AIBU to wish that people starting a new thread would proofread their OP or, at the very least, make sure the title makes sense?

I do realise that this is not a world-shattering issue...

I suppose my feeling is that if you want people to contribute to your thread you should at least make the effort to ensure it's comprehensible.

I piss myself of sometimes . I have dyslexia I don't understand grammar I can't spell very well. Sometimes it's typos /prodictive text or fat fingers. Then on top of that the kids are going on . I rush it press send then 10 minds later I read it and think ffs.

PostItInABook · 06/04/2024 16:59

Your title doesn’t make much sense or give any context either. Take your own advice 😂.

Of course dyslexia is a totally valid reason for making grammar and spelling mistakes, etc. But I still have to ask - why not read it through before you post rather than ten minutes after?!

Surely everyone knows what an OP is, and mine isn't littered with errors.

I was actually thinking 'Do they mean OT's' 🤔😂

I'm with you OP. At least get the title right! But you know this makes us terrible people, don't you..

Here they come now..........

MonsteraMama · 06/04/2024 17:05

I get what you mean, but it's a casual internet forum, not an English exam. I very rarely come across a post that's completely incomprehensible. Some interesting spelling and grammar, yes, but only once in a while do I encounter one where I think "I have absolutely no idea what this person is trying to say", and 9 times out of 10 those threads are trolls anyway.

Reading comprehension on the other hand leaves a lot to be desired on this site. Very frustrating to read threads where the entire first page of responses is people asking things which are answered in the OP.

TheShellBeach · 06/04/2024 17:05

Well, your title isn't very descriptive.

I explained in my post distraction and trying to juggle things. Also with dyslexia my spelling/grammar will not be put right by checking it. If I'm writing something that's complicated in my head I then find it hard to put into writing.

Fair enough; that makes sense.

Surely everyone knows what an OP is, and mine isn't littered with errors.

‘OPs’ could mean lots of different things to different people. My first thought was Operation Plato. Another poster thought you meant OTs. I’m sure most people note their mistakes once posted, and then assume everyone will be able to figure it out like you have.

A better title might have been ‘AIBU to wish people would proofread their posts?’

I know it's not an exam, but when there's a big fat typo in the title...

Agree with you about reading comprehension. It's quite shocking sometimes.

Seriously?

Loads of reasons why Yabu

Ppl struggle to spell for various reasons, also predictive text is a pain and you may have crappy WiFi / internet and therefore may not be sure it's posted etc

If it bothers you a lot, I would get a different hobby as it's not polite to critique other peoples posts for spelling / grammar

It's not school

You are not in charge

However, I do also get that for some people reading poorly spelt and written things can be really triggering and annoying, but my advice is find another hobby if it is going to irk you or learn to live with it.

It's ok, I'm not losing sleep over it. Mild annoyance maybe, but no lasting trauma.

You don't need to edit - or at least you're less likely to - if you read what you typed before posting.
