To think people should wear fucking earphones?

Just had a long return train journey with a few changes. Without fail, every train had at least two people in the seats near me either watching videos or playing games on their phone with the volume up.

I know you can't expect complete silence in public but the repetitive tunes and sound effects on slot machine games are bloody annoying when you're continuously subjected to them for hours.

The train didn't have the option of a quiet carriage and it was busy ao I didn't have the option of moving away.

AIBU to think people should have more consideration and realise that the whole carriage doesn't want to listen to whatever shite they are playing/ watching?

YANBU

All of these people should be sent to re-education centres for at least a year.

MaryFuckingFerguson · 05/04/2024 21:10

I ALWAYS say to people that do this, ‘can you wear earphones? I can hear that!’. I do it with a big smile as though they couldn’t possibly be doing it on purpose. Without fail, they comply. The morons 😂

Overthebow · 05/04/2024 21:11

YANBU. Lots of people are no longer considerate of others. Of course they should wear earphones. Some people may try to give excuses but really, if someone can’t wear earphones then they shouldn’t be watching /playing on a device with the sound on, it’s not a necessity.

bringmorewashing · 05/04/2024 21:21

Of course YANBU but these people are everywhere! I have had a lot of hospital appointments lately and noticed there's always at least one in the waiting room watching mindless, screechy YouTube videos without earphones (and these are adults, waiting for a relatively short time!)

Agreed! They could spend their free time sorting recycling and litter-picking.

The drive me mad!

Legacy of stupid phone companies taking the earphone plugs out of their handsets.

Some people just have no self-awareness or don't give a shit.

Considering another bugbear of train travel is the endless automated announcements, why can't there be an announcement to tell passengers to wear headphones if they want to listen/watch devices? That would cut a lot of it out, the problem is it's normalised and people are sheep and follow others.

MeridianB · 05/04/2024 21:32

They are weapons grade fuckwits.

I have asked a couple to turn the volume down and they have straight away without a murmur. But I’d prefer not to get stabbed so I don’t confront anyone dodgy- looking.

AngelQuartz · 05/04/2024 21:46

Of course YANBU.

It baffles me how a lot of people just don’t have spatial awareness or consideration for others.

A few weeks ago a guy in my office was on a long Teams call without headphones so the whole office could hear the meeting. I get embarrassed on their behalf for their complete lack of awareness.

There seems to be a lack of etiquette when it comes to public transport.
For the love of all things holy. Please use headphones, as no one has any interest in what you are listening to.
Also please keep private conversations private. I have no wish to hear about your uninteresting lives.
Get your feet off the seats.
And my top pet peeve of the moment. Blow that vape in my direction one more time and I will rip both your arms off.

There I feel much better now. Let me pop my noise cancelling headphones back in and carry on reading my book, so I can block you all out.

YES! This is exactly how I feel!!

Yes but phones have bluetooth and most headphones are bluetooth enabled. It's almost like its too hard to pair two devices together.

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 05/04/2024 22:32

I hate these entitled wankers.

LightDrizzle · 05/04/2024 22:41

All of the above.

Inspired by another thread on this subject I renamed my phone “FFS! Use headphones!” In the hope fuckwits will see it come up on their devices in public places, especially trains.

I too don’t understand with airlines don’t tag a sentence prohibiting it to their long announcement prohibiting smoking and vaping.

A recent trip to Japan was bliss: consideration for others is so ingrained and well policed.

creekpassage · 05/04/2024 22:49

Is it also a thing these days that people walk around talking into their phone on speaker phone? Why? These people are dreadful.

PurpleWhirple · 05/04/2024 22:53

Absolutely agree. I've just returned from a trip to the USA which included a 10 hour train trip. I'd been on the train for about 2 hours when I realised how beautifully quiet it was, and not a single antisocial bastard played their fucking phones out load for the entire 10 hours. It was a world away from train travel in the uk.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 05/04/2024 23:08

Totally agree
we were on a train on Easter Monday, very quiet, me, DH and the 2 DC who are teens but would never dream of behaving like this.

Young woman in the next seat, playing some stupid video at full volume. DH leaned over and asked her to turn it down or use headphones. She said to him “What are you my dad or somethin” then flounced off to the next carriage, no doubt to piss off some other poor passenger.

We had a laugh about it and then when we got off the train we saw her in front of us, walking down the platform still blasting the damn video at full volume.

I take the tube most days and I always tell people to turn their volume down, I do feel a bit wary about it though.

stayathomer · 05/04/2024 23:10

I feel like there needs to be regular ads reminding people of everyday behaviour- say please and thank you, you may have to wait- that’s okay, open the door or stand back for people, perhaps don’t be so loud on your phone, use headphones!!!

HullaBallu · 05/04/2024 23:34

YANBU. It feels like a tiny threshold that's been crossed socially - that some people no longer consider others around them, and most people are too scared of repercussions if they challenge the behaviour, so say nothing. Which reinforces it.

It is round here. Baffling. (And really fucking annoying!)

Marchintospring · 05/04/2024 23:53

DH always says something. One lad was watching a video and DH had a polite word saying he'd come over and watch it with him.

To be fair it doesn't bother me. I get irritated voices - phone calls, loud performance parenting and leery lads swearing. I usually say something to them. Well not the parents, they can't be told. One lady in Tesco was singing proper opera style to her child all the way round. Would have been better if she told her child not to handle all the baguettes though.

blue345 · 06/04/2024 00:32

It drives me insane.

I think we should start a movement where all of us passengers having to listen to the shitty videos each play the worst song we can find on Spotify out loud for a minute (I choose Barbie Girl).

They'd surely get the message that no one would be able to hear anything if we were all that fucking selfish. I will have a word if needed but I'm in the minority.

beethecrackon24995 · 06/04/2024 01:18

It's not just when travelling on ie a train. I've noticed it a lot lately in cafes. I don't mind the sound of people talking but the sound of hands free phone conversations or ie videos etc is very different/more what I would call noise pollution. I can be quite gobby but I tend to hold back from saying something in relation to this as in my experience the types that behave like this look like they are doing it to be edgy/defiant and am pretty sure they wouldn't take kindly. I'd rather leave or move than engage with a rude loser

candyisdandybutliquorisquicker · 06/04/2024 01:25

I actually had a run-in with someone the other day about this, and was called a Karen for my trouble 🙄.

I was sitting in a coffee shop which had (obnoxiously loud) music playing. Oh well, NBD. Then this kid aged about 20, at a guess, comes in and sits about 8 feet away from me and turns up his music on his phone. So now there's competing shit music in a public space 😡

I asked him politely if he had headphones and he did not receive my question well. Eventually he storms out and the coffee shop staff member came over to me. Said that this kid was "challenged" (by which I think he meant on the spectrum.)

I'm in two minds as to whether I would react the same way if I'm ever in that situation again.

I recently got a new phone and was extremely confused that there was no headphone jack. Didn't even occur to me that it might not (it's not an iphone) because why on earth would anyone remove it?!

I do have Bluetooth headphones, but making sure I have that one specific set of headphones with me at all times (and making sure they're charged) is a pain in the a**. I bought a converter for the USB slot so now I also have to remember to bring that if I need to use regular headphones 🙄

Would still never occur to me to listen to anything on my phone out loud in public if I didn't have the Bluetooth headphones or the converter with me
