Afternoon tea is a rip off largely aimed at ripping women off

Somebody suggested this to me and I’ve never thought of it that way.

You don’t get very men going for afternoon tea do you? The Mark up on afternoon tea is absolutely enormous aside from staffing and cost of the building and stuff- it must be money for old rope for the businesses concerned. Specially the ones that charge over 50 quid ahead.

Are we being conned by the whole afternoon tea debacle?

(yes cake is nice I get that)

@Sandwichgen The Wolseley (I’m aware that some people on here view it as an annoying default option but I love it). Or The Lanesborough.

shellyleppard · 07/04/2024 17:12

Theworldie..... the Sunday lunch at spoons is no more 😔😔

Tut…now where am I to go for my dose of reality?

Don’t say McDonald’s- that’s a step too far. It’s impossible to wash the smell of grease and desperation out of ones hair.

Anyone else confused about why the OP keeps going on about "giggling" and "oooh"? [Confused]

I think she thinks she’s being funny

Slightly off topic but I once went for a cream tea and it arrived at the table with the sad little blatantly out of a packet

Wait for it ...

READY SLICED WITH THE CREAM AND JAM SPREAD ON

If I wasn't so passive aggressive I would have been outraged I tell you

I had one like that last year. And I don't even like cream. I wanted butter and jam on mine.

Nanny0gg · 07/04/2024 17:25

Coddy · 07/04/2024 16:18

Well I see your point, but honestly the price of the actual team must be like £4

There is such a thing as a 'Gentleman's Tea' btw

shellyleppard · 07/04/2024 17:26

The jam and cream should be separate!!!¡ Pure sacrilege!!!

Dearg · 07/04/2024 16:27

It’s a bit of a minefield for me. Do I eat lunch beforehand ? Or do I risk being all hangry when the afternoon tea arrives? What if I want 2 vol-au-vent, but don’t want a sausage roll at all ? What is the actual point of a cucumber sandwich ?
How to I get the jam out of the dress I was coerced into wearing?
And when it’s all done, the sugar hangover…

Oooh this

I can never decide what to have for my other meals either as whilst it's basically sandwiches I tend to always over eat so feel bloated the rest of the day but aware it's been a nutritionally bad day

Mimrr · 07/04/2024 17:27

No strong feelings. I don’t like the little bit of stress as everyone quickly counts how many of each thing there are so they’re not rude and take more than what’s allocated per head.
I just want to ask if anyone wants all the cakes so I can have all the sandwiches.

Enough with all the giggly/ripped off stuff though please. I don’t hang about with people who giggle or don’t have the capacity to avoid ‘frivolous shit’.

LouOver · 07/04/2024 17:27

Yes its a massive ROI in the industry. To not be ripped off you either go cheap or to the other extreme of where your also then paying for the experience of being at the ritz for example.

One 4+ hotel I managed started doing a mens afternoon tea. Think a mini fillet, sliders, scotch egg....it was amazing but it was stopped by head office because it became popular with women who clearly also like meat and picky bits....the price point v roi was so poor compared to a standard so back to sandwiches and little cakes.

shellyleppard · 07/04/2024 17:27

Theworldie..... burger king???? At least you would smell slightly of char grill meat 🤔🤔🤣🤣

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 07/04/2024 17:28

Place near me does Cake Tapas. 4 slices of cake, you choose from whatever they have on the counter that day. £10. Bargain.

Don't see the point of afternoon tea.

BlueThursday · 07/04/2024 17:29

I quite fancy a bottomless brunch simply because they’re forbidden in Scotland

we can’t be trusted with more than a thimbleful of Prosecco with our sandwiches

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 07/04/2024 17:30

Actually @GoldenSpraint I can't recall, I think the sadness of it all has made my poor brain forget. Self preserve-ation, if you will Grin

I love the occasional afternoon tea.

What is a rip-off is football - huge amounts of money spent on tickets, merch, travel to stand outside in all weathers and potentially see your team lose/be robbed of a win/dull 0-0 draw. Repeat 38+ times in a season and then be relegated.
Oe pay ££ for tv rights and watch your team be relegated.
Don’t tell the thicko men that I am also partial to watching a game of football and my team are shite

notacooldad · 07/04/2024 17:34

Me and Dh go to afternoon tea quite often. We usually go to ones recommended by friends and have has some really lovely afternoons.
Those saying it's just cheap food and even cheaper prosecco should look at where they are going first.
Near me, some of the nicer cafes offer a afternoon tea and it's great having a few hours with my friends to catch up.
Incidentally I bought two male friends afternoon tea gift cards. One was for Christmas and other a birthday. That seemed to be a good choice and they sent photos of the food. It seemed like money well spent!

Why? Was this another of Nutjob Nicola’s rules?

squeaver · 07/04/2024 17:35

"Go for afternoon tea" has become the new "book yourself a spa day", I see.

Nice to move the discourse on, Coddy, good work.

kitsuneghost · 07/04/2024 16:52

Women ARE an easier target though. You wouldn't catch a man paying £50 for afternoon tea. You also don't find them paying:
£30 for quick hair trim
£30 to get their nails coloured in
£300 for a handbag
£50 for a pot of face cream
Add you own to this

I do recognise the some men do and some women don't argumrnts but you gotta admit spending money on frivolous shit is predominantly female hobby

Only because marketing has told us that the more feminine activites are "frivolous" whilst more manly (and more expensive) activities like road bikes, golf, football and fishing are somehow not frivolous

They might not pay £300 for a handbag, but they would pay £3000 for a road bike, or £700 for a golf club membership or £80 for the latest seasons football shirt

Because shes "not like other women"...

Pottedpalm · 07/04/2024 17:39

Testina · 07/04/2024 16:22

And actually, in my local village (full of oldies) the afternoon tea market is all women of about 55 living it large on their slightly older (early) retired husband’s pension, with their boomer cheap housing long paid off. So the menz are paying 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I’m really seeing this as a common sense issue not a feminist issue.

Yeah, all those 55 year olds living it up while you work
to pay their pensions. Bad innit!

Last time we went to Maccy’s a few weeks ago we as a family of 4 including a child getting a happy meal spent £28!! I could have bought us all a pub lunch for that. Not been since and have no plans to go.

Where can you get a pub lunch for £7 pp?

Afternoon tea is a bit of a rip off, I grant you.

As a weapon designed to target women!? Since when are women forced to partake of afternoon tea, but men aren’t?

Your friend needs to find something else to get outraged about.

Edited

Just to even it out take friend to a football match get pie chips and drink that’ll be similar to an afternoon tea

Hiker50 · 07/04/2024 17:41

It's too much food.
