Ewwww.....primary school kids in shopping trollies

I may be classed as a pearl clutcher and am prepared to maybe be told so but...

Does anyone else think it really unhygienic when you see primary school children riding in the basket of a shopping trolley? As in dressed in their school uniforms where mum has popped in for a few bits on the way home.

Bless them, been at school all day walking and standing in God knows what - in and out of the loos with possible wee, poo, vomit covered floors, walking by dog poo and possibly stomping in muddy puddles on the way to the shops. 😖

This is where we then put our food....sometimes unpackaged like loose fruit and veg. Yuk!!

It's a form of natural selection.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/04/2024 10:09

Children who don't fit in the seats, should not be in the trolleys at all.

Riverlee · 12/04/2024 10:10

I hate seeing kids in trolleys, mainly from a safety point of view. I’ve seen near accidents in the past, only stopped by intervention of someone.

Like what?!

carryavan · 12/04/2024 10:12

The trolley rack at our closest shop is outside and most are usually covered in bird poo. They hose them down regularly but it never gets everything off. Don't see how a child is less hygienic than that so it's not something I worry about. My shopping goes straight into the bags.

Shopping trolleys can tip fairly easily, especially if someone leans out over the edge. They aren't designed for that.

35965a · 12/04/2024 10:16

Have you ever been in a supermarket carpark late at night? Because once you see all the rats running around and all over the trollies, some children’s feet in them doesn’t seem so disgusting.

Mrsknowitall · 12/04/2024 10:16

I used to put my son in the trolley simply because he is autistic and it made my life easier and wasn’t to full on for him with all the hustle and bustle of a super market, he was also a runner so I knew exactly where he was, I would of ended up stressed and telling him off then he would of been there crying, which has happened on a number of occasions then you get the “control your kid” looks from people before they run to mumsnet to write a post about having to listen to unruly children screaming when they are trying to do a shop 🤦‍♀️ can’t win either way it seems 😂

Very dramatic reaction to children wearing normal clothes and going about their normal day. Do you make yours change and hose them down outside before they're allowed in with all this horrendous filth on them?

I just let them carry on with their day as normal.

Riverlee · 12/04/2024 10:43

The two I remember most is when a trolley nearly tipped over when the child reached over to his parent, and secondly a child nearly fall out when they leant over the side. In both cases, someone (not the parent) intervened to prevent an accident.

CountFucula · 12/04/2024 10:44

Can’t be doing with this level of silly squeamishness.

Wash yr veg surely?

stormywhethers321 · 12/04/2024 10:53

I think this is borrowing trouble.

If the streets are so awash in vomit and plague that this is worth worrying about then we have bigger problems than shopping trolleys.

Produce grows in dirt and shit.

CammyChameleon · 12/04/2024 10:58

Do you know how many times a day you can clean a conveyor belt/packing area, and have the paper towel come up black each time? Do you think that staff throw out loose fruit and veg that falls on the floor but isn't damaged?

I occasionally let my ds 5 sit in the trolley if he’s really tired but I make him takes his shoes off and line the trolley with shopping bags so he’s not in much contact with the it.

Lol no one does this.

Sirzy · 12/04/2024 09:58

Doesn’t bother me from a hygiene POV but does from a safety POV. I have seen children lean over and topple they aren’t designed for someone sitting in the main body of them.

Agree with this.

Children who don't fit in the seats, should not be in the trolleys at all.

My 3.5 year old fits in the seat, but I need it for her 2yo brother. She never stands up in the trolley - she’s usually quietly sat down playing ‘supermarket’ with a couple of items (pretending to scan/weigh them).

(Plus the stuff in the trolley weighs more than she does by the end of the shop!)

Edit to add: this is very child dependent. I am already fully aware that I will not be able to trust DS to sit quietly in the trolley when he is 3.5, as he was delivered to me stuck in ‘kamikaze’ mode and I can’t work out how to factory reset 😆

takealettermsjones · 12/04/2024 11:07

I put my child in the main bit of the shopping trolley because I have a younger child who needs the seat. There used to be trolleys with two child seats next to each other, which my kids would easily fit in, but they all seem to have disappeared. I asked about it a few months ago and it turns out they got rid of most of them and now only have two. This is an enormous supermarket with hundreds of customers... two. So if I manage to get one of them I will use it, otherwise the little one gets strapped in the seat and the big(ger) one goes in the main bit of the trolley, until she can reliably walk alongside.

Cosycover · 12/04/2024 11:07

Yes its really annoying as the trolleys were squeaky clean before the disgusting child got in it. Turns my stomach.

Same! I’m sure there were loads around when I was little (I remember using them!) but they’ve all but disappeared and I’m not traipsing a 2yo and a 3yo around all the trolley parks to find the rogue one still left…

Toddlerteaplease · 12/04/2024 11:09

@Cheepcheepcheep why can't she just walk next to you?

HearTheirEverywhere · 12/04/2024 11:09

I never let my children get in them, but the only thing I’m thinking if I do see a child in one is “ugh please don’t stand up and fall”.
I’ve never considered a trolley clean anyway.

Cheepcheepcheep · 12/04/2024 11:13

Toddlerteaplease · 12/04/2024 11:09

@Cheepcheepcheep why can't she just walk next to you?

We’re usually going on the way home from something else and between ‘I’m tired’ and the length of her legs, it turns a 30m job into a 1h+ job! Plus, she’s at the right height to be basket-height, and even when walking closely next to me she’s had a few baskets knock near her head - people are in their own words and aren’t looking around to see if there’s a 1m child next to them. It’s quicker, easier and (in my view given the above factors) safer to have her in the trolley.

Zippedydoodahday · 12/04/2024 11:17

Meh. The loose fruit and veg may well have been grown using actual poo as fertiliser, so I can't get too excited.

Where on earth do your kids go to school that the floors are covered in vomit? 😂

I must’ve visited a supermarket tens of thousands of times in my life and I’ve never once seen a trolley tip over, where are you shopping?
