Afternoon tea is a rip off largely aimed at ripping women off

Somebody suggested this to me and I’ve never thought of it that way.

You don’t get very men going for afternoon tea do you? The Mark up on afternoon tea is absolutely enormous aside from staffing and cost of the building and stuff- it must be money for old rope for the businesses concerned. Specially the ones that charge over 50 quid ahead.

Are we being conned by the whole afternoon tea debacle?

(yes cake is nice I get that)

I really like a decent quality afternoon tea. Civilised.

No way? Really?

Our drinking is very curbed by the SG.

customers can’t be offered a double spirit or a large glass of wine. It has to be a single or small unless requested. Trebles are illegal

YouHaveToGetMeOutOfThis · 07/04/2024 17:44

What about a spa? Surely that's just water and a bit of soap? A spa combined with afternoon tea? The horror, the horror 😱😂

I agree with this - the customer service is always amazing.

the staff know it’s a treat and so they are very attentive. I went with my elderly mother and they really made a fuss.

Agree, we used to go to go to one nearby (Northcote) but they don't seem to do it any more which is sad. Obviously the women of the Ribble Valley are too tight or there is better business with a three course meal/tasting menu ??

But yes i want to pay a lot and have a lovely place with no scumbags in it. I want to be the most common person there!

MinnieMountain · 07/04/2024 17:45

Exactly @dimllaishebiaith . My DH generally has the latest hockey stick and multiple pairs of skis. My hobby is swimming.

Where can you get a pub lunch for £7 pp?

Loads of places do mid-week or 2 for £X deals

TheGiantEmperor · 07/04/2024 17:46

ThePoshUns · 07/04/2024 16:19

Absolutely, often £30 a head upwards for some itty bitty sandwiches and cake. If you’re lucky a glass of cheap Prosecco thrown in. I’ve only been once and would never do one again.

I paid £300 for me and my 5 year old at The Plaza last week. Almost died when I got the bill.

The Plaza in Stockport ?
Sounds like a rip off.

It's too much food.

What is?

I have had afternoon tea at Betty's on a few occasions. I think you only got one afternoon tea.
I got more than that each time. I have always asked for a box to bring cakes home in.

AyrshireTryer · 07/04/2024 17:51

Get some M and S sandwiches and some cake and have it at home, or in the park when warmer. It is a complete rip-off.

If women didn’t put up with these prices then they would drop, simple as that. For example, a man only pays about £15 for a haircut because they would not accept the £100 cost that women are prepared to pay. Similarly, men don’t do afternoon tea. They will just get a £10 burger and chips.

Edited

Well not all women are prepared to pay £100 for a haircut - I'be only been to a hairdresser once in 30 years. And you can hardly compare an afternoon tea to burger and chips! 😂😂

then dont go

misszebra · 07/04/2024 17:55

if its such a rip off don't bother going! this isn't some womens rights problem where they are treated this way because of being female. no one has a gun to anyones head forcing them to go to afternoon tea, so bloody dramatic.

Coddy · 07/04/2024 17:57

Lol
got to say, though the vote is almost half and half
😝

This thread has made me irrationally angry because all I can think about is having afternoon tea. 😁 I only like the ones that offer sandwich refills - don’t be stingy now!

Only because marketing has told us that the more feminine activites are "frivolous" whilst more manly (and more expensive) activities like road bikes, golf, football and fishing are somehow not frivolous

They might not pay £300 for a handbag, but they would pay £3000 for a road bike, or £700 for a golf club membership or £80 for the latest seasons football shirt

This.

It’s not the marketing, it’s patriarchy. Things that women like are not worth spending money on. Only men’s activities are valuable enough to be worth paying for.

See: a designer handbag is frivolous and a pointless waste of money. A Savile Row suit is a serious investment piece that will result in man being taken more seriously and probably making more money.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/04/2024 18:00

I really like the mini sandwiches. Could do with double those and fewer cakes. Haven’t had an afternoon tea out for ages though. I did once do one at home for my DM on her birthday though, before we went to the theatre - had to leave too early for dinner. And TBH I’m not bothered about Prosecco.

SpiritOfEcstasy · 07/04/2024 18:01

I’ve had so many afternoon teas with my DDs, DM, DSis & friends. Sometimes we do things for the experience … and fuck the cost! We don’t do it often. Once or twice a year, special occasions. And we love it! F&M hands down beats all others IMO.

Hush your mouth. A designer handbag is not frivolous. They're practical and beautiful and last for many years.

EmpressOfTheThread · 07/04/2024 18:03

Sorry, @Denou - I know the point you were making! Any handbag threads on here are met with such venom!

There is such a thing as a 'Gentleman's Tea' btw

That looks like much better food, but why do they assume men like one thing and women another?

Beezknees · 07/04/2024 18:15

The only place I've ever paid more than £50 for afternoon tea is at the Ritz.

I love an afternoon tea, I can afford it so it's not really anyone else's business!

AngelinaFibres · 07/04/2024 18:29

I like a really good tuna sandwich and a pot of tea . I like it even better if I get to have it with a friend. Not really bothered about afternoon tea. Where I am an afternoon tea is around 20.00. I don't think that's unreasonable
