bank transfer!

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 20/04/2024 09:12

They can't give change?
What a cheek.
I'd vote with my feet and not return.
Card payment has it's place but so does cash.

Viviennemary · 20/04/2024 09:14

Absolutely bonkers a pub not giving change. I can understand it on buses where time is a factor but not shops and pubs. But I use my card a lot more for quite small purchases.

Redshoeblueshoe · 20/04/2024 09:14

I use cash regularly, I also give it as birthday presents - nobody has reused it so far.

whiteroseredrose · 20/04/2024 09:14

I've seen it a lot. My work cafe doesn't take cash which was a bit of an issue when the systems went down.

However handling cash is a big issue. I worked in a bank and local businesses had to keep coming in for cash in the morning and deposit it again at night. Time consuming and they got charged for it.

MojoMoon · 20/04/2024 09:15

Being cashless is a lot easier and safer for many businesses.

The number of robberies/burglaries of retail/pub/hospitality venues has plummeted because they used to have tens of thousands of pounds in cash in them at the end of a Sat night and now they don't.

Same as taxi drivers - robbing a taxi driver late in a Sat night used to net you a few hundred quid in cash at least and now if they are card only, you'll get nothing.

Harder for staff to skim the takings as well.

bananaboats · 20/04/2024 09:16

I've never heard of somewhere not giving change before but I do think most places want to encourage card payments now so that is probably why. I personally prefer to pay by card & actually can't remember the last time I lifted out physical cash from a cash machine!

Jenry · 20/04/2024 09:17

YANBU. For some people especially vulnerable people cash is their only option

Createausername1970 · 20/04/2024 09:18

I like cash. I used to take out the cash I needed for the week. Once it was gone, it was gone. I controlled my supermarket spending much better with cash. When cash went out of favour during COVID, my spending went up.

It's obviously quite possible to stick to a budget with card, but it is easier with cash.

I am thinking about going back to cash more often.

TheLurpackYears · 20/04/2024 09:20

I regularly get paid in cash and then spend it.
In a different role the company I work for doesn't accept cash payment.

PuttingDownRoots · 20/04/2024 09:24

I used to get my beer budget out in cash before a night out, emergency tenner stashed for taxi home. Pub was somewhere I wanted to use cash!

Berlinlover · 20/04/2024 09:25

I refuse to give my business to anywhere that doesn’t accept cash.

ToffeePennie · 20/04/2024 09:28

I mostly get paid in Cash! So for me cash will always be king.
otherwise I have to go to the bank, and my only local one involves a trip to the shopping centre but it’s only open Tuesday-Friday 10-4, so when I’m usually at work. There are no other sensible options (unless I drive for over 2 hours to my next branch) so cash is ALWAYS important.
if I go somewhere that doesn’t take cash I’m horrid and quite often I just dump what I’ve picked up, leave it where it is and go somewhere else. I will not shop anywhere that doesn’t take cash!

Anewuser · 20/04/2024 09:32

I’m glad I’m not quite the dinosaur I thought then.

It’s not that I’d only use cash. I’m very happy buying online and love PayPal, and I’m used to waving my phone at the contact point in the supermarket.

I think it makes sense, as PPs say, establishments/taxis not carrying cash to prevent robberies but I do think people should still have choice.

This happened to me last year with the DC. Tried telling me no change and pretty rude about it. Had a standoff with the restaurant manager and after I said fine, we're going now so you'll have to get the police to sort it out they miraculously found the change 🙄 and were put out that I told them to remove the service charge 😂😂

bridgetreilly · 20/04/2024 09:41

Since when = since Covid.

Businesses should make it clear upfront, and many do. But life without cash is a lot easier for most businesses.

Frugalfruit · 20/04/2024 09:42

YANBU

I keep a sum of cash in the house for an emergency but I don't spend cash at all in shops. I think it is very important for people to keep using cash because it keeps the door open for cash use in the future but I'm scared to do it in case people think I'm a criminal. I think since covid using cash gives people the impression you are guilty of wrongdoing. I haven't used a cash machine for years and I had to get my emergency sum of cash changed at the bank because the old notes had been withdrawn.

It's arguable that I shouldn't have kept any cash in the house as there is little point. Our nearest shops close when the card systems go down so they wouldn't take cash. If there was no power shops can't scan the items or open the tills so cash would be useless then too.

I have never had a window cleaner or a cleaner but I would think most people would still pay cash for things like that.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist but abandoning cash seems like the wrong road to go down. There has already been a change in attitude to cash and I wonder how this has come about.

Octavia64 · 20/04/2024 09:49

Nearly everyone went cashless during Covid and most businesses found it easier. So lots didn't go back.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 20/04/2024 09:50

Window cleaner, bin cleaner etc, all paid online.

I even set up a Revolut at work to collect the tea fund now. Easier, safer and no one has cash anyway. Plus it covers me when you get someone saying, I'm sure I already paid. Always the same person btw, but now I can just show them.

I usually have a few coins and an emergency tenner on me, but everything is via my phone now.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 20/04/2024 09:53

As a business selling cars we turn away customers with cash and they have to go deposit in a bank. It costs us £1.50 per £100 to put it in the bank!! So some businesses have very good reasons to not accept cash.

You can also pay in cash to bank accounts at post offices.
