Is it a lot?

Twenty minutes there in the morning, twenty minutes home.
Twenty minutes there in the afternoon, twenty minutes walk back

With a 5 year old

Is it a lot or average?

I would think that’s quite a lot. Why are they coming home at lunchtime?

Backtoreality1 · 09/04/2024 10:00

Sounds average to me.....don't they stay in at lunchtime? 20 minutes walk to/from school doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

dirtyblond · 09/04/2024 10:00

sounds lovely. And totally normal, or less than normal

idontlikealdi · 09/04/2024 10:01

Within the realms of normal. Are they coming home at lunch or are you counting for you walking back after drop off?

Linedbook · 09/04/2024 10:01

So the 5yo is only doing 20 mins x 2?

I think that's OK, not particularly practical if you have a job to get to, but otherwise I'd combine it with some errands and treat it as a great opportunity for daily exercise. I walk about the same amount during my daily commute.

ZipZapZoom · 09/04/2024 10:01

Twenty minutes there in the morning and twenty minutes home again sounds pretty normal but why are they coming home and going back again in the middle of the day?

Haydenn · 09/04/2024 10:01

So the child is just doing 2x 20 minute trips, and the adult 4 of them? Sounds very doable and healthy to me

dirtyblond · 09/04/2024 10:01

Many children grow up with nothing like enough walking in their daily routine. A regular daily walk is very good for them, physically and mentally, and a great habit to get into for the future

JulietSierra · 09/04/2024 10:02

Is your 5 year old doing the four twenty minute journeys or is it just you on two of them? If it’s just walking there in the morning and then coming home at tea time I think that’s fine for a five year old. A twenty minute walk isn’t at all out of the ordinary for commuting to school.

MumChp · 09/04/2024 10:02

Why x 4? You?

X 2 is average for a child.

A school run on 20 minutes by foot is great.

Itsneversimpleisit · 09/04/2024 10:03

Sorry, bit confusing, they stay at school at lunch.

So 40 minutes total walk for me there and back in the morning
40 minutes walk for me there and back in the afternoon

20 minutes there in the morning for Dd
20 minutes back in the afternoon for Dd

Is it your 20 minutes or their’s? It takes me just under 15 minutes to get to school (I can do it less than 10 when I have to 😂). It obviously takes a little longer for dc. When dc was in reception the walk home would take over half and hour, so more than double what it took me alone. It was doable (and we did it every day), but it did make those early days long for him.

thecomingbrave · 09/04/2024 10:04

It's fine, I don't understand the question really.

That's completely normal, although I suspect it won't actually take you 20 minutes to do the walk without the child?

zurg123 · 09/04/2024 10:04

2 20 minute walks for a 5 year old is fine.

DeedlessIndeed · 09/04/2024 10:06

I'd say that is normal, no?

GauntJudy · 09/04/2024 10:06

That's fine, quite nice to be able to make moderate exercise part of your daily routine.

mynameiscalypso · 09/04/2024 10:06

Is it 20mins at adult pace or child pace? My 5 year old is a bit of a dawdler so a 20 min walk might well take them longer. Also, make sure they go for a wee before they leave school in the afternoon.

TimesChangeAgain · 09/04/2024 10:07

Sounds fine to me, potentially a pain if you need to work. Realistically most people who drive their kids will have to leave at least 20 mins to account for traffic.

The walk on your own will probably be considerably quicker than with the 5 year old…

What’s the point of the question? You think it’s too close/far?

Hankunamatata · 09/04/2024 10:07

It's fine.

bridgetreilly · 09/04/2024 10:08

Oh, in that case, completely normal.

Itsneversimpleisit · 09/04/2024 10:09

Timed it today and it was around 24 minutes with Dd and 17 minutes just me walking

Just wondering if others did similar as I’m quite lazy and found it quite annoying! 😂

This is the walk I have to do the school run for our primary school. It's absolutely fine. I enjoy it Smile

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 09/04/2024 10:10

I don't think that's unreasonable tbh, though obviously less pleasant in less pleasant weather!
Is there a school nearer which you couldn't get into? Are you looking for some sort of 'solution' to this or do you just want to let off some steam?
