to think the tip to tie a helium balloon to your babies cot is a bit ridiculous?

Yes that crossed my mind. They sink don't they...be a bit frightening (dangerous) for a baby to wake up with a deflated helium balloon hovering above his face.

I was a bit about it too, but assumed MNHQ must think it a good idea? (I mean they do veto the tips before they go on the front page don't they??)

I thought that too - when it deflates over night and sinks down...

And surely the cost of the helium balloons over time exceeds the cost of a mobile??

But then if they just did the tip to get a competition entry then they might have been struggling for ideas!

I just thyink it is easy to do things that are fine when a baby is tiny as they can't really move but then you can get balse and forget to move things and I think a helium balloon is potentially dangerous.

It is on my mind as I have just read about a young girl who has died after inhaling a balloon.

I agree.....ridiculous tip and actually very dangerous. You should never get into the habit of tieing things like this to a babies cot as they're a strangulation hazard.

Why do babies need a mobile anyway? They're mostly asleep for the first few months.

I hung the mobile for my dd in the window of her room instead of over her cot. I was toolazy worried that it might fall on her to hang it over the cot. Plus I had a nail in the right place .

It was sad about that little girl .

when my DD was born the hospital wouldn't let the balloons be tied to cots. They encouraged the Dads to take them home!

I buy my kids 2 helium balloons at each birthday but they stay downstairs and aren't allowed in their rooms. I have always felt I was a bit over worrying but now I don't.

Maybe not to the cot but a helium balloon was the best thing ever fro entertaining my babies. I would tie it to their arm or foot (staynig with them obv.)

I did not think the helium / metal sort were a choking hazard particularly - only the rubber sort which kind of 'cling' to things, eg a child's throat
