To think people should wear fucking earphones?

Just had a long return train journey with a few changes. Without fail, every train had at least two people in the seats near me either watching videos or playing games on their phone with the volume up.

I know you can't expect complete silence in public but the repetitive tunes and sound effects on slot machine games are bloody annoying when you're continuously subjected to them for hours.

The train didn't have the option of a quiet carriage and it was busy ao I didn't have the option of moving away.

AIBU to think people should have more consideration and realise that the whole carriage doesn't want to listen to whatever shite they are playing/ watching?

I agree that this will be a legacy of the children allowed to watch cartoons at full blast in restaurants etc. No reason to consider that anyone else might not want to hear your shite.

I disagree that it is to do with removing the earphone jack. That was 2016. 8 years is plenty enough time to get used to the idea, especially when you consider that many of the people doing this were kids then. It’s much easier to put in Bluetooth headphones that connect instantly than have cables hanging about.

What I don’t get is that we can all agree that this is annoying, yet the playing music in your garden threads are often divided.

I find outdoor music utterly unbearable and it has ruined pleasant spring and summer days for me countless times. However, it's usually played on speakers and so doesn't have the harsh tinny sound that a phone or tablet does which is physically painful to hear. Also, you can (reluctantly) go indoors and shut the windows or go out somewhere if you have neighbours irritating enough to play music outside but you can't fling yourself off a train however tempting it can be! I think that might be the difference.

I ALWAYS say to people that do this, ‘can you wear earphones? I can hear that!’. I do it with a big smile as though they couldn’t possibly be doing it on purpose. Without fail, they comply. The morons 😂

I might try this or a variation thereof.

I think we can blame Apple for this though, as they removed the headphone jack on phones. It can be a right pain trying to hook up wireless ones, so people are lazy and don't.

I still have an old school ipod style music player that I can use headphones with :)

It's not that easy to connect Bluetooth headphones. And they often disconnect as well. I do think it's part of the issue although people are just lazy and inconsiderate as well.

As for playing music in a garden, people are just arseholes. Use headphones or go indoors!

YANBU. When I was on the train home the other day an off duty guard was sat in front of me watching some football match on his phone with the volume on max. I'm guessing it's not part of their job description to ask people to wear headphones.

Yes it very often seems to be football matches on the trains I frequent as well!

This is one of my pet hates. Worse still in a restaurant . Hubby brought me to a fancy place where an older couple watched a loud video on their phone and the wife smiled over at me as if to say “aren’t we fun people” .( you’d think at their age they would have picked up a shred of dining etiquette) The owner was within a whisker of asking them to put their phone away . Most phones come with ear phones and sorry we don’t all want to hear whatever boring shite you are listening to. No, you are definitely not being unreasonable.

It really is easy to connect Bluetooth ones. I have had to connect mine once, after that they automatically connect.

Mine are crap and I have to reconnect them every time. And sometimes they disconnect while I am using them. But usually I use wired ones with my old skool music player.

Well the problem there is the headphones, not Bluetooth or the lack of cable.
And even if mine ran out of power or I left them at home I still would entertain the idea of playing something in public full blast.

I travel on trains a lot and this drives me potty, it’s so rude, why on Earth does everyone think it’s fine for the whole train to have to hear it?

Gunz · 06/04/2024 21:05

Honestly - if I travel by train I always have a set of earphones in my possession. You either get the one in the carriage who talks on the phone the entire journey, the one who plays gods knows what out aloud or bunch of women/men on a day out. Used to be able to read a book on a train - not anymore. Revert to audio books instead!

All I want to do is read my book - I can concentrate fine with ordinary background noise (conversations, children chatting, train/ traffic etc.) but loud speakerphone conversations (they always bawl at each other) and video/ gaming sounds coming from a phone just gets into your brain.

I might invest in ear plugs.

@TurnCuriousTurn My three year old understand s 'no sound on videos if we're in public' but then, it's a very rare occasion that he has access to our phones.
