Does this warrant A&E or is it a GP appointment?

I know it’s best to speak to a doctor but I’m a bit worried tonight and not sure whether to wait until the morning or to go to A&E, so just looking for advice to see if anyone has experienced this/has any advice or reassurance.

The past few days I have not been feeling myself at all. I have been feeling overly run down and out of breath when walking even to the kitchen, and struggling to wake up. I have sleep apnea so there have been many times where I’ve overslept but what’s going on isn’t normal for me.

Basically yesterday I woke up at 7am, started work, fell asleep sat up at my computer until 11am when I woke up physically badly shaking. My partner tried to comfort me and woke me up and I sat up with him again for about 15 minutes before falling back asleep until 1pm, still shaking a little. I hadn’t had much sleep the night before yesterday, so just assumed it was this. I never suffer with sickness or nausea, but I’ve been gagging whenever I get a feeling of hunger, even when having eaten two hours prior. I’ve been needing to eat every hour, even something, otherwise I suddenly have to run to the toilet feeling like I’m going to throw up, but I haven’t actually thrown up.

Last night I went to sleep at about 10pm because I was still shattered, and today didn’t wake up until 3pm. My partner had tried to wake me multiple times but I was just stirring, unable to properly wake. I feel so lazy but I’m really not intending to be, I really cannot wake up and it’s making me nervous for tomorrow in case it happens again.

Again, all day the same thing with the nausea and gagging when hungry, and feeling really rundown, tired and breathless when walking.

About an hour ago a lower tummy ache has come
on, which doesn’t seem to be getting any better. I’ve got a huge feeling of anxiety despite having taken my anxiety medication, and I just want to cry.

I have PCOS and haven’t had a period in nearly 3 years, and I’ve taken pregnancy tests just in case and all negative. I don’t think I can get pregnant anymore but wanted to check.

The main pain is in the middle of the lower abdomen. I’ve already had my appendix out.

I’m not dying, but equally am worried that maybe I shouldn’t wait until tomorrow. But really don’t want to waste A&E time and be a hypochondriac either. :(

It could just be a virus. Obviously get checked out but don’t panic unnecessarily either.

BellaVita · 04/04/2024 22:46

I would phone 111

FUPAgirl · 04/04/2024 22:44

I think A&E, I would be concerned about ectopic pregnancy

The OP has had a negative pregnancy test. Less than 1% of ectopic pregnancies have a negative pregnancy test. It's unlikely.

idontlikealdi · 04/04/2024 22:51

I'd do something. Call 111. Sepsis because of the shaking and sleeping?

CormorantStrikesBack · 04/04/2024 23:05

I’d ring 111, very rare but could potentially be a leaking abdominal aortic aneurysm. Feeling of impending doom/anxiety can be associated with that. Obv it could just be anxiety but you have abdo pain and breathlessness as well.

Mmhmmn · 04/04/2024 23:08

Phone 111. Get the ball rolling.

Babyccino11 · 04/04/2024 23:09

Hi OP, GP here, I think you need to be assessed tonight with those symptoms to rule out pulmonary embolus or sepsis amongst other things. Please go to a&e

Caerulea · 04/04/2024 23:10

Deleting my prev 111 suggestion as an actual GP replied at the same time.

A&E it is!

Besideourselves · 04/04/2024 23:12

Covid? Or another virus?

Mayflower282 · 04/04/2024 23:14

I would do online video GP appointment, they are about £45. Gogodoc.com have been good, I got an appt within 30 mins.

AgileMentor · 04/04/2024 23:18

I’d call 111.

TheShellBeach · 04/04/2024 23:23

I think A and E with those symptoms.

Whatthespotarethese · 04/04/2024 23:23

Has type 1 diabetes crossed your mind? I’d be worried about the tiredness in that respect if you have any of the other symptoms.

lunar1 · 04/04/2024 23:28

I had sepsis with your symptoms, luckily for me our A&E have an incredible pathway. 111 asked me to go to the hospital, I gave my symptoms in a hazy fashion to the receptionist and had bloods taken, IV antibiotics and a bed in under 10 minutes.

I’m glad you’ve said this.

StormySpanielz · 04/04/2024 23:36

I think the moral of this story is to stop asking randoms in the internet and use the services that are available whose professional role is to answer your question! Call 111 who little doubt will advise you go to to A&E.

everythingthelighttouches · 04/04/2024 23:38

You mentioned sleep apnea. Do you have treatment for it?

Feverblack · 04/04/2024 23:42

Really hope you’ve sought advice OP. Wishing you well

Wonkywinky · 04/04/2024 23:42

This sounds like the virus we've had on our family recently .
Some of us vomited. Other didn't .

Itsmychristmasdress · 04/04/2024 23:45

I would be concerned for your heart. I think you should go to a and e. I'd rather be wrong and in the right place.

Wow that's amazing! And so worth doing if you're having a meltdown trying to decide what to do for the best

someoneanyoneeveryone · 04/04/2024 23:59

To summarise:

main symptoms:
lethargy/ breathless with minimal exertion
lower abdominal pain
nausea/gagging and increased appetite
shaking when waking from sleep
worsening anxiety despite taking normal meds
pregnancy test negative

background:
sleep apnoea
pcos
appendicectomy
anxiety

difficult to assess without knowing things like your age and other negatives (eg you haven’t mentioned but can I assume you don’t have a fever/ chest pain/ cough/ urinary symptoms?). whether anything had happened to trigger these symptoms or if you have experienced similar symptoms in the past.

realistically, I think this needs urgent bloods to rule out causes like infection or anaemia/ abnormal thyroid function etc and your GP should be able to arrange these.

Take some pain killers and see if the pain or other symptoms get worse. If you are sleeping and symptoms are stable like last few days; call and speak to your GP tomorrow.

hope you get some answers soon

Jacopo · 05/04/2024 00:56

Have you been passing urine normally? It
could be sepsis. You need to go to A &E.

IncognitoMam · 05/04/2024 01:01

I hope you're getting seen? And that it isn't anything serious.

DreamingOfaLife · 05/04/2024 01:06

Hello op, I experienced the same symptoms as you and was found to have a pulmonary embolism. Of course it could be one of many things but you should definitely at the very least call 111 and seek professional advice.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.
