The number of examples AIBU throws up every day is getting insane.

OP asks ‘I bought a new dress for £200 but the shade of green clashes with my shoes. I tried to take it back but the shop said it had been worn. It hasn’t and it still had the tags on. AIBU to think I should get the dress refunded?’

And the replies come:

’YABU. You can’t wear clothes then expect to get a refund!’

’YABU. Why didn’t you take your shoes with you to try it on?’

’YABU. I’d never spend £200 on a dress. See if you can get something in a sale?’

’YANBU. If you’ve bought green, for example, there’s a high risk of clashing and this is what returns policies are for! Go back and speak to a manager.’

’YABU. Why did you buy green knowing they’d clash?’

’YABU to buy something from a sale without speaking to a manager first’

’YABU. You previously posted you prefer trousers’.

It’s mad.

Yeah the place is full of cranks.

Megifer · 07/04/2024 17:22

It's a mixture of both for sure but I think it's mainly people just shitstirring because they've got nothing to do. I refuse to believe anyone is as dense as some posters seem to appear given they can clearly operate a device of some sort.

jengachampion · 07/04/2024 17:23

Some are just thick, and some just want a fight. Most are a combination of the two.

DanielGault · 07/04/2024 17:27

You're right, but this is AIBU so YABU to expect anything better.

Catza · 07/04/2024 17:27

Well, I would be questioning whether there is any point in asking the question to begin with. The person went to refund the dress and was told no by the shop, what exactly can we do in this scenario? Organise a mass protest? So they get the answers they get because I am sure nobody can see what it is they are actually asking.

Stayupallnight · 07/04/2024 17:48

Yeah some people just love to argue and to feel superior in a “I’ll soon put them right!” sort of way, these would be the same people irl who wouldn’t even let you finish a sentence before jumping in with an argument about how you’re doing it all wrong/it’s all your own fault/you need to try harder blah blah. The “AIBU?” forum seems to attract them in droves.

Tbf, the entire point of it is asking for alternative viewpoints. Lots of people seem to miss that. The viewpoints can be delivered in a rather hamfisted way at times, but when you post here, you have to have the body armour on to an extent.

I imagine they are aiming the question at people with knowledge of consumer law in order to check if the shop can do this (if for example they advertise they offer refunds on unworn garments, possibly not) or at people who have successfully negotiated with shops. Even at those who might have creative solutions they hadn't thought of. The point is, they are clearly not aiming it at the sort of fools who give the responses in the OP.

What gets me is the "maybe it's <state something it's clearly not>" posters.

"I walked in on DH buttoning his jeans up and my friends hair and make up was a mess and there's jizz on the leather sofa"

"Maybe they just had a cat nap together and one of them dribbled in their sleep. I dribble a lot in my sleep. Do you have trust issues op? This wouldn't bother me"

🙄

YANBU there is a lot of terrible reading compression on MN and it seems to be getting worse!

TinkerTiger · 07/04/2024 18:01

Omg. Just read a post where the OP states that her mother lives with her, in her house that she owns, and pays all bills for.

The FIRST comment said 'whose house is it?'

Really shocking how many posters will ask a question which is clearly answered in the original post.

Fair point , not everyone will agree or “take your side” but it’s the superior fashion in which it’s communicated , comes across so smug. i feel bad when it’s a new poster with a genuine problem not realising the true nature of the AIBU board tbh!

PrincessTeaSet · 07/04/2024 18:08

Yes... recent thread op said her dad got iv antibiotics for an ongoing infection and while he was there there found an incidental UTI. Cue loads of posters claiming to be doctors jumping in to say you don't get iv antibiotics for a UTI. I mean these are supposedly academically the top few percent..it's quite concerning that these people are in charge of life and death decisions n

ASighMadeOfStone · 07/04/2024 18:08

The ones I find bewildering are where, whatever the question and personal context of the OP, we have to be treated to an irrelevant anecdote from other posters.

"My neighbour parked across my drive and we can't get out"

"Oooh mine used to have all night raves"

Well, that's terrible too, but totally fucking useless info for the OP.

These ones are hilarious - the people falling over themselves to suggest a possible sob story to justify it "maybe your friend had just been told she only has a week left to live, has gone bankrupt and both her parents have been killed horribly in an accident. I really think you need to give her a break.."

I know! I saw that too. It makes you worry what happens if they're called for jury service.

You see it a lot where the relevant info is in the op e.g ‘we have been married for 5 years and have 2 children aged 3 and 1…’
Questions:’are you married?’ ‘Do you have children?’ ‘How old are your children’
It’s right there in the OP!

PuppyMonkey · 07/04/2024 18:21

The usual MN reply to the OP example would surely be more like: “Have you tried taking the dress back to the shop to ask for a refund?” Grin

BuyTheBook · 07/04/2024 18:26

The ones that drive me mad are the ones where OP is told they’re being unreasonable for having a different preference to the poster. So the OP will say, for example, my friend took my IPad without asking and broke it, should they pay to repair it and the first poster with tell them they’re unreasonable for buying an Apple product. Such self-important nonsense, not to mention completely useless ‘advice’.

People don't read the whole post. They read the title, the first sentence and skim read the rest, and decide for themselves what the OP said. They will also regularly invent details which the OP never mentions to put their own spin on a story.

Spudthespanner · 08/04/2024 00:30

YABU getting your knickers in a twist about an online forum. I never read Mumsnet, it's all nonsense. Also I don't wear dresses, why can't you wear trousers OP? Do you feel you have to wear a dress and heels to impress men? You might benefit from therapy.
