Cash - am I out of touch?

AIBU thinking I should still be able to use cash?

I accept that most places, and people, find it easier using cards but shouldn’t you still be able to use cash occasionally?

Went out for lunch the other day. The bill came to over £100 but as it was something planned, I had cash. The pub said whilst they can take cash, they don’t give change. Since when was this a thing.

At work, when people get married/have babies/leave etc, we do a collection. You always used to stick your contribution in a pot or envelope but now you have to do it online. Not everyone gives now because it’s obvious how much they’ve contributed.

AINBU, that I should still occasionally be able to use cash or AIBU cash has had its day.

Card transactions not available this morning in one of my local big store, obviously a gilch, I had cash most of the queue were unable to pay...caused havoc!

Allfur · 20/04/2024 16:43

Did you feel anazing

peakygold · 20/04/2024 16:51

We sold all of our garage clutter at a car boot sale this morning and made over £200 IN CASH. This afternoon we bought loads of goodies at a local jumble sale AND PAID CASH. Plenty of cash about. I ensure I have a full coin purse for when those places accept 'Correct money only' <<narrows eyes at the Geffrye Museum>>. If a shop or café doesn't accept cash, I drop my purchases and go elsewhere. Watch The Handmaid's Tale if you want convincing.

lazyarse123 · 20/04/2024 16:58

I use both but I work in a shop and it is staggering how often the system goes down and people can't use their phones. The abuse we get is very unfair. But then we are an easy target.

Me too, it's too easy to control people if you can cut off their access to their own money.
The thing with the Canadian truckers was a head turner.

what thing?

exomoon · 20/04/2024 17:13

I always have cards, Apple Pay and cash in multiple denominations (tenners/fivers/£ coins). I’ve managed to get amazing bargains just by having cash on me.

I like cash and still use it sometimes!

Its appalling that they didn't even keep enough to cover people's change!

MountCaramel · 20/04/2024 17:32

Isn't that running a scam by not giving change? Say your bill came to ÂŁ92 & you paid ÂŁ100 cash then the pub not giving the ÂŁ8 change they owe you is well dodgy.

I'd report them to the council's trading standards department.

lazyarse123 · 20/04/2024 17:37

I think with the pubs cf no change thing I would have paid the note amount in cash and put the odd change amount on my card.

I would have suggested they send it by bank transfer.

Mairzydotes · 20/04/2024 17:53

I still use cash , but I don't carry huge amounts . I like to keep small amounts to one size , and let it build up , then I treat myself. I use my card for a big shop , but I often pay cash for little bits here and there.

If I'm in a shop and they ask if I'm paying by card and try to send me to self service, I say no so a person has to serve me.

NoisySnail · 20/04/2024 17:56

I am seeing more places encouraging cash.
I also go places that struggle with wi fi connectivity. You can't always manage to pay by card anyway. One place the woman said to me they had tried everything to boost their signal but still struggle.

NoisySnail · 20/04/2024 17:57

I also agree that I will not contribute to work things where everyone can see how much you are giving.

Peonies12 · 20/04/2024 18:02

Cash is a massive hassle for most businesses, especially small ones, and it’s a tiny minority using it. I can’t even remember when I last had any cash.

Seeline · 20/04/2024 18:03

And yet both my local chippie and local Chinese only take cash. They don't seem to find it a hassle.

I don't think it is for small businesses. Recently a small restaurant charged me too much via card and refunded me the excess as cash. They were very upset at having to give up their cash.

greengreyblue · 20/04/2024 18:08

I’ve had the same £10 note in my purse for months. I use a £1 coin for the supermarket trolley but hardly ever need cash. Our work collections used to be cash but they’re now a bank transfer too. I use cards or ApplePay. It’s fabulous. Most people I know that use cash are self employed…..

There are always people keen to claim that no business wants to take cash as it is a massive hassle, in spite of the existence of businesses that encourage and welcome cash. I mean the evidence that what they are saying is wrong is right in front of their faces.

greengreyblue · 20/04/2024 18:09

@Seeline theres a reason for that.

Extortionate card handler fees by the likes of Visa, etc.

Like I said I’m very horrible, but if they don’t want my hard earned cash, that’s ok, I vote with my feet and use other places.

Voting with your feet is one thing. Dumping your shopping is another.

BobnLen · 20/04/2024 18:15

We had to use cash the other day in a cafe, there was a note on the door saying cash only

Juniperberries200 · 20/04/2024 18:15

I always try to use cash. Use it or lose it!

greengreyblue · 20/04/2024 18:16

I frequent a beach in Devon. There are two cafes. One only takes cash. Guess which one isn’t thriving?
