Please tell me it’s not just me. Every time I accidentally buy rapeseed oil (or rather DH does) the house ends up stinking of fish. The last time he picked up veg oil and didn’t check to see if it was taper not.

crisp and dry
tescos own
sainsburys own

I can’t believe people actually don’t mind the smell.

Here is a serving of fried onions with an added aroma of fish!

No idea what you're talking about. We use rapeseed oil almost exclusively for cooking and it doesn't smell of fish at all. Are you sure it isn't the pan you used that hasn't been washed properly?

I’ve used old pans and brand new pans

My old house in the south west and my new house in scotland

I don’t often cook fish at all

Any chance it's gone off? I use it and can't bear the smell of fish so would definitely notice if it gave off a fishy smell!

pensione · 06/04/2024 13:11

I think it’s just you, OP. Rapeseed oil is used primarily because it’s so bland with no smell. It does absorb the flavours of whatever you cook in it though. That’s why food manufacturers put it in everything from cakes to biscuits etc

Having said that rapeseed and sunflower oils are no good for you due to the high levels of omega 6.

Change to coconut oil, olive oil or ghee.

If you don’t like those, change to Extra Virgin Rapeseed Oil, which is far less processed and better than Crisp n Dry etc.

MrsToothyBitch · 06/04/2024 13:11

I don't buy rapeseed oil but my mum used to, when I was living at home as a teen. Never had this issue. I dislike most fish/fishy smells so if this was a usual thing my mum would never have got beyond the first bottle!

supertatos · 06/04/2024 13:12

I have NEVER noticed this. Are you frying at too high a temp perhaps?

PotatoPudding · 06/04/2024 13:13

I honestly don’t know what you mean. I have used it for years but don’t find it smells.

OutOfTheHouse · 06/04/2024 13:16

Can’t say I’ve ever noticed it.

isthismylifenow · 06/04/2024 13:27

I have this same problem with canola oil.

No one else seems to have this problem, so perhaps you and me are olfactory sense heightened.

I only bought it once by mistake but make a point of never making that mistake again.

(We don't get rapeseed oil it's canola where I am )

hedgehoglurker · 06/04/2024 13:27

OP I agree with you about it being fishy, but more the taste than smell. I used to wonder
why my fried eggs and roast potatoes tasted fishy, and finally realised that it was the oil. It wasn't old or anything, just regular vegetable oil made from rapeseed.

I can use a little bit in certain cooking, but now use groundnut oil which has a very clean flavour to me, or ghee for the majority of my cooking. (No nut allergies amongst my family or visitors.)

I don't eat any fish or seafood, so perhaps this makes me more sensitive to it.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 06/04/2024 13:31

I only use rapeseed oil and I’ve never thought it smells like fish!

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 06/04/2024 13:34

I use it all the time.. never ever had a fish smell.
It's better for you than veg oil.
Olive oil you can't cook at high temps.

hedgehoglurker · 06/04/2024 13:36

I wonder if the people that taste/ smell fish also find artificial sweeteners have a terribly bitter aftertaste?

Terrribletwos · 06/04/2024 13:41

I have used it on occasion in the past but completely stopped as also experienced wierd (possibly fishy) smell. Only use sunflower or olive oil now.

Also, get bitter after taste from sweeteners and can detect (and hate) the taste of palm oil which seems to be in everything nowadays.

Terrribletwos · 06/04/2024 13:42

Fishy taste I mean. And I don't eat any seafood.

Malarandras · 06/04/2024 13:44

No this is not a thing in my house. Or anybody else’s house I know that uses rapeseed oil. Sounds really odd..

Thelnebriati · 06/04/2024 13:44

I never buy canola/rape (its the same stuff) because it tastes rank - I wonder if its like how some people taste soap when they eat coriander?

pensione · 06/04/2024 13:45

Rapeseed and canola are the same thing. Mass produced and bad for you.

Shellingbynight · 06/04/2024 13:46

I stopped using it as I hate the smell/taste, but I don't find it fishy. I find it cabbagey - because rapeseed is a brassica (cabbage family). That cabbagey-ness is where the bitterness comes from that some people have mentioned.

Dontdeclutterthemagic · 06/04/2024 13:59

Yes I also find it fishy. Even the stuff hand pressed on site yesterday organically locally grown blah blah. Pleased it is not just me as so many chefs seem to rate it. I only use sunflower or olive.

SofaSpuds · 06/04/2024 14:05

I also can't taste or small anything from rapeseed oil🤔

nimski · 06/04/2024 14:08

We use rapeseed oil and it definitely doesn't smell of fish. I'd notice as I loathe the smell of fish!!

ScottishScouser · 06/04/2024 14:15

I only use it rarely when I want to deep fry something in bland oil - normally sunflower .

this morning it was black rice to make puffed rice for a salad.

By the sounds of it, a few of us have the same thing. And yes artificial sweeteners taste bitter and I can’t figure out how anyone can honestly like them!

Seashor · 06/04/2024 14:38

I can’t stand the smell of it as it’s growing in the fields, it’s absolutely revolting so I never use it.
