To not get the hate thrown at EVs?

We have an EV. We didn’t get it for environmental reasons, we got it because I have access to an EV lease scheme via work and it was the most cost effective way for us to get a new car. I don’t think I’m morally superior for having one. It serves us well, is nice to drive, and cheaper (for us) than running a petrol car.

What I don’t get is the visceral hatred some people have for them. I understand they aren’t for everyone, there are definite logistical challenges with on-street parking and long journeys particularly. However, I expect range and logistics to improve as time goes on. I also get that some car fans might find them a bit sanitised. But I don’t really get why some people are so viciously against them?

See my post above. More likely to be written off or very expensive repair including new battery…

That makes sense. So in any collision the battery is deemed unsafe?

How certain are you that the supply chain for ICEs is squeaky clean?

Newsflash: it’s not. How ethical exactly do you think the supply chain of petroleum/diesel is? Again: lots of issues from widespread corruption to refineries using huge amounts of electricity and water, in addition to pollution.

Needing fossil fuels for part of the production process doesn’t make a new technology inherently bad whether it be EVs, solar panels or modern method of building construction.

No car is green, and no car is ethical, but some choices are better than others.

And some are utterly impractical for many of us.

Mapletreelane · 07/04/2024 16:33

I'd love an EV, I really would. Would be perfect for me,.I do loads of town driving,.very few long journeys, have a driveway. I currently have a petrol runaround.

However.....my budget for my next car is about 9k, which gets me a decent 2nd hand petrol around that should.last me 6 to 8 years. I cannot afford an EV, and certainly don't want to buy a second hand one with a short battery life. I don't want to be spending £300 per month leasing one as a second runaround .

So until they become more affordable I won't be getting one. Doesn't mean I hate them. I am just frustrated they are not affordable and don't look to be affordable in the near future.

Hiker50 · 07/04/2024 16:34

There are a lot of trolls who are constantly attacking EV'S all over the internet.
I love mine.

SiriAlexa · 07/04/2024 16:35

@Mapletreelane

I think that’s a really far comment. Hopefully we will start to see more affordable EVs coming onto the market but for now I realise they are really pricey.

SiriAlexa · 07/04/2024 16:35

*fair, not far!

Well that was the case for the Tesla that ran into our car. Tesla said the battery would no longer be covered by the warranty unless it was replaced, so the insurance company deemed it to be uneconomical to repair and wrote it off. It was a minor collision, our (diesel) car only had a scratched bumper.

I often see ev Denver’s trying to work out the app or whatever it is to charge their cars. One poor woman was getting drenched in the rain. She was there for ages figuring it out! They should have shelters over them like petrol pumps.

My favourite one does thank goodness. It’s by a coffee shop and supermarket too. If I could be bothered there is a pay as you go gym too.

Theunamedcat · 07/04/2024 16:38

I could afford to buy one I cannot afford to insure one

You could get a small EV for that. A second hand Zoe is £5-7000. You might not want to though.

Catapultaway · 07/04/2024 16:38

The only people I find who want to talk about EVs is those that have them, nobody else cares... why would they.

Our insurance is comparable to our ICE car.

Roselilly36 · 07/04/2024 16:55

So many reasons, lithium mining is the main reason I wouldn’t have an EV, but aside from that, the range advertised is rarely achievable, EV’s are much heavier than regular fuel cars, electrical/battery fires are much more difficult to extinguish, car parks and roads aren’t built for the heavy EV. Once batteries need changing the vehicle is scrapped as uneconomical to replace . Poor re sell value. The hassle/time needed to recharge on long journeys, with a petrol/diesel you can refill at services and be on be back on the road in under 5 mins. Cost of electricity.

That is the question - WHY would they?
And yet so many people in SM and IRL take great delight in telling EV owners how stupid they are for having one

Exactly why insurance premiums have massively increased IMHO.

Probably like the people on here who get cross about vegans- a sort of inability to
cope with the fact that someone has made a different and possibly better moral choice, so that choice has to be rubbished.

This ^ 😂😂😂 Jesus it’s incredible on here!

Hebeegeebe · 07/04/2024 17:05

So much misinformation and half truths on EVs, I would love to own one but just cannot afford it at the moment. If governments were serious about offsetting climate change they would be incentivising people to switch. Hope to see it in the near future!

Nothingandnobody · 07/04/2024 17:10

I don't want one but I've never heard anyone showing hatred of them. I don't like them but hate is too strong a word. Where I live electric wires are starting to creep across pavements to charge them - a trip hazard. I don't like that people who have them seem to want to talk about them all the time.
I don't want one because I can't have a charger on my house - logistically a charging point isn't possible on the house or through a window. I feel stressed a lot of the time without adding stress about where and when to charge. Getting petrol takes about 4 minutes whereas charging has to be thought through and longer is needed if you can't have a charger at home.

Despite all that, I don't hate them - I just don't want one.

Catapultaway · 07/04/2024 16:38

I don’t have one and I care, and I want to talk about them 😂

Littlebitpsycho · 07/04/2024 17:21

I don't hate them, my exH has one for a company car and its very nice to drive.

But they would just be useless for me, far too expensive to buy, impossible to charge when I live in a first floor flat, and no good for towing.

I just think if the govt are going to push them, they need to actually consider all these things

hayless · 07/04/2024 17:21

What people vehemently object to is being forced to have one, when the technology is inferior.

We're not there yet, but it isn't far away. You all know that the sale of new petrol/diesel cars will be banned from 2035? There's no chance the tech/electrical grid is going to improve by then.

I also object to this pressure to become vegan. For me, no fucking way. No way in hell am I going to sacrifice my physical and mental health 'for the planet' when I live such a low-impact life otherwise.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 07/04/2024 17:22

Colddespiteduvet · 07/04/2024 16:15

With a new EV your car would charge in the time it takes for that petrol to up, loo trip and lunch.

But that assumes that you’re the only person wanting to use the charger? What if there are 5, 10 or more waiting?

VanGoghsDog · 07/04/2024 17:26

I have nothing against EVs per se, but I won't be getting one any time soon.

What I would like is not to have to listen to my sister going on for forty minutes every time I phone her about how difficult some aspect of owning and driving her EV is. And when the hospital called to say mum was very ill, sister couldn't leave home for an hour because she didn't have enough charge, and even charging at home for an hour was only enough to get her to a services with a better charger where she would have to wait again while it charged.

And when she stays with me she seems to think my electricity is free or something. Don't know where people get the "charge at home for iennors" idea, last time she stayed overnight it cost me £14 and she still complained it wasn't fully charged (but there was no need for her to tell me because I DON'T CARE!).

Who’s forcing you to get an EV, and who is pressuring you to be come vegan? 😂

soupfiend · 07/04/2024 17:27

I think a post on here is indicative of why there may be a perception of hate or anger

Because the buying of or using of an EV is seen as a 'better moral choice' by some. Another poster claimed this and compared it to veganism

Thats what gets people angry about EVs or the discussion about it. No one is morally superior to someone else by the choice of their car or eating habits

The discussion often paints drivers as too stupid or immoral or backward or old fashioned or whatever if they dont want an EV or it doesnt work for them and that of course will make people angry.
