Is it a lot?

Twenty minutes there in the morning, twenty minutes home.
Twenty minutes there in the afternoon, twenty minutes walk back

With a 5 year old

Is it a lot or average?

I think it’s ok/normal op & much preferable then driving.

The school we are hoping dc gets into is 1.2 miles away, it’s about a 30 min walk both ways at a slightly slower pace. So an hour for dc and approx 2 hours a day for me (whilst pushing a stroller with toddler dc)

I’m actually looking forward to it, the chats, the walk itself is a nice route (maybe not on rainy days😖) Dd is a good walker & it will be good for me and dc 2 too.

The potential weight loss and increase to fitness is a bonus!

Runssometimes · 09/04/2024 10:24

Perfect length of walk. Unless you change diet not enough to lose weight but walking for more than an hour a day has been proven to extend your life expectancy. So enjoy it and the chance to catch up with your child and notice the seasons change. If you’re worried about the time and the route is ok, bike would be a lot faster.

budgiegirl · 09/04/2024 10:24

It's fine, but can be a pain in bad weather. Could you cycle/scoot some days to mix things up? My kids used to roller skate to school sometimes as well (not me though! Although I would happily scooter home)

baklavagoddess · 09/04/2024 10:24

My dc do this and we manage fine, for me it's 2 hours total walking a day and for the dc it's an hour

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 09/04/2024 10:25

I used to do the same but 30 minutes.. walking my eldest to infants pushing a pram.

dirtyblond · 09/04/2024 10:18

do you combine the walk to school with the dog walk?

Sorry to derail the thread but please don't do this.

So many at my DDs school do and it's a nightmare as she is frightened of dogs (due to a nasty incident when she was small). It not just that though, people leave them tied up outside the gates and they wee everywhere, bark incessantly, lay all over the pavement. Awful.

StoneWaterWheel · 09/04/2024 10:27

Dc's school had a scoot to school campaign and scooter storage at school so no lugging it back home with you. My walk was 12 minutes to school. I would try to make it a regular thing over the next few months so your child gets used to it especially as you will be time constrained unlike when you walked to the shops.

WitchWithoutChips · 09/04/2024 10:28

What am I missing? That is fine and very normal.

Why does the dog need a separate walk...?

SBHon · 09/04/2024 10:29

Fellow part lazy person here. I find walking annoying too if I don’t have headphones with me. If I’m listening to an audiobook or podcast then I don’t mind it at all.

TeaAndStrumpets · 09/04/2024 10:29

Are you the only family walking that route? We always used to have someone to walk with, more so the afternoons. It's sometimes a nice way to meet people.

Rewis · 09/04/2024 10:29

I hate waking. I'd cycle the distances what I do by my self if at all possible. But in general 20min walk to school is normal.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 09/04/2024 10:30

This was my normal daily school run as the school was just over a mile away. The kids then used their micro scooters so we got the time down to 15 mins each way . I carried the scooters home with me and then carried them back for pick up.

It's obviously nothing for a healthy and fit adult to do that much walking but if you are worried it's too much your 5 year old then a scooter is a good option.

CaterhamReconstituted · 09/04/2024 10:31

This is about what I do. It’s about normal I think.

Ultra75 · 09/04/2024 10:31

Totally normal. Both our DS have walked that everyday, in fact the youngest did an extra trip whilst he was at nursery. It’s great, we get lots of talking time and often take detours on the way home. They both don’t think twice about walking anywhere now, in fact we hardly use the car at all for local journeys.

Superscientist · 09/04/2024 10:32

I'm counting down the days to September when I swap a 10-12 minute drive to nursery to a 20 minute walk to school. She's in a nursery in the neighbouring town but our top 2 schools we have applied for are in our town.
On office days it will be a 20 minute walk to school. 10 minute walk to the station followed by 45 minute train with no more fretting about finding a parking space. I can't wait!

Rockschooldropout · 09/04/2024 10:34

20 minutes is fine at five .
I had easily that walk to school at the same age

AllEars112232 · 09/04/2024 10:35

If the amount of walking you're doing is an issue, can you very a bike? Push the bike to school, cycle back
Or get child a bike too and both of you cycle?

WillJeSuis · 09/04/2024 10:36

YABU but only because that all adds up to 1 hour and 20 minutes, not 10. Otherwise it sounds fine, as long as it's not cutting into work or anything.

Itsneversimpleisit · 09/04/2024 10:36

Wouldn’t take the dog too, too much hassle as o walk Dd right to the door, never see anyone with dogs

Agree with everyone else, it's fine, and good for both of you. Great habit to get them into. Our walk is about 15 minutes with the 5yo, a bit longer would also be fine. We chat about all sorts and practise her spellings, it's become a really lovely thing.

catinthetinhat · 09/04/2024 10:38

We walk this. It's good exercise for all
Of us. It's something you have to put up with if you're not close to the school you are attending.

For me it would take longer driving as well.

Linedbook · 09/04/2024 10:38

It's probably easier than driving. Getting parked around a school always seems a very stressful way to start your day to me.

Scunnered123 · 09/04/2024 10:39

I can't really understand the question. Surely nobody is going to say this is anything other than normal (not to mention healthy for both child & parent)?

Delatron · 09/04/2024 10:39

I think it’s normal! I used to think I was so lucky only walking 15 mins there and back. Didn’t occur to me that walking for an hour a day was unusual (but then I’d walk the dog and go for a run on top of that).

AyeupDuck · 09/04/2024 10:39

It’s a fair jaunt early in the morning with a little one but it’s fine, just think no need to go to the gym.
