What to use instead of microwave ?

Never owned a microwave. A lot of people I know irl can’t get their heads around it and don’t believe me when I say I’ve never needed one, I haven’t until now.
I have a baby and I’ve no idea how to warm his food up that I’ve batched cooked.
For example last night I made salmon, sweet potato and kale , extra portions in Tupperware ready for meals this week but how do I reheat?
Do I give it cold? Warm in pan? Can I reheat salmon?

I was cooking for me and DD had whatever we were having. I don’t eat meat so batch cooking is a lot less effective for me.

I never had one either op. I got through baby years heating in stove and in oven. Gave up and got one when she became a toddler who consistently wanted her food reheated after letting it get cold 😂

FFS. Yes, I made meals for the freezer and reheated them. But I didn’t do separate meals for my baby which is what is causing the issue for OP.

It’s a bit more complicated when you don’t eat carbs and are allergic to nightshades but good for you.

Exactly this. Pretty unusual to have NEVER reheated food?

Itsaloadofbollocksbut · 16/04/2024 09:22

If OP is cooking fresh every day she can just give the baby some of that without needing to reheat it.

I've managed to raise two kids without a microwave. Stews, soups, casseroles all get heated in a pan.

Baked potatoes are so much better in the oven.

I guess it would be handy for Lasagne but we all love lasagne so there's rarely any leftovers.

@Itsaloadofbollocksbut if you don’t eat carbs does that mean you didn’t feed your DC carbs if they ate what you ate?

BurbageBrook · 16/04/2024 09:25

A microwave will make your life easier.

I don't have a microwave either, if we have leftovers we heat them in a pan, ie would reheat chilli and cook some fresh rice. We're due our first child in a few months and have said we'll get a microwave at some point, just for ease!

quizzys · 16/04/2024 09:28

OP, with a baby/young child, I think you are making your life difficult by not having a microwave TBH.

I'd get one today or tomorrow. They are not hugely expensive anymore, and the faff of putting things in a bowl, on top of a pan of simmering water, or putting in the oven, or whatever, just for one little portion for a child is not a good use of your time.

But off you go and use some of the methods mentioned. It sounds like a total waste of valuable time to me though!

Perfect28 · 16/04/2024 09:28

Why not just get a microwave op, they are pretty inexpensive.

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 16/04/2024 09:32

There are some real dick responses on this thread already and it's only about a sodding microwave.

OP your best bet is probably to get a microwave, it'll be easier, but failing that you can reheat in the oven or in a pan on the hob. Add a tad more moisture or it'll dry out.

Whatever you do, don't reheat in a bowl of hot water. Terrible suggestion.. the food won't get hot enough to kill any bacteria (especially with meat or fish). You need to reheat until very hot and then leave to cool until it's ok for the baby.

And just mentioning it as you say you've never reheated food, it may be worth you looking into what shouldn't be reheated. For example, rice. Many people on here will reheat rice and say they haven't died yet but that doesn't change the fact the advice is to never reheat rice, it can make you extremely ill.

What me and DH ate. He eats meat. And carbs. And nightshades (DD inherited my allergy though.)

Jessforless · 16/04/2024 09:34

My microwave broke about six months ago and we knew we were getting a new kitchen so thought we’d just cope without one until then…

what a faff! Get a microwave OP. So sick of heating things in pots!

JoniBlue · 16/04/2024 09:34

I used an electric bottle warmer to heat up baby food as well as bottles of milk or take the chill off of juice cold from the fridge. I didn't have a microwave at that time. Also simmered in a pot of water, but the bottle warmer was faster. I had forgotten all about those bottle warmer until now.
