Rapeseed oil - how can anyone cook with it - fish smell

Please tell me it’s not just me. Every time I accidentally buy rapeseed oil (or rather DH does) the house ends up stinking of fish. The last time he picked up veg oil and didn’t check to see if it was taper not.

I can’t believe people actually don’t mind the smell.

Here is a serving of fried onions with an added aroma of fish!

No idea what you're talking about. We use rapeseed oil almost exclusively for cooking and it doesn't smell of fish at all. Are you sure it isn't the pan you used that hasn't been washed properly?

I think for some people the smell of rapeseed oil is offensive. Maybe it is genetic?

I can't stand the smell or taste of the stuff and always use light olive oil.

Apparently it’s to do with the breakdown of omega 3 fatty acids at high temperatures.

Yes I think it's gross.

My mum fried me an egg and I instantly clocked it had been cooked in a new and unpleasant tasting oil.

Have avoided it since. Bleurgh.

It's called Canola in North America, rapeseed in other English speaking countries.

It was a long time ago that I looked it up, but think it's to do with having a higher number of taste buds, so a finer, more defined sense of taste. It was termed Supertaster.

Most people have a regular amount, so can only taste sweetener as sweet without the nasty aftertaste.

Some people have fewer taste buds, and consequently can eat most things. Luckily my husband seems to fall into this category, so he happily polishes off anything I can't/ won't eat.

Just to throw a spanner in the works, I find rapeseed oil pretty flavourless but can taste artificial sweeteners in anything.

It's not just you. I hate it and find it smells of fish no matter how new it is. Maybe some people perceive it differently

I also hate sunflower oil and find it has a similar horrible taste for me

Ive never noticed it smelling of fish but I cant stand the stuff, it has a horrible taste and smell to my mind

So its EVOO and sunflower oil only

And I dont take notice of this myth that you cant roast or fry with EVOO, Im increasingly using it for everything

I use it all the time.. never ever had a fish smell.
It's better for you than veg oil.
Olive oil you can't cook at high temps.

I buy veg oil from Tesco and it is rapeseed oil - that's the ingredients

Yeah I find it smells/tastes fishy too, eggs fried in it are gross! I only use olive oil.
I also find artificial sweetener bitter and hate coriander and celery (also bitter).

I have the same issue and with vegetable oil. The smell makes me gag. Olive oil only here.

There is a difference between rapeseed and canola oil. Canola was created by cross-breeding rapeseed, and doesn’t have the glucosinolates and erucic acid.

I'm allergic to rapeseed pollen. I discovered this when the farmer planted the field next to our house with it !

I think I'm allergic to the oil too. I analysis check its not in the oil I buy.

That's still mass-produced, it's not like he's only making 10 bottles a year, it's just a different method. Almost all the rapeseed oil sold in Ireland is produced the same way, including the huge quantities sold in Lidl and Aldi.

There is a difference between cold pressed and mass produced oil.

Mass produced just means produced en masse.

The method is a different kettle of fish(y smelling oil)
