AIBU - Etiquette disembarking plane

I recently flew into LA, the flight was jam packed and the overhead lockers filled up quickly so the flight attendants took bags off people and put them wherever they could find space in the lockers.

I was in an aisle seat, and had a connecting flight, so when the seatbelt sign went off I stood up like everyone else, got my carry on out of the overhead locker and waited to disembark.

That's when an American lady from the row in front of me turned to me and said she needed to get past me to get to her luggage and then bring it backto her place in the queue.

I said sorry, that's not going to work as the aisle is really narrow and filled with luggage right now, it'd be best if you sat down and waited until some people have disembarked so there's more space.

She got angry and said "Fine, if you don't move I'm going to BLOCK the aisle. We'll get the flight attendants involved"

It wasn't just her, there was also a group of men in front who needed their luggage from the back of the plane as well and they backed her up (!)

After such a long flight I was over it, and said in my most calm but firm voice:

"Guys, waiting is a fact of life, you're just going to have to sit and wait.

"Your luggage is down the back of the plane. I'm sorry but that's not my fault. This is a very narrow space and I don't know what you want me to do."

In the end the flight attendants never got involved, as someone behind me passed luggage over my head to the lady and the men.

At the time I thought I was in the right (I fly a lot for work). But the more I think about it, is that just how they do it in the US? If you're "ahead" in the rows, you retain the right to get off first even if you're not prepared? If that's the case, I understand why she was angry.

@planeetiquette it's quite simple, I've got one account and other people just disagree with you as well.

MN will confirm. If you ask I am sure.

You need to understand that it's not me in other guises tell you YABU, it's all different people saying it.

I know you want to believe that everyone one thinks you are right, but they don't.

But if it makes you happy in your world to believe that, what can anyone say.

OP- AIBU
Lots of posters - YABU
OP- No I'm not, you're all trolls, sock puppets and all wrong.

It does happen a lot on AIBU.

Ok, if you say so ….

Well, except that out of the 1000+ voters on this, 60% think she is not being unreasonable, so I think she's quite within her rights to think that she is NBU and the YABU people are wrong... (yes, yes, I know you can't vote on the app, but 1000 voters is a pretty good indication of sentiment).

Noyesnoyes · 22/04/2024 13:08

@PercyJackson that's 60% of the posters using the website, the people using the app (like me!) cannot vote.

I have already explained this and that's why a previous PP said it wasn't a true reflection.

Noyesnoyes · 22/04/2024 13:09

@PercyJackson it's really not a good reflection as I would say the vast majority use apps!

@planeetiquette I think your keep calling it trolling is because you don't like 40% think YABU?

Can you explain why people who use the app vs. people who use Mumsnet on the web would have different attitudes to how people disembark from a plane?

No. There's no logic in it.

@planeetiquette I think that it's not reflective.. IMO.

Which you clearly don't like, but it's still my opinion.

Immemorialelms · 22/04/2024 14:03

I didn't care enough to vote but I'm getting annoyed with OP so I do care now. (There's some anecdata for those thinking about the polls.)

OP your question was really "are there different kinds of normal when it comes to getting off a plane" - you put it as UK vs US but really you are asking if there are different norms. A 60 40 ratio tells you that yes there are different norms, so why are you carrying on saying you're totally right?

YANBU.

The woman was a twat. I'd probably just have stepped aside to let her go, and let everyone else get annoyed with her as she pushed past but not saved the space for her and just got off as the line moved forward, as it would take her ages to get to the back and then to the front again. On every single flight (though only ever one to the US) I've ever been on people get off roughly in row order, and if your bag is not stowed near your seat you would definitely have to wait to get it until the plane is almost empty.

Come on, connecting flights aren't so tight that the last person off the plane would miss it.

Are you joking? Do you actually ever fly anywhere? I’ve been met at the exit of the plane and literally run through airports to get a connecting flight due to outbound delays!

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 23/04/2024 16:01

Surely the simplest thing to have done. Would've been to move back into your seat and pull your case as tight into edge of the seat as possible. That way she could've gotten past you.

Goodtogossip · 24/04/2024 15:51

Would she of had to pass her luggage locker on her way off the plane? If so then she was BU to want to get it & return to her seat as she could have grabbed it on her way out. However, if she had to backtrack down the plane to get it & had to pass you to do that then you were BU not to let her go past you, grab her bag & return to her seat so she could get off in turn.
