Do you ever think about this when you eat out? MUST READ

Years ago, I think it was a phone-in radio show show where they were talking about eating out. The caller said they put good-looking, smart people near windows and other prominent positions to entice new customers and I though, really, and started thinking where we were seated last time we ate out, lol

We rarely eat out other than a bite to eat at the local supermarkets unless on hols etc but when on hols, thankfully I have a really good-looking OH
😂and get a seat next to a window unless we don't want it.

I know for a fact that our daughter gets loads of attention from the waiters, male and female because she looks stunning, so it could be true?

Its their business, their choice, but not good practice IMO if it is still true in some places (For the record, I we do get put off if we see loud people and this that talk a lot with their hands and standing up, sitting down and big lol's)

NB: Do you own a restaurant/etc, do you practice stuff like this?

AIBU to think this kind of behaviour by some places that you go to eat to are doing this kind of thing are totally out of order as it should be the personality/behviour and not looks?

From a great newspaper in London - see below

Researchers on Channel 4 show Tricks of the Restaurant Trade discovered the best-looking diners were seated near windows to entice customers while less attractive customers were hidden away near the rear.

Top London restaurants 'sit ugly people at the back'

If you don’t get a window seat at a top London restaurant it could be because you’re too ugly and will put off other customers, a new documentary claims.

Apologies. 😂

Years ago we were abroad with the kids, and we stopped at a restaurant to eat. Apparently all the tables outside at the front were reserved, and they put us indoors. Gradually smart couples arrived and magically there were free tables out at the front for these couples.

Would have walked away if I'd realised from the start what they were doing.

@MNHQ Please delete this goady shite. And, while you're at it, please ban @DistinguishedSocialCommentator too. Thanks in advance.

Oh please don’t. This is really good fun. I say this as an insanely beautiful person who is also placed in window seats at McDonalds, Subway and Greggs have a full sized cardboard figure of me in their window to draw in more customers. I was flattered, as it’s obscuring the sausage rolls and steak bakes. But obviously they think I’m worth it.

I do think it is true in some European cities. One well known Paris brasserie has an upstairs known as Siberia where tourists who speak awful French are secreted. Rumour has it they also send up all the worst cuts of meat. But my genuine feeling in the UK is that preferential treatment involves asking you where you want to be seated. Personally I would NOT choose the window unless there was a great view and I COULDN’T be seen.

🤣When you’re sexier than a sausage roll you know you’re hot!

clickclackclue · 05/04/2024 20:57

Restaurant Manager here, 20 years experience in Various establishments.
This absolutely does not happen, no way whatsoever!
The only reasons you may be seated in the window are if the Staff wanted the Restaurant to appear busy to those walking past. OR they want to close the back of the Restaurant and go home early. Nothing to do with looks at all, ever Confused

As much as I am irritated with op, it's not a thread putting me off mn at all

Giving me a really decent chuckle 🤭 at the responses and humour in replies

Roastiesarethebestbit · 05/04/2024 21:02

I find that half of the time the window is the rubbish table, as it’s next to the door so you have a breeze blowing up your skirt every time another customer comes in. So I think they shove any old person in there.

I’m hotter than one of their sausage rolls straight out the oven. There’s steam literally pouring off me.

Window seat

supertatos · 05/04/2024 21:54

I don't think they care about attractiveness but yes if you're dressed nicely they'll put you in the window over someone in a tracksuit

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 05/04/2024 21:57

Nightblindness · 05/04/2024 18:16

Why care?

Personally, I dislike sitting in the window as I don't like being so visible to passers by, so thank god I really do look like a potato. I'm just happy to get a table, although I do object to one next to the toilets or too much in a gangway.

FWIW, I ate in a London restaurant at the weekend. The table in the window was occupied by a man eating on his own. And, without intending disrespect to the man, he was no Adonis.

Indeed, we prefer not to sit i a window if its next to a pavement but above ground floor or larger space around the place, we don't mind

Every time we go in and shown to seats its always in the back of my mind.
Thankfully, the majority of time we chose our own seats, ie in the supermarket cafe, lol

When I was a waitress we were told to always seat people in any window seats that were free - they want people to think they are busy.

FYI we were not at all picky about what they looked like 😅

Thank you as that indeed is good to know. As I said and its just me not my main family, ever since hearing the caller on the radio, the situation does play on my mind,

What you said makes more sense. I'm sure there are places like that but as I said in my OP, we rarely eat out unless on hols

I was wondering why when I phone up to book a table the person taking the booking always asked "How would you rate your family's attractiveness out of 10?"

LakeTiticaca · 05/04/2024 22:27

I couldn't care less as long as the food and the service is good and I'm not seated next to the bogs 🤣

If you aren't getting a window seat at Pizza Hut... Fucking hell, don't think for a minute that you can get the buffet.

Hi

I know you are saying that in jest. However, note what I posted in my OP, IE, I heard a caller say that many years ago re where to put certain people.

I guess its more true in expensive places which we don't do, thankfully.

There have been a few FM's on this thread that work as waiters and their places did not do seats just because someone looked good.

As some have said, the link I posted is just a story to fill papers

I've noted over the years that many topics often reappear years later and this may be one of them.

TBH, if there was a place I knew of where they gave you a seat because you looked good, I'd not go there

However, as I said in my OP re the radio show phone caller, it has stuck in my mind - possibly I'm a bit paranoid and I know I am.
