Itsneversimpleisit · 09/04/2024 09:58

Is it a lot?

Twenty minutes there in the morning, twenty minutes home.
Twenty minutes there in the afternoon, twenty minutes walk back

With a 5 year old

Is it a lot or average?

I did the same with my 5 year old so to me its perfectly reasonable/normal. Combined with stopping snacking I lost half a stone between September when DC started Year R & mid November (so in about 2 months no other changes just the school run) so yes you might lose weight!

LaDamaDeElche · 10/04/2024 20:24

I had a job once where I'd go home for lunch most days, so the same as you - two sets of 20 mins brisk walking. I lost around 3/4 of a stone from all the walking!

Keeper11 · 10/04/2024 20:24

So you live about a mile from the school? Not sure what your post is about. Are you actually complaining about having to walk a mile to school? I think you will find this is pretty normal and envied by a lot of parents who live a lot further away and have to either pay for transport costs or battle with the school run and the attendant parking problems. It can be grim in dire weather, but otherwise enjoy your time in the fresh air.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/04/2024 20:32

I have a toddler and we walk after dinner or in the afternoon after nap/snack time for an hour. We walk the neighbourhood which includes hills. It's quite do-able!

Shanda5 · 10/04/2024 20:35

I do roughly the same. 20 mins with DC, 12 without. I don't think it's far at all.

dancingdiva12 · 10/04/2024 20:39

We do 25 min walk each way. I’d definitely get a scooter for tired days. I’d also agree that it’s a lovely time to chat. I seem to get more info about there day on the walk.

Daisyblue77 · 10/04/2024 20:42

I think its normal and really healthy exercise

stichguru · 10/04/2024 20:43

bridgetreilly · 09/04/2024 09:59

I would think that’s quite a lot. Why are they coming home at lunchtime?

They aren't I don't think - walk is for the parent taking the child then walking home. Then walking to fetch the child, and walking home!

PetuniaT · 10/04/2024 20:45

You should move to within 5 minutes away and then buy a Range Rover for the school run !

Sorry, bit confusing, they stay at school at lunch.

So 40 minutes total walk for me there and back in the morning
40 minutes walk for me there and back in the afternoon

20 minutes there in the morning for Dd
20 minutes back in the afternoon for Dd

That's fine. He'd take more steps during a trip to the park. My son walks the same distance to school.

Swiftsmith · 10/04/2024 20:49

Sounds great to me!

gertrudemortimer · 10/04/2024 20:50

We had a similar walk from age 4 until 7 when I started driving. It was uphill the whole way and just under a mile! You will definitely lose weight I noticed weight gain once I was driving. Invest in a strong umbrella too

Brimfulofasha21 · 10/04/2024 21:05

I have to do it 6 x a day now as have a toddler in the nursery to and they have stopped the public bus doing that route. About 27 minutes for me, probably around 40 on the 2 trips with the older kids. I don't mind it. But the constant fucking rain is doing my head in.

TeamGeriatric · 10/04/2024 21:08

We have 400 metres to walk to get the youngests school, we are still often jogging/power walking into the playground as the bell is ringing for the start of the day. I guess you just get way more organised if you know you've got a 25 minute walk to do.

Righteouswarrior · 10/04/2024 21:15

I think that walk is very short in comparison to what I did when my DD was that age. I don't drive and there was no public transport on the route to their school which was a 45 min walk each way for me. With DD in tow about an hour, so for me a total of 3.5 hours walking a day. My DD managed as well although sometimes she had a scooter that helped speed her up a bit.

ColdWaterDipper · 10/04/2024 21:19

I’m confused by several things - why are you walking there and back for lunchtime if your child is staying at school? I never went in to eat lunch / supervise while my children had their lunches at school - is this something you like to
do or need to do? Also, 4x 20 mins is 1hr20 mins isn’t it? Or are you walking back quicker because your child isn’t with you. We have a 30
min walk to school (on my non-working days) and it’s absolutely fine. Just make sure to put waterproofs and wellies on your child on very rainy days and change quickly as you arrive at school. I drive on my working days as it’s 3.5 miles by road and I can’t waste the time as need to get back to start work. On non-working days we drive down to the nearest village and walk across the fields to school (about 1.5 miles).

CynicalToad · 10/04/2024 21:23

20 minutes each way really shouldn't be considered a long way to walk to school but depressingly I suspect it's above average. The vast majority of people I see who live more than 15 minutes walk away seem to drive. I think the walk to school is a great opportunity to chat to the kids and it seems to get them going for the day.

If you find it's eating too much time then the obvious solution is to cycle. Bike trailers are great for taking younger kids or if you're worried about traffic. Cycling to school and back with an 8 year old on a bike and a 5 year old in a trailer takes me less than half the time it does to walk.

1daughterand3sons · 10/04/2024 21:34

When our DD started school she could have gone to a school that was 3mins walk away but we choose to send her to a school that was a 20 minute walk instead. It never did her any harm she loves to walk now at age 17

I have to drive as live 7 miles away but my fit bit picks up a ten minute walk from driving and taking my kids onto playground. So it’s only ten mins more for your child. You may have to walk home; why do they?

poppyslashtulip · 10/04/2024 21:53

Average for us (actually slightly more at 2 hours). In all weather. Our dog loves it.

Perfect amount of daily exercise.

Iwantamarshmallowman · 10/04/2024 21:56

for us, this is totally normal. School is 1.3 miles from home. We walk every day. With the kids, it takes 20-30 mins, and on my own about 15-20. I love it. thr kids are getting an hour a day exercise, and I'm doing about 4/5 miles. if i dont, so the school run in the morning, I'm cranky and struggle to get motervated.

Angrywife · 10/04/2024 21:58

20 minute walk is an average mile.
The DFE considers 2 miles to be a reasonable distance for a child under 8 to walk to school.
3 miles over 8.
So you walking 1 mile is absolutely fine.

Itsneversimpleisit · 10/04/2024 22:28
