What to use instead of microwave ?

Never owned a microwave. A lot of people I know irl can’t get their heads around it and don’t believe me when I say I’ve never needed one, I haven’t until now.
I have a baby and I’ve no idea how to warm his food up that I’ve batched cooked.
For example last night I made salmon, sweet potato and kale , extra portions in Tupperware ready for meals this week but how do I reheat?
Do I give it cold? Warm in pan? Can I reheat salmon?

Do you have an air fryer? My one has a reheat mode and I just use a ceramic/glass container

DH had beans for lunch.

Bean pan pic attached to show no issues with cleaning up.

You’d have washing up no matter what container you use, though it’s easier with the microwave- put beans in bowl, microwave- eat!

usernother · 16/04/2024 18:03

I'm old enough to remember before microwaves were invented and food would be heated up in a saucepan on the hob. Easy. But a microwave is easier.

Am I the only person who used to end up with mush in the bottom of the pan?

Oh and you put a lid or cling film on the jug.

Surely that just means you burnt the beans onto the bottom of the pan? So if you don’t burn the beans you won’t have an issue!

I dont have a microwave, and though I live alone now and often have leftovers I manage easily enough. We only had a microwave put into one kitchen we had done, and barely used it. Microwaved food always seems to lack texture to me, though that’s probably just in my mind. So subsequent kitten refits haven’t involved a microwave. Heating things up either means using the hob directly, a steamer on the hob, or the oven. Sure it takes longer than a microwave, but not long enough to be an inconvenience to me :)

I see they still make baby bottle and food warmers, there are several on amazon, if you don't want to get a microwave. But a microwave is really super handy.

Just get a microwave. Why are you making things unnecessarily difficult?

More that she always ate* whenever we/one of us did. Just gave her stuff off our plates. Surely this isn’t so unusual? We’re all night owls so she’s never had a 7pm bedtime.

*BLW so more playing with food than actually eating it at that age.

(wondering if this is why there are so many fussy eaters in the UK, if babies and children have different meal times and different food.)

She went to playgroup at 2 (a couple of hours or so in the morning) and back home for lunch (breakfast). Was in full time school nursery at 3. Why?

Kattiekat · 17/04/2024 20:45

If frozen, defrost
heat a pan of water
put food in a container that will fit into the pan of hotwater
leave it in there until it’s the temperature you want.

I am so glad I have seen this post, people often think it’s weird that I don’t have a microwave either. I used to have a one and when it broke I didn’t bother buying a new one I cook from scratch so didn’t see the need for it. I am a year down the line and haven’t missed it, the fact you don’t have one just shows that you eat really healthy

I would warm in a pan, some babies even like cold food

littlefireseverywhere · 17/04/2024 20:48

I’m 18 years down the line without having a microwave. I did have one and then it broke when my first child was having some of his food reheated it caught fire. I did without. I never wanted another one. I’ve now got an air fryer and as others have said you can reheat stuff in that. Before that, I just used to reheat stuff in the hob or the oven. But with all my kids, I did baby led weaning & ate with them. They basically ate what we ate at similar times.

GreenWales · 17/04/2024 20:50

we also never had a microwave before having children!
my advice would be to buy one, you can defrost babies meals in there quickly. Just make sure you keep stirring as it cooks

DH rarely comes home before 6.30pm, often later, even now the teenager likes to eat about 5pm. I can’t imagine leaving a baby who was tired wait until after 8pm to eat.

and people do eat at different times when there are jobs and after school activities involved.

Mamabear487 · 17/04/2024 20:55

Just get a cheap microwave it Will save you so much time when baby is hungry and you don’t have to faff with the oven or pan which might also make stuff dry. Also think of the cost of heating up your oven multiple times a day for babies food which they will most likely throw on the floor or play with

Emmz1510 · 17/04/2024 20:59

Oh pipe down all the sanctimonious perfect mummies. I really can’t with mumsnet sometimes!

Baby ate what you all ate all the time? From the moment they started weaning at 6 months? Even if you choose to do baby led weaning, baby isn’t eating pizza, steak, burgers, and curries from 6 months are they? Maybe over time, but not right away. And what about people who work and have to batch cook a couple times a week and freeze portions of their meals for the baby? Not everyone has time to cook fresh cooked meals for everyone every day of the week. And it’s only good sense to make bigger amounts of meals and freeze some surely? Anyone would think batch cooking and reheating was inferior to having it freshly cooked every day- news flash, it’s not.
Sometimes it will make sense for baby to have what you are having, or deconstructed versions perhaps, but sometimes it won’t.

Another vote for getting a microwave OP. It makes more sense than reheating tiny portions in an oven or on the hob.

Vonesk · 17/04/2024 21:01

Microwave destroys food.

Branwells77 · 17/04/2024 21:01

Soher · 16/04/2024 09:17

@TomeTome do you have children?
My baby literally eats 5 or 6 mouthfuls. I think it would be impossible to make a meal with such small quantities. I do make everything fresh for him but he’s not going to eat an entire salmon fillet at his age.

@Soher This made me giggle and I can’t believe your 5 month old isn’t eating a full salmon fillet already 😆
(I am joking I would be concerned if a 5 month old was eating a full fillet, just before anyone jumps in it’s only a joke)
I would definitely invest in a microwave it will save you so much time and my DC especially at your DS age very rarely ate at the same time as us so reheating was often the case for us too enjoy every second because it goes by so fast good luck OP
