Cash - am I out of touch?

AIBU thinking I should still be able to use cash?

I accept that most places, and people, find it easier using cards but shouldn’t you still be able to use cash occasionally?

Went out for lunch the other day. The bill came to over £100 but as it was something planned, I had cash. The pub said whilst they can take cash, they don’t give change. Since when was this a thing.

At work, when people get married/have babies/leave etc, we do a collection. You always used to stick your contribution in a pot or envelope but now you have to do it online. Not everyone gives now because it’s obvious how much they’ve contributed.

AINBU, that I should still occasionally be able to use cash or AIBU cash has had its day.

Sainsburys and large supermarkets/fuel stations take cash .However all the pubs/Restaurants here, will only accept Card payments . Most have a sign up stating this .However I went to a lounge type cafe, and a chap had a bag of coins! To my surprise they accepted it!

YANBU

I keep a sum of cash in the house for an emergency but I don't spend cash at all in shops. I think it is very important for people to keep using cash because it keeps the door open for cash use in the future but I'm scared to do it in case people think I'm a criminal. I think since covid using cash gives people the impression you are guilty of wrongdoing. I haven't used a cash machine for years and I had to get my emergency sum of cash changed at the bank because the old notes had been withdrawn.

It's arguable that I shouldn't have kept any cash in the house as there is little point. Our nearest shops close when the card systems go down so they wouldn't take cash. If there was no power shops can't scan the items or open the tills so cash would be useless then too.

I have never had a window cleaner or a cleaner but I would think most people would still pay cash for things like that.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist but abandoning cash seems like the wrong road to go down. There has already been a change in attitude to cash and I wonder how this has come about.

“I keep a sum of cash in the house for an emergency but I don't spend cash at all in shops. I think it is very important for people to keep using cash because it keeps the door open for cash use in the future but I'm scared to do it in case people think I'm a criminal.”

So you keep cash and don’t spend it at all in shops but you also think it’s very important for people to keep using it….. so if you have cash and think it’s important why don’t you spend it (having people think your a criminal is a ridiculous answer)?

I pay my window cleaner with a bank transfer

plumcake2924 · 20/04/2024 14:09

Drives me crazy when someone owes me money and gives it to me in cash! Just do it by bank transfer as I have to take it into the bank to deposit which is a pain!

Even at my local supermarket the self scans do not take cash, so I have to queue in the long line for a manned till if I want to use up my cash.

They can't give change?
What a cheek.
I'd vote with my feet and not return.
Card payment has it's place but so does cash.

well if they don't regularly take cash, why have a till full of change?

Carsarelife · 20/04/2024 14:13

I like cash and I think cash still definitely has its place in life. For example - birthday cards, the tooth fairy, boot sales etc.
I bet waiters/waitresses got more tips when people used cash and I remember a time when you couldn't pay by card for something less than £5 in a shop, now you can pay for any amount

Frugalfruit · 20/04/2024 14:16

This is my sole reason for not using cash.

mydogisthebest · 20/04/2024 14:25

I like using cash but more and more places are not accepting it.

Me and DH went to a cafe the other day and had coffee and cake. When DH tried to pay by card the owner said he only took cash. We didn't have any cash on us and there were no signs saying this was the case.

DH had to drive to the nearest cash machine. Just wish places would be consistent

I don't know anyone who uses cash now. Who wants to faff around carrying coins and carrying exact amounts.

Well when the card system goes down which it did in Sainsbury's not long ago it is good to have cash on you. People are far to reliant on cards and systems can and do fail

BurstingSeams · 20/04/2024 14:34

I found it really difficult last time I was in the UK. I didn't want to keep using my credit card and being charged exchange fees per transaction but nowhere took cash.

CombatBarbie · 20/04/2024 14:35

I'm a bit concerned at the amount of people that are negative about cash, knowing the full pros and cons of a cashless society!! It's not a society I'd choose to live in that's for sure!

I find it much easier to stick to a budget with card but I use YNAB. If I have cash it just seems to disappear with no trace. Using card/YNAB means every penny is accounted for.

It may be accounted for but the PP (and many others) find card paying means going over budget because it's not physical.

itwasntmetho · 20/04/2024 14:39

Miloandfreddy · 20/04/2024 12:18

I'd prefer to pay everything by card. Too many self employed hair dressers, make up artists etc etc only take cash. And it's so obvious it's cos they're not declaring it and claiming benefits too. And the rest of us on PAYE have to cough up regardless.

You don't know that.
I work for an accountant, we bookkeep for some cash only sole traders.
They put their self assessments in yearly.

I don’t disagree. But the post I quoted suggested it was easier to stick to a budget with cash. My reply was to point out that that’s not the case for everyone.

I find that when I ooe my purse it contains both cash and cards and my hand is equally able to take either out and put either back in

Are you not familiar with how a purse works 😀

godmum56 · 20/04/2024 14:45

our local posh plant nursery and adjoining cafe stopped taking cash when they reopened after covid but around 6 months ago, they started again.

Me too, it's too easy to control people if you can cut off their access to their own money.
The thing with the Canadian truckers was a head turner.

You must have got that wrong, according to every thread on here about paying cash for jobs it s an absolute certainly that the person is fiddling tax,VAT and child maintenance

But unless you keep all your cash under your bed, you can have your access to can stopped at any time anyway. All it takes is for all the cash machines to stop working.

Yes with the cash they're declaring. It doesn't mean they're declaring it all 🤣

To give change to customers who wish to pay in cash.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 20/04/2024 15:43

Cash is King!!

We have to keep using cash to keep it going!!

In terms of the pub, the cheeky fuckers, If my bill was £91 say, I'd have given them the £90 in notes, then paid the £1 by card, just to piss them off. They are cutting their noses off to spite their faces by not dealing in cash as they have to pay for every card transaction. Idiots. The only people that will win in a cashless society are the very very rich billionaire bankers.

MrsClatterbuck · 20/04/2024 15:45

A couple of local businesses have notices requesting customers to pay with cash if they can due to the high cost of card transactions charged by their bank.

I think the criminal bit comes from a large amount of cash?

We used to encourage our children to ‘save up’ birthday and Christmas money but as they got older they put it in the bank. If they hadn’t, when they bought their first car it would have been in cash (like mine was).As PP mentioned, car sales etc have to be bank transfer now due to money laundering.

Re buying a car it depends if it's a large dealership or small independent. When buying a new car at a large dealership I couldn't have even started the process without a smart phone to receive codes to start the process. They didn't take cash might have taken up to £1500 or cheques. Even a debit or credit card just a bank transfer. Whereas when dh bought his from a independent the quy wasn't happy I also used my credit card along with cash.

Seeline · 20/04/2024 16:29

I bought a brand new car last year using chip and pin! Didn't even have to confirm it through my banking app.

I did the same in 2010.
