Would you go to exhibition in your own?

One in London I want to see but either no one is interested, or no money and I can't afford to pay for a friend, far this year I've paid for her lunches, and she has never once repaid me, so I've said sorry can't afford it as she would expect me to pay her tube/train too, probably food, yes she has been through a tough time but I'm not loaded, far from it. So I'm going on my own? Is it like going to the cinema on your own, weird?

Not weird to go alone at all! It’s my preference to go solo. But if you want to have a ‘museum’ friend try to attend one of the (usually free) gallery talks or tours and try chatting with someone in the group if you’re feeling confident. That way you can be sure your new chum won’t rely on you to pay for them.

Most museums list these activities on their websites but if you’re not sure what’s on offer you can always call and ask.

Go to the exhibition & enjoy it. Why do you think going to the cinema on your own is weird?

I don’t understand this either. Why is it weird to go to the cinema on your own, as opposed to weird not being able to do things by yourself?

Yes! Why are lone women doing something perceived as weird????
Ridiculous

woodlandtrees · 11/04/2024 07:56

Definitely !

Chrispackhamspoodle · 11/04/2024 07:58

I've put YABU because I go to the cinema and exhibitions on my own all the time and there is nothing wierd about it.In fact it's a massive treat.

Droolylabradors · 11/04/2024 07:59

I'm married and still go to the cinema on my own sometimes or to a gallery.

And in my 20s I spent lots of solo holidays in Paris and Florence and Venice doing the galleries alone. You can whizz through them or spend all the time you like and better still, no one rushes you around the gift shop and cafe.

Wolfpa · 11/04/2024 08:01

Why is it weird to go to the cinema on your own? You are sitting in a dark room not speaking to anyone.

mizu · 11/04/2024 08:02

I recently had my last ever parents evening and had a real sense of liberation Grin

I booked a coach ticket to London and two exhibitions I had wanted to go to for a while.

Went alone. It was bliss.

GreyCarpet · 11/04/2024 08:02

Why would it be weird to do these things on your own?

I've been to music festivals, gigs, dinner etc on my own. Sometimes I've ended up talking to other people, sometimes other people have trying adding me into their group but, honestly, I like to do these things alone.

ItIsEverywhere · 11/04/2024 08:02

Of course you should go.
Plus, going to the cinema on your own isn't weird - if anything, it makes most sense are you are sitting in the dark unable to talk!

Can’t really think of anything where it’s weird to go alone. Riding a tandem maybe.

@BingoMarieHeeler 😂😂😂

StonwEd · 11/04/2024 08:04

Hmm I’ve bitten as well, quite insulting to say going to cinema alone is weird.
This year I’ve been out for dinner a few times on my own, to the cinema, many exhibitions, two comedy gigs and a weekend away on my own. I’ve also flown long haul with my husband, short haul with my sister and gone to see a couple of bands with a group of people. Surely it’s just you do what you fancy doing?
Tbh I prefer an exhibition alone - hate walking at someone else’s pace and would usually wander off and meet up later on if I’m with my husband.
In short, go for it.

OneMoreTime23 · 11/04/2024 08:04

I work in London for half the week. This week I went to a big West End show on my own, a comedy night on my own, a walk in my own. I often go to concerts, the cinema, museums and galleries alone. Why would you think any of that was weird?

TakeMe2Insanity · 11/04/2024 08:06

Go! You’ll love it! There are plenty of places to eat that work alone.

ThePoshUns · 11/04/2024 08:07

I prefer going on my own

ThePoshUns · 11/04/2024 08:08

And I also go to the cinema and theatre on my own. It's not weird.

SevenSeasOfRhye · 11/04/2024 08:08

It would depend how far I was travelling. I don't mind travelling alone but as I do it a lot for work, it's boring and I would prefer a travelling companion for a long journey in my leisure time. It would currently take me about 4 hours to get down to London, not counting onward travel once there, so it would be a 'no'. If it was in my nearest city, I wouldn't think twice about going alone.

Samlewis96 · 11/04/2024 08:08

Why would it be weird going to an exhibition alone? Surely you go to see stuff not gossip with a friend I don't go to cinema ( no subtitles on screen) but wouldn't have any issues to oung there alone either.

I really don't see the issue with the doing stuff you like by yourself ( mind you I solo travel round Asia frequently)

I was in London last week. I went to five art exhibitions, a concert in the Royal Festival Hall, a film, ate well, and spent a lot of lovely time walking around solo. I was actually with DH and DS, and did th8ng with them, obviously, but packed in a lot of solo stuff too.

avocadotofu · 11/04/2024 08:11

Yes definitely!

Crowsruletheworld · 11/04/2024 08:11

Cinema is best on your own, especially if no sits next to you. In fact on the Odeon limitless advert, they make a point of saying cinema alone is the best.
I go loads of places on my own, only thing I get stressed over is food, incase I need to go to toilet and they take my half eaten food/someone takes my seat!

Riverlee · 11/04/2024 08:12

Absolutely fine, and sometimes more enjoyable as you get to stop and look at what you want, and not someone else’s agenda.

When you are there, no one will even notice that you’re wandering around by yourself.

Enjoy!

GCAcademic · 11/04/2024 08:12

MinnieMountain · 11/04/2024 07:54

Where are you @GCAcademic ? I’ve just had a lovely weekend alone in Avignon.

Ooop north, by the sea. Lovely (apart from a couple of gales). Am planning a solo trip to India later in the year. I have a husband but need time by myself to recharge.

Catza · 11/04/2024 08:13

Not weird. I do it all the time. It is actually really lovely and you can take your time without being hurried along by someone else.
I go to theatre and cinema on my own too. Don’t find it weird or sad either.

Maddy70 · 11/04/2024 08:14

I rarely go with friends to galleries and exhibitions i want to go at my own pace. Its perfectly normal

Riverlee · 11/04/2024 08:15

”…and better still, no one rushes you around the gift shop and cafe.”

What is it about a museum gift shop that is so appealing? The items are always overpriced, but there’s something uniquely fascinating about them.
