To think people should wear fucking earphones?

Just had a long return train journey with a few changes. Without fail, every train had at least two people in the seats near me either watching videos or playing games on their phone with the volume up.

I know you can't expect complete silence in public but the repetitive tunes and sound effects on slot machine games are bloody annoying when you're continuously subjected to them for hours.

The train didn't have the option of a quiet carriage and it was busy ao I didn't have the option of moving away.

AIBU to think people should have more consideration and realise that the whole carriage doesn't want to listen to whatever shite they are playing/ watching?

Yanbu at all, I'm half tempted to buy a load of cheap headphones and hand them out to people doing this

Valhalla17 · 06/04/2024 06:19

I'm always really passive aggressive and suggest loudly that they add a pair of headphones to their xmas list 😆

I hear you OP. It boils my blood.

Facetime calls as well. I don't want to be involved in your ridiculous inane conversation and video call!

Imisscoffee2021 · 06/04/2024 06:23

Totally agree, and there's this new habit or trend of talking on speakerphone with the phone held miles away from your mouth so everyone has to hear your loud gob plus the tinny scratchy loud gob of your friend on the other side! That or video calls constantly too, so wierd!

Legacy of stupid phone companies taking the earphone plugs out of their handsets.

Some people just have no self-awareness or don't give a shit.

There is Bluetooth! You aren’t forced to pay £160-220 for AirPods. I have a pair for £20 and are fine.

Auburngal · 06/04/2024 06:40

There’s those who don’t switch off their keyboard click noise.

I feel like snatching the phone off them and switching the keyboard sounds myself

Auburngal · 06/04/2024 06:42

Why is the music played always rubbish? Never heard any decent music from them.

PennyPugwash · 06/04/2024 07:16

You are my person OP!!!!
I absolutely lose my marbles at people inconsideration these days
I ALWAYS ask them to turn it down

Of course, but that's how it started. It's just become learned behviour now.

Seymour5 · 06/04/2024 07:40

I don’t have the confidence to ask someone to modify their behaviour nowadays. Similarly I find it hard to have to ask for a seat on PT, even though I am obviously less able to stand or climb stairs than the majority of other travellers. I’m conscious that makes me sound like a miserable old moaner, but selfishness has become normalised IMO.

I really like the idea of announcements about headphones, perhaps they could also include a request not to sit in a priority seat unless its a necessity.

Because people who do this are morons and therefore will have inane taste in music.

Fizbosshoes · 06/04/2024 07:47

YANBU but almost everyday I sit on the train next to someone wearing headphones but they have the volume so loud, it barely makes a difference

SnarkMode · 06/04/2024 08:04

Glad I'm not alone. I used to really enjoy public transport - coffee on the table and a couple of hours to read my book. Screaming babies or chatty children would be disruptful too, but those things can't be helped and I find that sort of noise is easier to shut out than a shouty YouTube video.

I don't own headphones but if I hadn't brought a book to read I wouldn't start watching my phone out loud, I'd scroll on something readable or look out the window.

The speakerphone thing drives me up the wall as well - really popular in the supermarket for some reason and the call seems to last the full way round the shop.

All of the above.

Inspired by another thread on this subject I renamed my phone “FFS! Use headphones!” In the hope fuckwits will see it come up on their devices in public places, especially trains.

I too don’t understand with airlines don’t tag a sentence prohibiting it to their long announcement prohibiting smoking and vaping.

A recent trip to Japan was bliss: consideration for others is so ingrained and well policed.

Edited

Yup! As an autistic person I find the Japanese concept of thinking of others around them so mentally relaxing. My husband and I love it over there as that's how we live our lives too.

Hearing videos and music played out loud is a painful sensory nightmare for me 😭

LlynTegid · 06/04/2024 08:18

If you did not want to approach them directly there are ways of contacting the train guard, or if the videos/games involved violence, foul language or racism, you could use the BTP text number.

MississippiAF · 06/04/2024 08:21

Yanbu. Also should be mandatory for the increasingly number of people who insist on FaceTiming in public.

I don't know why I never thought of asking the train guard - though when the guard was checking tickets they never said anything.

I never spoke up myself as I assume that people with the brass neck to behave like this in the first place are the sort of people who would just laugh and turn their volume up to make a point.

Of course YANBU.

It baffles me how a lot of people just don’t have spatial awareness or consideration for others.

A few weeks ago a guy in my office was on a long Teams call without headphones so the whole office could hear the meeting. I get embarrassed on their behalf for their complete lack of awareness.

The last time someone did that I could hear nothing except the bloke behind him (my attendee). I made him go and find a meeting room.

Idiot

One day I will crack and treat the bastards to my 80s novelty hits playlist

There's klingons on the starboard now...

Ellemeg82 · 06/04/2024 08:32

Agree with everything here!
A lot of people seem to have become increasingly rude, obnoxious and self entitled with no respect for others.

Like others have said - blasting out music/videos without headphones, stupid talking into a phone on speaker and shouting as they can't hear - how about using a phone as it was designed and hold it to your ear! What a genius idea!

Also the language. F-ing this and that. I've had to ask people politely to mind their language as I'm sitting on public transport with my young child and am called names or sworn at. No need to swear every other word when you're talking on the phone (loudly on speaker!) or to the person next to you.

Ugh, think I'll just give up and move to another planet. Anyone want to join me?!

letitlego · 06/04/2024 08:34

Agree

That's why I have ear pods. To drown out other people

Sidebeforeself · 06/04/2024 08:36

And they never bloody lose signal!

I disagree that it’s stupidity or lack of self awareness. These people just don’t care, think its their right, and in my experience just tell you to fuck off

theatremachine · 06/04/2024 08:36

I asked a 9 year old boy politely go wear headphones in the quiet carriage * and he told his grandma who was "supervising" from the other end of the not-at-all-busy carriage. She waited until the train was empty and came over and threatened to slap me because I'd made her grandson feel uncomfortable.

It's no wonder the kids are so entitled when the adults have their backs for shit behaviour.

Arrestedmanevolence · 06/04/2024 08:39

On my train a lot of people wear headphones but have them so loud that the entire carriage can hear the annoying music anyway. I should really put shares in hearing aid companies as that stock is going to fly in 20 years.

letitlego · 06/04/2024 08:39

I hate sitting next to old people on the train when they're texting and their phone makes a high pitched beep with every single tap

PotatoPudding · 06/04/2024 08:41

The 1% who voted YABU need go straight to the shops and get some earphones!
