Are you offended by this - I am

Skim read it but the picture is a giveaway.

For the record, I do not belong to this religion but I am still offended by it as I respect most religions (not the extreme elements of any)
Importantly, I'm no regular worshipper IE I dont go to our place of worship unless there is a wedding/etc/etc but I do believe there is one a lot higher than us

So I'm offended as there is no need for this kind of thing. Stuff like this applied to some other religion can often result in big problems

AIBU to feel that this kind of then should be made unlawful?

(I am aware that policing such a law would have many challenges but it is how I feel as we have enough upset in the world and do not need this type of behaviour. I'm often the first to say, live and let live if within the law but at times laws need re-visiting. IMO.

NB: I'm not having a go at this singer as many have done the same or worse, but as she his high-profile, IMO it needs to be discussed as I cant understand why she and others do this

Rihanna is SLAMMED by Catholics for VERY provocative magazine cover

Rihanna ruffled some religious feathers while dressed as a sexy nun on the cover of  Interview Magazine's latest issue.

I'm a smidge confused at you choosing 'Property/DIY' as the ideal space to discuss this...

WinterMorn · 09/04/2024 20:27

I am offended at just about everything this notorious poster says.

WinterDeWinter · 09/04/2024 20:27

Also confused by property/DIY but..

I think this is Rihanna riffing off drag (Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence) rather than a direct sexualisation of Catholicism.

I hate it, because I hate queer theory and it's narrative that all transgression is revolutionary.

But I would never, ever want it to be outlawed. Religion is not a universal good, still wields enormous power in many communities, and it often needs satirising.

I respect your right to practice your religion, but I refuse to respect the religion simply because it is such.

Why is this posted in property/ DIY?

Apologies, wrong forum. Should have been as per my OP

I'm not personally offended as I'm an agnostic, but I can see how could be offensive to some Christians, especially Roman Catholics. It's tasteless, tacky and unoriginal into the bargain.

Good post and I hear you but one I disagree with in this instance. Thanks

As per my OP, I'm not of those religions but IMO there should be a limit of what is allowed and what is not.

I am an atheist and detest all religions so this does not offend me but I agree with the point you make about it being acceptable to mock some religions but not others. Presumably in part because of fear of reprisals from the most extreme members of that religion.
Mock all of them is the way to go for me.

I thought you were going to post about a Chapel being flipped into a house or something.

And just like that... it was moved 😂

Being offended isn’t damaging. Believing that you have the right to never be offended, which is the same as saying you have the right to never have to question your own motives and beliefs, is extraordinarily damaging.

weve somehow sleep walked into this place where “hate crime “ is a frequently used method of shutting down debate. Do you think that there’s less acrimony and division in the world because the weirdos aren’t allowed to spout their bile? No, I think there’s a lot more. The only time these extreme opinions are voiced is when there’s nobody there to disagree, and it’s that (now missing) feedback that makes people think and moderate their views.

a good example is right here on mumsnet a few weeks ago, somebody started a thread about corporal punishment being beneficial. It was deleted very quickly, but not before a number of people jumped in to tell the poster just how vile they thought she was.

Result? Instead of getting roundly condemned in public, which would have made her question her own views, this idiot was given good reason to believe she’d been silenced for trying to tell an inconvenient truth, and probably holds those horrible opinions harder than ever.

We need to stop silencing our loonies and start debating and confronting them. Quite apart from which, as the gender critical amongst us are learning, if you can silence other people then other people can silence you.

Also, this isn’t offensive. I’’m sure any omnipotent, omniscient deity worth their salt won’t be weeping in a corner over a poster.

Walkingwithdinosaurs · 09/04/2024 20:45

Yeah she’s not fond of Catholics, remember the time she stripped of naked in a farmers field in Ireland?!

Thank you but i never said it was ok to mock some religions and not the others but I see where you are coming from.

I'm offended but not from the religion, possibly offended by the very fact, why do people have to insult religions to get into the papers and hurt peoples feelings.

However, I am offended as some things should not be offended like this

IMO, its very distasteful and insulting and was there a real need for here to do this, IMHO, no!

There are actually lots of valid reasons to mock religions and I believe all religions should be mocked, including the ones that may respond with violence.

Religion holds far too much power in this world. It oppresses and controls women, it stands in the way of freedom of faith or lack of faith in many places, it influences politics, again to the detriment of women and LGBT people. It is religion that has given us the hateful laws that are in place in many countries like Uganda, where one cannot love as one wishes for fear of persecution by the law. Religion should be called out every day for not speaking out, not searching its own heart and not accepting people as they are. A nun with lipstick on doesn't begin to offend me; the gay hate laws of Uganda and the Magdalen Laundries do.

It isn't about getting in the papers in most cases; the fact that one celeb is using mockery this way is neither here not there. Mocking religion is an essential driver for social change.

I'jj take your word for it.

However, in a simplistic manner it sounds great. Given a moments thought, it does sound very wrong.

EG: I'm offended by seeing a XL Bully dragging its owner alonge the pavement face down whislt the dog is trying to attack a cat. Tha t would offend me and is against the law and therefore its not just my "problem" but a problem for the law abiding people like me and the police officers.

I agree with absolutely everything @pointythings says. There is a rising problem in the UK at present with anti-blasphemy extremists (of all things). Making fun of religion, and all other bulwarks of the social order, is how society changes and grows.

pointythings · 09/04/2024 20:58

You're conflating 'criminal offense' with 'Offended of Tunbridge Wells'. I would hope you understand the difference.

An XL bully dragging its owner is not going to catch up with an escaping cat, by the way. They're like lightning when they want to be (I have 5 and they have vet checkups, so I know).

the religious connotations don't bother me at all, I’m more concerned with the sexualisation of women.

That’s not being offended though, is it? That’s not what offence means. To be offended is ‘to be resentful or annoyed, typically as the result of a perceived insult’. An XL bully trying to attack a cat isn’t an insult to you. Also, is ‘resentful’ or ‘annoyed’ are unlikely to be what you’d feel in that scenario… more disgusted, or even scared, I’d have thought. Offended doesn’t just mean a blanket ‘feel negatively about’.
