Messy neighbours

Hi need to rant….Where we live we have a shared entrance and stairway with neighbours then our entrance doors are opposite each other there is a small square of hallway between us. I have an issue that the neighbours clutter the hallway and stairs with all their crap . On the small square hallway they have one of those builders buckets filled with crap like dirty shoes umbrellas etc they also have a scooter, tent , more umbrellas, jump start kit which hardly leaves any room when we come out of the door .Then going up the stairs they have about 6 sets of dirty shoes covered in mud. To add insult they have added a thick folded up gymnastics matt at the bottom which slightly blocks you getting out the main door but it’s doable. Now ive had so many polite conversations leading to arguments with her about this told her its a fire hazard/ health and safety not to mention it looks so trampy it’s embarrassing when i have visitors it cant even be cleaned properly it makes me so angry its the entrance to my home. She won’t listen i don’t know what else to do.

just a little over each pile/inside each shoe

BobbyBiscuits · 12/04/2024 14:35

Who owns the hallway? It is indeed a severe fire hazard. Take photos and send to landlord/owner/HA/agent? You cannot obscure the pathway with stuff.
Or speak to the council. Maybe tell neighbour you will take these measures if they don't move it, to give them a week to shift it?

Thank you. Ive tried to find who owns the building my landlord isnt being helpful i was thinking of the council but not sure if they will do anything. I think because they own their property they have a right.

Who is the owner of the flats? They will have a duty of care to make sure corridors and stairways are kept clear, and there is likely to be something in the building maintenance agreement.

Butterfly212 · 12/04/2024 14:38

Yes i am trying to find this out as its just ridiculous now. We have nothing in the hallway.

This is a serious fire hazard and if this person refuses to be considerate and decent, I'd raise holy hell with whoever I had to to get it resolved. Report this to the council and the fire brigade immediately. You could also toss all of their shit in the bin.

I did consider the fire brigade. Would they come out ?

Definitely pop into your local fire station, perhaps with a tin of biscuits, and have a concerned needing advice kind of chat.

Haydenn · 12/04/2024 14:42

Your managing agent should take responsibility for this from a fire safety POV. Do you pay any service charge or ground rent? That’s who I’d be complaining to

tuliplav · 12/04/2024 14:43

photos to your LL

tuliplav · 12/04/2024 14:44

when you say it descends in to arguments…. what on earth is her defence?!

Apparently who am i to tell her where to put her stuff . I mean she just makes no sense . I left my sons scooter there for one evening last year as i couldn’t find the garage key to put it away and she kicked off i just don’t know what’s wrong with her.

This is serious as it is a huge fire safety risk.

In our block our manging agent does quarterly inspections and anything left in the communal areas has a note put on it and if it is not taken away by the owner in 7 days they remove it.

The only reason i didn’t bring it in it was covered in mud but i made sure it wasn’t blocking and i cleaned up the next day when I put it away.

This does not happen here.

Tell them the clutter is a fire risk and needs to be moved immediately.
They wouldn’t want to be liable if there was an emergency.

BobbyBiscuits · 12/04/2024 14:49

@Butterfly212 thanks. Definitely contact the council, it can be classed as fly tipping. But annoying of landlord not to help. I'm not sure legally but you could look up the boundary on land registry to see if they own half, ie the bit they are dumping on?

GoingOnHol · 12/04/2024 14:52

The fire brigade do free home fire safety checks/visits, no need for biscuits(although they might have one if you offered đŸ˜†)
this is my.local brigade, yours must do something similar
