Ewwww.....primary school kids in shopping trollies

I may be classed as a pearl clutcher and am prepared to maybe be told so but...

Does anyone else think it really unhygienic when you see primary school children riding in the basket of a shopping trolley? As in dressed in their school uniforms where mum has popped in for a few bits on the way home.

Bless them, been at school all day walking and standing in God knows what - in and out of the loos with possible wee, poo, vomit covered floors, walking by dog poo and possibly stomping in muddy puddles on the way to the shops. 😖

This is where we then put our food....sometimes unpackaged like loose fruit and veg. Yuk!!

Totally out of order and disgusting- that is where I put my FOOD! I went shopping this afternoon and there were several in trollies, shoes on and all. Yep, out of order.

My husband once watched a seagull eat a dead rat in shopping trolley while it was outside the shop.

I wouldn't worry about kids.

Well, hhmmm. Their shoes- where have they walked? Dog poo, and worse.

Can only imagine the outcry if I put my dog in the trolley and she is probably much cleaner.

ladyofshertonabbas · 12/04/2024 21:33

Trolleys are filthy regardless. Kids don’t make much difference.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 12/04/2024 21:26

I say no to my youngest as I know there are people like you who would give me filthy looks all around the supermarket.

I actually find it really sad that you won’t allow your child to sit in a communal trolley based on the opinions of others. Do people not wash their loose fruit and veg?! Ffs, it’s a trolley, it’s not jet washed after every use!

I let my kids sit in the trolley, shoes and all. I’ve never had a dirty look or anything said to me. I can imagine how silly someone would look if they challenged me on my children sitting in a trolley. Is this really what people think about? How ridiculous.

di2004 · 12/04/2024 21:43

I'm with you OP on this, i absolutely hate to see kids sitting fully in the trolley where the shopping should go. It's lazy and unhygienic.
Some supermarkets have little kids trolleys that are great for them pushing round the store, a better option to keep them occupied.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 12/04/2024 21:48

Because toddlers don't toddle about on dirty surfaces, get their hands in all kinds of stuff etc?

I think that would be cute

So a kid gets in a trolley with dog shit on their shoe. Next user of the trolley ends up with dog shit on their shopping and possibly on their hands. But that's OK because Little Precious HAS to sit in the trolley.
Screw everyone else

What world do you live in?! 😂

Have you ever smelt dog shit before? This doesn’t happen. Parents do not let their child walk around with dog shit on their shoe, they would notice. As would the next user of the trolley.

What an extreme example. Is this something you have personally experienced for yourself? If not, how on earth did you come up with this?

DeedlessIndeed · 12/04/2024 22:11

A girl I went to school with had an accident in a supermarket trolley (anyone remember Somerfield supermarkets in the 90's?) where she essentially slammed her face into the metal front. I'm not sure if another trolley banged into theirs or whether it toppled.

She had her adult teeth and lost all of the front ones.

I always think of her when I see a child in a trolley. I know the chances are slim but I could never put my child in one. I don't think I could forgive myself if my child ended up with false teeth because of it!

But I don't think the hygiene argument is particularly strong, as anything unpackaged gets washed or peeled etc.

Itsokish · 12/04/2024 22:19

Oh well . Had my 4 year old grandchild in a trolley today in Sainsburys. Too tired after nursery and terrible cough…didn’t give it any thought about hygiene! All the rats in the car park at night would concern me more TBH but have been supermarket shopping for 40 years and have yet to pick up any nasty bugs.

Mmm, I knew someone who was in a car crash too, ban cars!

Asherrain · 12/04/2024 22:23

Well I let both of mine sit in a trolley and it makes for a very peaceful shopping trip and I've never received a comment or filthy look. This is a weird Mumsnet thing.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 12/04/2024 22:25

You know those trolleys sit outside with pigeons and starlings and seagulls and rats cavorting all over them, right?

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 12/04/2024 22:28

If no one is concerned about the hygiene aspect, because bird poo, rats, rats and mice being in the warehouses etc....why do we so many posts with people absolutely raging at the idea of someone taking their dog in to a shop? I mean, a dog is no less hygienic than rats and other animal shit.
Why is the filthy shoe of a child not equally of great concern?

Saying this as someone who has no desire to take their dog to any shop (other than a pet shop)

DeedlessIndeed · 12/04/2024 22:28

Allfur · 12/04/2024 22:23

Mmm, I knew someone who was in a car crash too, ban cars!

Never said for other people not to, but was just sharing why I would not.
If you read to the bottom, I even disagree with OPs argument!

I would also say that your comment kind of does prove a point though. Yes, lots of people die in car accidents, so the industry acts to improve safety - adding seat belts and airbags etc.

Children get hurt in trolleys, so the stores add guidance that children should be seated only in a particular way (i.e. in the designated seats) or up to a certain weight.

Caswallonthefox · 12/04/2024 22:36

Shirley all your shopping is wrapped up? Even loose fruit and veg? Therefore any scary germs etc, are not touching the food.
Obviously kids above toddlerhood shouldn't be in the trolley because of safety and all that jazz.

Jk987 · 12/04/2024 22:43

Absolutely ridiculous thread!

Itsabusytwoweeks · 12/04/2024 22:46

My 5.5 year old still fits in the front seat part easily, my mum was shocked, it’s not that weird is it?! She’s normal size

gindreams · 12/04/2024 22:54

Ah how I miss ending up a night out in a shopping trolley

Itsabusytwoweeks · 12/04/2024 23:06

😂😂

Bluesandwhites · 12/04/2024 23:14

The handles of shopping trollies and shopping baskets always feel sticky, possibly with all the nose pickers and bottom scratchers, you have reminded me to always clean the handles, however i've noticed some supermarkets, Asda in particular do not provide any sanitiser/blue roll in the foyer like they used to.

Irishmama100 · 12/04/2024 23:29

Omg the loose fruit and veg. The veg that is grown in the ground that the cows shit in. The field mice that run the fields that the veg grows in. The rats in the fields. Honestly I would not worry about the child in the trolley!

BlackeyedSusan · 12/04/2024 23:34

Ssshhhh Nobody tell op where potatoes and carrots come from...nor eggs for that matter!

heavencakes · 13/04/2024 00:10

I'd be more worried about my DC getting dirty from the trolleys to be honest. They often look pretty filthy.

Maybe I'm really lax but my DC don't get changed after school until they need to for a club.

OnHerSolidFoundations · 13/04/2024 04:21

GoodnightAdeline · 12/04/2024 09:52

The trolleys have had food put in and out of them (including loose veg), been sat out in the rain and being shat on by birds and crawled on by insects. I’m sure we will all live.

Probably covered in spider willys too 🤣
