Skim read it but the picture is a giveaway.

For the record, I do not belong to this religion but I am still offended by it as I respect most religions (not the extreme elements of any)
Importantly, I'm no regular worshipper IE I dont go to our place of worship unless there is a wedding/etc/etc but I do believe there is one a lot higher than us

So I'm offended as there is no need for this kind of thing. Stuff like this applied to some other religion can often result in big problems

AIBU to feel that this kind of then should be made unlawful?

(I am aware that policing such a law would have many challenges but it is how I feel as we have enough upset in the world and do not need this type of behaviour. I'm often the first to say, live and let live if within the law but at times laws need re-visiting. IMO.

NB: I'm not having a go at this singer as many have done the same or worse, but as she his high-profile, IMO it needs to be discussed as I cant understand why she and others do this

Rihanna is SLAMMED by Catholics for VERY provocative magazine cover

Rihanna ruffled some religious feathers while dressed as a sexy nun on the cover of  Interview Magazine's latest issue.

I’m offended at how bad the creative team have made Rihanna look.

Provocative nuns have been doing the rounds on everything from pornos to horror films forever. I am this religion and it’s just boring to me.

The blame is with no one but the person that is jumping around in that outfit. She is an adult and one old enough to know better

I still dont understand why she did it.

Regarding the law in Uganda, it wasn't passed by the church. The recent document from the Catholic church says this: 55. The Church wishes, first of all, “to reaffirm that every person, regardless of sexual orientation, ought to be respected in his or her dignity and treated with consideration, while ‘every sign of unjust discrimination’ is to be carefully avoided, particularly any form of aggression and violence.”[101] For this reason, it should be denounced as contrary to human dignity the fact that, in some places, not a few people are imprisoned, tortured, and even deprived of the good of life solely because of their sexual orientation.

https://press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/en/bollettino/pubblico/2024/04/08/240408c.html

The costume reminds me of a friend, a nun in Africa, saying a few years ago that the women in her congregation no longer dared to wear their habits because of the myth that sex with (ie raping) a virgin cures AIDS

So I wouldn't waste energy getting indignant about a ninny like Rihanna, there are much worse things happening in the world.

pointythings · 10/04/2024 18:10

@DeanElderberry the law in Uganda was passed by its government, but they have invoked religion in claiming that the bill protects 'traditional and religious values'. You're right in saying it is nothing to do with the Catholic Church; rather it has been strongly influenced by extreme American evangelicals who come from the Protestant tradition.

They should still be challenged at every turn.

DysmalRadius · 10/04/2024 18:14

In terms of offensive acts on the part of the entities involved in this debate, I suspect Rihanna will struggle to reach the tally that the Catholic church has amassed even if she dresses as a nun every day for the rest of her life.

It does look a bit like someone’s let their toddler loose with the make-up kit, doesn’t it?

So I should hope, given that the Catholic Church has been around for nearly 2,000 years and currently has more than 1,300,000,000 members. She'd need to be be very busy.

aesopsgables · 10/04/2024 18:25

It's your right to be offended by whatever you want to be offended by - but the part in the OP where you say 'AIBU to feel that this kind of then should be made unlawful?' is unreasonable. Like it or not we live in a largely secular society that believes in freedom of speech and this falls under than in terms of artistic expression.

DeanElderberry · 10/04/2024 18:40

America has a right to freedom of speech. The UK doesn't. Neither has Ireland. Not sure about other countries.

Blame for what?

It was a business decision.

I was watching the news as we finished our dinner.
They were talking about this subject as in the OP

However, they showed an advert from Italy and many millions of people are up in arms re this crisp advert

The link is not from the respcted tv news channle as i could not see it but from a respected newspaper

And? Catholics also do not have the right to go through life not being offended.

I note that you have not answered my point about the dangers of blasphemy laws, and the nature of those countries which currently have them.

Fucking hell, are skinny eyebrows back???!!

Mine have only just recovered from the 90s 😱

TeaAndTattoos · 10/04/2024 20:04

I’m a Roman Catholic and I’m not getting the offence to this I don’t get why your making such a big deal out of it.

EveryoneJapan · 10/04/2024 20:05

It doesn’t offend me but even if it did, hey ho, I don’t have the right not to be offended.

It is pretty dull as attempts to shock go; it’s been done a million times. Surprised she couldn’t come up with something more original.

I also agree with the double-standard noted above. Some religions get this all the time, but I don’t see other religions receiving similar treatment?

Lonelycrab · 10/04/2024 20:06

She’s just a-tench-ion seeking I think. Public can see through this carp.

CampsieGlamper · 10/04/2024 20:19

Is it a Roman Catholic nuns habit? Or is it a hijab? Is she saying "hey Muslims lighten up? Yo, move with the times? " Has she got the guts to say to Muslims that they should embrace her, or challenge some of their religion?

I'jj take your word for it.

However, in a simplistic manner it sounds great. Given a moments thought, it does sound very wrong.

EG: I'm offended by seeing a XL Bully dragging its owner alonge the pavement face down whislt the dog is trying to attack a cat. Tha t would offend me and is against the law and therefore its not just my "problem" but a problem for the law abiding people like me and the police officers.

I'm offended by seeing a XL Bully dragging its owner

Not sure thats the right use of words there, offended? More like outraged? or horrified?

Liv999 · 11/04/2024 10:23

I'm Catholic and I'm not offended by this whatsoever, each to their own

IvorTheEngineDriver · 11/04/2024 10:29

Not in the slightest.
