Ewwww.....primary school kids in shopping trollies

I may be classed as a pearl clutcher and am prepared to maybe be told so but...

Does anyone else think it really unhygienic when you see primary school children riding in the basket of a shopping trolley? As in dressed in their school uniforms where mum has popped in for a few bits on the way home.

Bless them, been at school all day walking and standing in God knows what - in and out of the loos with possible wee, poo, vomit covered floors, walking by dog poo and possibly stomping in muddy puddles on the way to the shops. 😖

This is where we then put our food....sometimes unpackaged like loose fruit and veg. Yuk!!

Can't imagine how a dc's head would land on a supermarket floor...
Some people are just stupid..

It's not new though is it?
Personally I've never thought as supermarket trolleys are very hygienic in the first place

Now I know why I scan items as I shop, then put them straight into my bags, which tbh are a few years old and probably not that hygienic either.

The trolleys have had food put in and out of them (including loose veg), been sat out in the rain and being shat on by birds and crawled on by insects. I’m sure we will all live.

I occasionally let my ds 5 sit in the trolley if he’s really tired but I make him takes his shoes off and line the trolley with shopping bags so he’s not in much contact with the it.

I reckon primary aged kids aren’t the worst thing those trolleys have seen…

Children bigger than toddlers are too heavy to be in trolleys in my opinion, but that's because of unnecessary wear and tear as far as I'm concerned. I think your hygiene concerns are a bit precious, since the unwrapped fruit and veg you're putting in has also been coughed and sneezed over, and handled by any number of staff before you pick it up.

YABU for thinking that the trolleys are hygienic to start with. Honestly a child, primary age or otherwise sitting in it is the least if your worries.

I do also see birds perching on trolleys at my local tesco quite often too any they are probably a bigger hygiene concern!

Most food is packaged and that packaging is removed before you eat it. It has already been transported and handled in multiple ways. The supermarket trolleys are pushed by people with all sorts of germs all over their hands and food has been in and out. The trolleys are stored outside…the loose fruit and veg can be put in those small reusable bags and most loose items have rind or skin that isn’t eaten (with a couple of exceptions) plus fruit and veg is supposed to be washed before you eat it….
a kid in a trolley is not going to cause some sort of contamination disaster.

Doesn’t bother me from a hygiene POV but does from a safety POV. I have seen children lean over and topple they aren’t designed for someone sitting in the main body of them.

How is that different than any adult walking around, being at work, going to the loo, picking up their dog poo. I worked at an acute hospital and cannot even begin to list all bodily fluids and substances I would be covered in at the end of a working day. I give you no guarantees despite washing my hands that you won't get any of that muck on your shopping trolley.
What about pre-school children being in trolleys? Do you think they are any cleaner? All the floor crawling...
And don't you wash your veg before eating?

I put my (short and slight) 4 year old in the trolley, mainly so she doesn’t cause another form of annoyance (like clogging up the aisles or touching things she shouldn’t be). I don’t really understand the hygiene concern as the child seat doesn’t touch the inside of the trolley and her feet dangle down at the front. No overlap at all.

Tell you what let’s just ban children from everything, they’re unneccessary anyway

I put my primary children straight into carrier bags in the trolley so they don’t touch your gross shopping germs.

People can’t win though, it the kids were running around people would complain so there’s one solution by putting them in the trolley and people still moan!

First world problem. I have let my 5 year old sit in the trolley. Cannot get worked up about it.

Report
CelesteCunningham · 12/04/2024 10:01

Couldn't care less about the hygiene aspect - anything not packaged will be washed anyway.

I do dislike it from a safety pov though. Either in the seat or walking, that's the rule in this house.

Shopping trolleys are hardly sterile are they ConfusedI'd be more concerned about what my DC could come into contact from it than the other way around.

Report
Cheepcheepcheep · 12/04/2024 10:02

What do you think climbs into the trolleys at night in the car park? 🐀🐿️🕷️

I let my 3.5yo sit in the trolley, she doesn’t muck around and I need the seat for her 2yo brother. Any loose things I put in there are either peeled or washed (and as PPs have said, you don’t want to know what’s going on that fruit and veg in the field!)

I don’t like kids mucking about in supermarkets at all, but this seems precious to me.

I don't think you should assume the food packaging or produce is very clean tbh.

It’s definitely unsafe, they are too heavy. But trolleys are already manky with all sorts from sitting around outside and in warehouses. Rat and mouse pee I’m sure.

Ok....backs away slowly out the door...some valid points! Maybe I'm overthinking it....Best not to think too long and hard about the state of shopping trollies in general.
@GoodnightAdeline ....im talking about in the actual basket bit where the shopping goes, not in the seat. I certainly never implied children should be banned...how ridiculous!

I can’t get stressed about this. The shopping trolleys are stored outside and open to bird poop and foxes spraying up them. Even without a child in them, they’re not clean!

No idea why you would think a child is more disgusting than a communal old shopping trolley - says more about you than the reality of the situation. Ask yourself where your repulsion might come from.
