I keep getting sick šŸ¤’

PurpleRayne89 · 09/04/2024 10:43

I had 11 bouts of illness last year, flu, Covid, colds and even Strep throat several times and Scarlett fever. I have a 2.5 year old. I’m not sure why I keep getting so sick. This year alone I’ve been unwell every month, twice in march and now I have a sore throat, maybe strep again.

does this sound normal? anyone with similar scenario?

bit worried !

Get some good vitamins/ probiotics
Wash your hands frequently- especially when you’ve been in public ( touching baskets / trolleys / escalators in shops etc )
Eat a healthy diet/ lots of fruit and vegetables and drink lots of water

Also might be worth checking in with your GP: having some bloods taken etc to check your blood counts.

Hope you feel better soon

Also.. does your 2 year old go to Nursery? They could be passing on the germs from there ..

Be vigilant with their hand hygiene ( as hard as it is at that age but everything will enter their mouth ) etc

Greentomatoes21 · 09/04/2024 10:51

I'm the same. It's awful! I teach 4-5 year olds and have an 8 and 3 year old at home. I put it down to that. But it's so hard catching things so frequently. I take lots of vitmains and had a 4 week spell recently where I felt great. Today I feel viral symptoms coming on. 😪

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 09/04/2024 10:51

Have you got long-covid?

AyeupDuck · 09/04/2024 11:02

Crikey you poor thing that is a lot, I had 3 bouts of illness that required meds and thought that was a lot. Ear infection, nasty virus flu type thing and an infection in my finger.

I am attempting to eat more variety of fruit and veg, I read how just 5 a day may be good but that if it’s the same 5 a day it’s less good. It says to aim for 30 fruit, veg, seeds a week. I have also started popping vitamin tablets like smarties. They are really cheap from places like Home Bargains.

Stress lowers your immune system and I had a lot of stress last year when DS GF was nearly killed in a car accident, MIL is showing early sign of dementia and had a horrific meltdown at me, a couple of friends are getting divorced, the husband had an affair, my friend really suffered. I felt so upset for her, she is doing better now. I also had to deal with DH sister and one of my sisters is so unwell she may likely die, her pain levels are hard to control as well and she has become very disabled, that’s has weighed very heavily on me. None of these things are in my control and I felt and do still feel very powerless.

Belatedeyebrows · 09/04/2024 11:08

I'm the same! I've been ill every week since February just got over a cold that turned into a sinus infection.
I'm so fed up.
On the tail end of the sinus infection now but still so tired if I do anything slightly strenuous and my neck glands are still swollen.
I've changed my diet, drink more vit c and take other vits.
Finding the 5 a day hard due to costs but know I'm only ill due to stressful job (teaching in an SEMH School) and looking after my 5 and 3 year old.
Grateful for the Easter break (but sad that I've not been able to do anything.)
Hope it get better for you soon op.

I work in education and every holiday I get sick- viruses, colds, cold sores and also anxiety.
im a healthy weight, eat well and get plenty of exercise
My bloods are all fine.
im taking it as a sign to look after myself more- more supplements, more water and even better nutrition and mostly, looking for another job. I think the stress is doing me in.
I hope you’re ok OP maybe get some bloods done and look at your stress levels

I have a 2.5 year old. I’m not sure why I keep getting so sick

These two things are linked!

I don't have children, don't work with children or hang out with children and so despite working in healthcare would expect about 2 colds a year.

The 2.5 year old is the reason you keep getting sick. I am assuming he/she has other redeeming features such as being very lovable Grin

peakygold · 09/04/2024 11:53

Did you have the covid jabs? Apparently they completely messed up immune systems. (We didn't have any of them, so I can't relate).

Covid lowers immunity- known since 2021. https://covid19.nih.gov/news-and-stories/severe-covid-19-may-cause-long-term-immune-system-changes#:~:text=In%20a%20small%20study%20supported,off%20in%20certain%20stem%20cells. Didn't they tell you about all this or offered immunity tests? https://primaryimmune.org/understanding-primary-immunodeficiency/diagnosis/laboratory-tests#:~:text=The%20standard%20screening%20tests%20for,tests%20for%20specific%20antibody%20production. Professor Stephen Griffin gives a lot of advice on Twitter and did this throughout the pandemic

Severe COVID-19 May Cause Long-Term Immune System Changes

Researchers found changes in gene expression in the stem cells that produce innate immune response.

How’s everyone feeling now? There really seems to be more viruses around this year.

PurpleRayne89 · 13/05/2024 17:12

@Cloud44 so far so good but I don’t want to jinx it. I had strep and just finished a 10 day course of antibiotics. They’ve usually prescribed a 5 days course and this is apparently any it keeps returning as a 10 day course is standard. I’m hoping that’s the end of my strep throat days for at least a few years. Do you have the same issue in regards to continuing to become sick?

Hi Op

Many thanks for sharing the update. I am pleased for you and hope you are on the road to long-term good health

I literally had to double check the name to make sure I hadn’t posted under a different alias. EVERYTHING you say, including antibiotics for strep, and the 2.5 year old, and the 11 viruses is identical to me. I feel so achey and Ill all the time and too exhausted to do anything outside the house with DD because of it. It’s horrible and cruel.

PurpleRayne89 · 20/05/2024 08:45

@Cloxs Sorry to hear this is also your experience. It’s awful isn’t it.

Thought I’d revive this thread to see how everyone’s doing. I found this in a search. I am trying to count how many times I’ve been unwell this year and I think it’s about seven or eight. Three bouts of flu, three or four bad colds, one stomach bug. I have always been prone to catching flu viruses, but this is beyond anything I’ve experienced. I’ve had a lung scan which was clear. I’ve had blood tests and I have low iron reserves. Nothing else has shown up. I honestly can’t understand it.

I was going to say this! It’s because you have a 2.5 yr old.

Even if they’re not at nursery, they will mix with other kids / adults everywhere you go and pick up everything. Then they pass it on to you. Worse if at nursery though.

Then also you’ll be tired so your immune system will low too

It’s the low iron reserves.

Mine were fairly low, I started taking ferrous sulfate (far stronger than normal iron tablets and you can get them without a prescription) and the difference after a few weeks was immense. This winter, beating in mind how brutal it has been for viruses (and how ill I used to get) I have been around people with flu, colds and vomiting bugs and I have not been ill ONCE

Less than optimum vit D can cause this too.

Also, have you looked at the blood test results yourself? GPs are notoriously shit at diagnosing deficiencies as the lower end of what’s considered ā€˜normal’ in things like Ferritin, Vit D, B12 and folate can still present with symptoms. You need to get levels up to ā€˜optimal’
