Are you offended by this - I am

Skim read it but the picture is a giveaway.

For the record, I do not belong to this religion but I am still offended by it as I respect most religions (not the extreme elements of any)
Importantly, I'm no regular worshipper IE I dont go to our place of worship unless there is a wedding/etc/etc but I do believe there is one a lot higher than us

So I'm offended as there is no need for this kind of thing. Stuff like this applied to some other religion can often result in big problems

AIBU to feel that this kind of then should be made unlawful?

(I am aware that policing such a law would have many challenges but it is how I feel as we have enough upset in the world and do not need this type of behaviour. I'm often the first to say, live and let live if within the law but at times laws need re-visiting. IMO.

NB: I'm not having a go at this singer as many have done the same or worse, but as she his high-profile, IMO it needs to be discussed as I cant understand why she and others do this

Rihanna is SLAMMED by Catholics for VERY provocative magazine cover

Rihanna ruffled some religious feathers while dressed as a sexy nun on the cover of  Interview Magazine's latest issue.

Unless you were offended on behalf of the cat, I suppose.

That’s not being offended though, is it? That’s not what offence means. To be offended is ‘to be resentful or annoyed, typically as the result of a perceived insult’. An XL bully trying to attack a cat isn’t an insult to you. Also, is ‘resentful’ or ‘annoyed’ are unlikely to be what you’d feel in that scenario… more disgusted, or even scared, I’d have thought. Offended doesn’t just mean a blanket ‘feel negatively about’.

You have a point but let me put it another way. I am offended by the very fact what some clowns have done to their pets and the way they treat them

I'm also offended when standing to pay at the till in a supermarket when some loud person is on their mobile and then delays paying at the till

If I'm offended, trust me, I'm offended.

When I see others offended for no reason at all like this link I have posted, I'm even more offended and think, why on earth do you have to behave like this

I’m offended by the link to the Daily Mail

pointythings · 09/04/2024 21:18

I haven't got the energy to go through life perpetually offended. OP, you may find the Serenity Prayer gelpful. I'm an atheist, but the sentiments remain and following them is soooo much better for the blood pressure.

KrisAkabusi · 09/04/2024 21:19

There are actually lots of valid reasons to mock religions and I believe all religions should be mocked, including the ones that may respond with violence.

Religion holds far too much power in this world. It oppresses and controls women, it stands in the way of freedom of faith or lack of faith in many places, it influences politics, again to the detriment of women and LGBT people. It is religion that has given us the hateful laws that are in place in many countries like Uganda, where one cannot love as one wishes for fear of persecution by the law. Religion should be called out every day for not speaking out, not searching its own heart and not accepting people as they are. A nun with lipstick on doesn't begin to offend me; the gay hate laws of Uganda and the Magdalen Laundries do.

Hear hear!

And in response to those things that you’re offended by, I repeat the above… no one has the right to not be offended.

PrincessTeaSet · 09/04/2024 21:33

Well it's not to my taste but the sexy nun thing is hardly original.

The daily mail obviously approve, and by extension think their readers will, otherwise they wouldn't print the pictures. And the DM has the biggest readership of any UK paper. So it can't be that outrageous

EffortlesslyInelegant · 09/04/2024 21:41

"If I'm offended, trust me, I'm offended"

I don't trust you. At all. I am highly unlikely to ever be affected by your being offended by anything but the idea that you might be pleases me greatly.

TotHappy · 09/04/2024 22:09

It's offensive not because it serialised Christianity but because it sexualises/objectifies women AGAIN.
The sexy nun thing is like the heterosexual man's lesbian porn: here's a woman who says she doesn't want me, she needs nothing from me, she's not interested. My ultimate fantasy is her actually, SECRETLY being well into me because she MUST be!
Ugh.

Don't see so many centre spreads of sexy monks, do you?

WinterMorn · 09/04/2024 20:27

I am offended at just about everything this notorious poster says.

Yes there's an unvarying track record there.

Minion21 · 10/04/2024 11:19

I think this image is an offence to intelligence and good taste. And I'm saying it as an atheist. Not sure what point Rihanna is trying to make, she only manages to look very stupid.

Constantly awful.

It shouldn't be illegal but her taste/judgement is so, so bad.

And there is an odd religious double standard where this is allowed but I'm not sure her wearing a hijab or turban would happen without backlash from the people who think tilhis is good.

Surprisedbuthappy · 10/04/2024 11:48

Meh, nothing worse than Madonna was doing 40 years ago!

ScholesPanda · 10/04/2024 12:00

I'm a regular church-goer and I'm not offended in the slightest.

We shouldn't be making things illegal on the grounds they might cause mild offence to someone.

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 10/04/2024 12:10

Blackcats7 · 09/04/2024 20:40

I am an atheist and detest all religions so this does not offend me but I agree with the point you make about it being acceptable to mock some religions but not others. Presumably in part because of fear of reprisals from the most extreme members of that religion.
Mock all of them is the way to go for me.

@Blackcats7 it is acceptable to mock every religion, no one has the right to not be offended. We should not relinquish our precious freedoms.

Strugglingtodomybest · 10/04/2024 12:21

Why exactly are you offended by it?

I think they should all be mockable - but also I think it's difficult to mock part of another culture's religion without potentially coming across as racist.

Many forms of Christianity are part of our culture, the iconography is part of our culture and have been used in ways Christians have found offensive by many artists.

I feel she felt she needed to get into the media spotlight again. I wonder what people will start doing once this becomes the norm and press ignores.
It's not nice, its not clever and for the record, I will never listen or watch this wana be big time whatever it is she does.

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator there are many countries which have laws against this sort of thing.

They are not examples we should wish to follow. Free speech is precious.

You make a valid point. Just had a quick Google, and this Modona was much, much worse and diff it a few times.

I'm still unsure why women like them feel they need to do this.
I could never impagine Oliva Newton- John doing this, God rest her sole, nor Cilla, God rest her sole and Lulu.

Why do you think some singers do this and other would never dream of it.

Did she even like fish?

IAmAnIdiot123 · 10/04/2024 14:49

Don't like it, don't look at it.

It's a bit naff but it doesn't offend me. If it did, I don't think giving it free advertisement would be my first action.

pointythings · 10/04/2024 16:14

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator are you OK? I mean 'Modona' and 'sole'?

Mocking religion is almost as old as religion itself. It's human nature to mock powerful institutions, and a good thing too.

Ever heard the song 'Monkey Business' by Nik Kershaw?
