To be frustrated at meal deal selections?

In the Meal Deal sections. Went to four shops today and none had a plain cheese sandwich (not even any price labels so assume they don't sell them) but a variety of cheese and pickle, cheese and onion, triple cheese etc.

FFS I just want a plain cheese sandwich!

Tesco do one but I get what you mean. Most either have something else in it or added mayo.

Do you not play the best value meal deal game? Massive sandwich, best snack and most expensive drink.

About 17 years ago before my call centre moved location, on weekends, no canteen but a Boots at the small retail park back of the building. We used to have a competition where we played who saved the most money.

In those days, Boots did a spicy chicken jacket potato, 1 lire orange juice to name a couple of things which they probably don’t do now. You could save £2.50 more than the cost of the meal deal.

There was a microwave in the canteen area which was open plan as you got through the security gate.

Meal deals are piss poor if you are vegan or have any dietary restrictions. We have no GF options at all for the main

I know! That's the best fun!

I feel bad if the drink I want on the meal deal is in promotion so it's not a £2.70 one but suddenly £1.20. It irrationally annoys me to feel I am losing value!

I only really get meal deals at the airport but my go to is triple chicken wrap, fancy cereal yogurt pot and innocent smoothie so it's a breakfast, snack and lunch all in one but I've still usually eaten it all before a 7 am departure.

Auburngal · 19/04/2024 22:31

Just make your own. Cheaper

Oilioy · 19/04/2024 22:31

Buy a fresh baguette and some pre sliced cheese. Much nicer.

ICanFixHim · 19/04/2024 22:33

If it was the last cheese sandwich and someone else picked it up, would you ask them to swap? 😄

mitogoshi · 19/04/2024 22:35

Some supermarkets do a simply or just range, Greggs certainly have just ham

littlebitstuck2024 · 19/04/2024 22:41

I've noticed the small Tesco/Sainsburys don't tend to sell plain cheese sandwiches which disappoints me. Yes, we all know the big ones sell them but the point is, you're usually far away from the big supermarkets during a cheese sandwich emergency.

Lols to the PPs who have helpfully educated us all on how to make a cheese sandwich (Do people even say lols anymore?) I'll absolutely purchase a massive loaf of bread, cheese, butter, a knife, a plate, and a chopping board when out and about and feeling peckish. I have images of OP wrestling a toddler and a loaf of bread, making sandwiches at the train station/park/wherever.

Homesweethome23 · 19/04/2024 22:49

I got a plain cheese sandwich today from Tesco but only the large store the small ones don’t seem to stock them.

TakeOnFlea · 19/04/2024 22:55

Coop is the best now thanks to the Costa machine.

Upallnight2 · 19/04/2024 22:58

I have noticed the lack of basic sandwiches in a meal deal. Albeit its for my fussy child 🤣 cheese and tomato, cheese savory, cheese and pickle etc. Usually end up with cheese and ham and he picks half the filling out 🙈

HauntedBungalow · 19/04/2024 23:21

TakeOnFlea · 19/04/2024 22:55

Meh. Co-op used to be an actual co-operative enterprise owned in part by its customers to whom it paid yearly dividends. Over time membership of this morphed into a loyalty card scheme that was slightly worse than Tesco's in terms of payout and now this year it is just a two tier pricing scheme that you have to pay to enter into.

So Co-op can suck my cock. Costa is a piece of shit tax dodging crap coffee arsehole anyway.

SanFranBear · 19/04/2024 23:40

I like the Coop - the membership is £1 annually and they usually have deals that I use every week... its also about 30 seconds from my front door so dead handy when I realise I have once again, messed up my shop.

I feel as you do about the Tesco Clubcard - there is absolutely no point I'm shopping there unless you're signed up as it's so much more expensive if you just pop in for a few bits.

On the Meal Deal front - over 20 years ago, it was all about the Boots one and I always had the Chicken & Bacon Sub (with the lush tomato relish), Max Walkers Salt & Vinegar and their Boysenberry Water... soooooooo fucking good! Today's just don't compare (although do like the various bowls and fancy salads you can get at Sainsburys!)

CharlotteBog · 20/04/2024 00:28

I know what you mean OP. No one in my family like mayonnaise, or the sauces, tikka and what have you. So that rules out loads. DS2 always wants just plain ham, and it's very, very hard to find. We tend to buy a roll and some ham and a bag of rocket or something.

NeverEnoughPants · 20/04/2024 05:28

"I'll absolutely purchase a massive loaf of bread, cheese, butter, a knife, a plate, and a chopping board when out and about and feeling peckish"

I wasn't suggesting a massive loaf - just a normal sized one. Butter isn't really needed (I love it, but it adds so very little nutritionally) - so you won't need a knife. The cheese is already sliced so you won't need a chopping board. And who uses a plate when they eat a meal deal sandwich?? Sure, it's basic. But a meal deal plain cheese sandwich is really not much better.

Also, in most instances with a little bit of planning ahead, it's possible to buy the ingredients and make the sandwich in advance of the trip out. So if you want the bread cut in two, you can do that with a knife at home.

I don't think anyone suggested that. It just seems a bit mad to trail around four supermarkets for an elusive plain cheese sandwich when in every single one of them, the OP could have bought a single bakery roll (or pack if they didn't have loose ones) and a pack of sliced cheese, split the roll open with her hands and shoved in a slice or two of cheese.

You wouldn't need a chopping board, get sliced or already grated cheese, buy a single roll (or even two!), use a tissue for a plate?

Honestly, no need for a massive loaf of bread, no need for half the stuff you've mentioned actually lol!

Peonies12 · 20/04/2024 06:01

Make one? Can’t believe anyone buys a pre-made plain cheese sandwich. They’re such crappy ingredients as well

Auburngal · 20/04/2024 06:15

you don’t need spread. Buy a cob, tear into it so you open into the middle. Put in the cheese.

Don't forget a pack of cloths and a spray wipe to clean the chopping board and a bottle of washing up liquid to wash the plate and knife, a bowl to wash it up in, water to wash it in and a kettle to heat the water?

lol

ICanFixHim · 20/04/2024 06:25

Oh stop it @Noyesnoyes. If you need the speed and convenience of a meal deal, buying bread and cheese and making a really crap sandwich on a bench outside isn't really going to cut it.

I don't even like supermarket sandwiches but I'll take one of those over your proposed solution!

What buying a roll and putting a slice of cheese in it?

Hard work I know!

Surely triple cheese is just plain cheese, albeit three types?

The triple cheese one I've seen (Tesco) is Cheese and tomato, cheese and onion, cheese and pickle.

User135644 · 20/04/2024 06:30

Hate the way you can rarely just get anything on plain white bread in these deals. I can't eat all the seeding crap they put in, for allergy reasons.

suki1964 · 20/04/2024 07:42

When grandaughter was very young, she too would only eat a cheese sandwich - Subway is your friend
